The inheritance of resistance in red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) to yellow rust (Phragmidium rubi-idaei) was studied in a diallel cross among the cultivars Boyne, Meeker, Mailing Jewel, Glen Prosen and Glen Clova. The progenies and clonally propagated parents were exposed initially in a rust-infected plantation where the incidence and severity of infection was assessed at the telial stage. The following spring leaves on new canes of the same plants were inoculated with urediniospores in a glasshouse at 18 ± 2 °C. The latent period and number of uredinia per cm2 of abaxial leaf surface were determined 13 and 18 days after inoculation. Cv. Boyne developed only chlorotic flecking on inoculated leaves in the glasshouse and no sporulation was observed. It is postulated that this reaction was determined by a major gene which is designated Yr. Some of the other parents showed incomplete resistance of the slow rusting type, and segregants of Boyne selfed that were susceptible also showed low levels of rust, which suggests that Boyne carries both major- and minor-gene resistance. Diallel analyses of both the field and glasshouse data from the susceptible segregates indicated that the degree of incomplete resistance present was determined predominantly by additive gene action, though small but significant non-additive effects also occurred: cv. Meeker was the most resistant parent and contributed the most resistance to the progenies. The Meeker progenies also segregated for gene H, which determines cane hairiness and is known to be associated with resistance to other diseases. Abstract. Two strains of Dunaliella , both grown at 25°C were analysed for their α-amino acid and neutral soluble carbohydrate content. Glycerol was found as a major cell constituent in both varieties; the amount was roughly proportional to the outside NaCI concentration between 0.5 and 3 kmol m−3 , and varied from 3.4% to 45% of the total dry weight of packed cells. Black raspberry necrosis virus (BRNV) induces a severe apical necrosis in black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) but fails to induce diagnostic symptoms in red raspberry. However, BRNV infection of F1, F2 and F3 hybrids from the cross black raspberry × red raspberry induced mosaic symptoms of varying intensity but no typical apical necrosis. In a survey of 28 red raspberry cultivars, a few developed severe angular chlorotic leaf spots when infected with raspberry leaf mottle virus and a few others did so when infected with raspberry leaf spot virus. These reactions were determined by single dominant genes designated Lm and Ls respectively. Further studies on resistance to Leptosphaeria coniothyrium in the red raspberry and related species
Rubus pileatus and its F1 hybrids with raspberry (R. idaeus) were resistant to cane blight (Leptosphaeriu conioth-yriurn), but little resistance was obtained in subsequent backcross generations apart from a hybrid identified in the second backcross. Two hybrids from backcrossing R. coreanus to raspberry also showed resistance. R. pileatus and its F, hybrids produced hard growth, unlike that of raspberries, which may have been associated with a form of resistance that could not easily be transferred to commercial raspberry cultivars. Some of the genotypes used as parents showed intermediate levels of resistance and it is possible that the highly resistant genotype identified in the second backcross arose from a recombination of genes for resistance. Plants with pubescent canes (gene H) were up to 20% more resistant to mycelial inoculation than those with non-pubescent canes (gene h), and the percentage of machine-harvester inflicted wounds with disease symptoms that resulted from natural infection was also less in genotypes with pubescent canes. Many genotypes with intermediate levels of resistance suffered only limited damage from mycelial inoculation and so there are good prospects for breeding cultivars with an effective resistance, despite the limited value of R. pileatus as a donor species. 相似文献

1. European hares Lepus europaeus have declined throughout Europe since the 1960s. Possible reasons for this include agricultural intensification and changes in climate and predator numbers, but no clear consensus has been reached as to the relative importance of each of these. We aimed to identify factors associated with high and low hare numbers throughout Europe, to determine which could have caused population declines. 2. Results of 77 research papers from 12 European countries were summarized. Relationships between hare density and demographics and habitat, climate, hunting and predator variables were examined and quantified where possible. Temporal changes in factors identified as being associated with high or low numbers of hares were then examined to see if they could explain population declines. 3. Data from pastural habitats were limited, but densities of hares were low. Arable habitats had higher densities than mixed areas in spring, unless farming was intensive in which case densities were similar. In autumn the two habitats had similar densities. Field size, temperature, precipitation and hunting had no effect on density throughout Europe. Fecundity was affected by climate. 4. Arable land, various crops, fallow habitat and temperature were positively associated, and monoculture, precipitation and predators negatively associated with hare abundance. The relationship of field size, pasture and woodland with abundance depended on spatial scale. 5. Habitat changes caused by agricultural intensification are the ultimate cause of hare population declines. Effects of changes in climate or predator numbers are magnified by the loss of high-quality year-round forage and cover. Further research is required on how habitat changes affect fecundity and survival, and to identify which parameters have the greatest impact on population numbers. Farmland management policies that target the re-establishment of some of the habitat diversity lost within fields, farms and landscapes will help to reverse the decline of the European hare. 相似文献

Background
Macrolides reduce exacerbations in patients with COPD. Their effects on health status has not been assessed as primary outcome and is less clear. This study assessed the effects of prophylactic azithromycin on cough-specific health status in COPD-patients with chronic productive cough.Methods
In this randomised controlled trial 84 patients met the eligibility criteria: age of ≥40 years, COPD GOLD stage ≥2 and chronic productive cough. The intervention-group (n = 42) received azithromycin 250 mg 3 times a week and the control-group (n = 42) received a placebo. Primary outcome was cough-specific health status at 12 weeks, measured with the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ). Secondary outcomes included generic and COPD-specific health status and exacerbations. Changes in adverse events and microbiology were monitored.Results
Mean age of participants was 68 ± 10 years and mean FEV1 was 1.36 ± 0.47 L. The improvement in LCQ total score at 12 weeks was significantly greater with azithromycin (difference 1.3 ± 0.5, 95% CI 0.3;2.3, p = 0.01) and met the minimal clinically important difference. Similar results were found for the domain scores, and COPD-specific and generic health status questionnaires. Other secondary endpoints were non-significant. No imbalances in adverse events were found.Conclusions
Prophylactic azithromycin improved cough-specific health status in COPD-patients with chronic productive cough to a clinically relevant degree.Trial registration

Prostate cancer cells release atypically large extracellular vesicles (EVs), termed large oncosomes, which may play a role in the tumor microenvironment by transporting bioactive molecules across tissue spaces and through the blood stream. In this study, we applied a novel method for selective isolation of large oncosomes applicable to human platelet-poor plasma, where the presence of caveolin-1-positive large oncosomes identified patients with metastatic disease. This procedure was also used to validate results of a miRNA array performed on heterogeneous populations of EVs isolated from tumorigenic RWPE-2 prostate cells and from isogenic non-tumorigenic RWPE-1 cells. The results showed that distinct classes of miRNAs are expressed at higher levels in EVs derived from the tumorigenic cells in comparison to their non-tumorigenic counterpart. Large oncosomes enhanced migration of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), an effect that was increased by miR-1227, a miRNA abundant in large oncosomes produced by RWPE-2 cells. Our findings suggest that large oncosomes in the circulation report metastatic disease in patients with prostate cancer, and that this class of EV harbors functional molecules that may play a role in conditioning the tumor microenvironment. 相似文献
