Ground and aerial surveys of breeding Sooty Falcons Falco concolor were conducted along the western coast of Saudi Arabia and its offshore islands from August to October 1991 and 1992. An estimated population of 260–381 pairs was found. The known world breeding population is still below 1000 pairs. Most rocky islands were occupied except the largest islands of the Farasan archipelago. Among the many low islets surrounded with mangrove, only one small group near Al Lith harboured breeding Sooty Falcons. The distribution pattern, density and breeding success of the falcons seemed to be strongly influenced by food availability (autumn migration of small and medium-size birds) and the deterring presence of terrestrial predators. Human disturbance and trapping are still of local importance.  相似文献

The comparative distribution and abundance of the two congeneric goshawks of New Caledonia, the White-bellied Goshawk Accipiter haplochrous and the Brown Goshawk A. fasciatus vigilax , were studied on 100 1-km2 sample quadrats spread randomly over the island. The White-bellied Goshawk is a well-differentiated endemic forest-dwelling species, presumably of older origin than the morphologically little-differentiated island subspecies of the Brown Goshawk, which is restricted to open habitats. The two species exhibit ecological characteristics attributed to the so-called insular syndrome; these characteristics were more pronounced in the White-bellied than in the Brown Goshawk. The densities of both species were much higher than any density of the same or similar species ever recorded on a continent. Their habitat and foraging niches were broad. The two species were clearly segregated by habitat, their distribution overlapping only in semi-forested lowland areas where the White-bellied tended to encroach more on the habitat of the Brown Goshawk than the reverse. Possible determinants of their abundance, niche breadth and interspecific segregation are discussed, as well as the consequences for their conservation. The occurrence in New Caledonia of two additional congeneric species recently extinct and the existence of three other pairs of congeneric bird species with similar relationships are also emphasized.  相似文献

The lack of information on the ways seasonal drought modifies the CO2 exchange between Neotropical rainforest ecosystems and the atmosphere and the resulting carbon balance hinders our ability to precisely predict how these ecosystems will respond as global environmental changes force them to face increasingly contrasting conditions in the future. To address this issue, seasonal variations in daily net ecosystem productivity (NEPd) and two main components of this productivity, daily total ecosystem respiration (REd) and daily gross ecosystem productivity (GEPd), were estimated over 2 years at a flux tower site in French Guiana, South America (5 °16′54″N, 52 °54′44″W). We compared seasonal variations between wet and dry periods and between dry periods of contrasting levels of intensity (i.e. mild vs. severe) during equivalent 93‐day periods. During the wet periods, the ecosystem was almost in balance with the atmosphere (storage of 9.0 g C m?2). Seasonal dry periods, regardless of their severity, are associated with higher incident radiation and lower REd combined with reduced soil respiration associated with low soil water availability. During the mild dry period, as is normally the case in this region, the amount of carbon stored in the ecosystem was 32.7 g C m?2. Severe drought conditions resulted in even lower REd, whereas the photosynthetic activity was only moderately reduced and no change in canopy structure was observed. Thus, the severe dry period was characterized by greater carbon storage (64.6 g C m?2), emphasizing that environmental conditions, such as during a severe drought, modify the CO2 exchange between Neotropical rainforest ecosystems and the atmosphere and potentially the resulting carbon balance.  相似文献

1. Freshwater communities are subject to various abrupt environmental disturbances and increasing pollution levels in their habitat. According to the nature and the periodicity of disturbances (i.e. punctuated, recurrent or continuous), one may expect different kinds of response of the target gastropod communities. 2. The gastropod community of a French lake has been investigated for 10 years to study its responses to three main environmental disturbances: supra‐seasonal droughts, recurrent proliferations of cyanobacteria and parasitism by trematodes. The relationship between this latter factor, considered as a continuous stressor, and the gastropod community was a particular focus. 3. A total of 13 280 gastropods belonging to 17 species (mostly Pulmonata with Planorbidae as the dominant family) have been sampled in the lake over the 10‐year time series. Species composition of the gastropod community varied strongly during the study period as did species richness (0–14, mean of 6.5 ± 0.4 species) and abundance of gastropods (0–4456, mean of 192 ± 72 individuals). Trematode larvae belonging to 11 morphotypes of cercariae were detected in 15 of the 17 species of gastropods and had a total prevalence of 2.9%. 4. Droughts (punctuated stressor) were responsible for the disappearance of nearly all gastropod species, and thus represent a severe environmental stressor for them. Nevertheless, the extent of this stressor was limited since the gastropod community was highly resilient. 5. Recurrent proliferations of toxic cyanobacteria (recurrent stressor) coincided with the large decline of the gastropod community, corresponding to a strong decrease in abundance and species richness. Intoxication of gastropods by toxic cyanobacteria was demonstrated by the bioaccumulation of microcystins in all gastropod tissues. 6. Trematode parasitism (continuous stressor) did not affect the gastropod community despite the possibly strong impact of parasites on some host species (those with monthly prevalence as high as 100% at some times). Indeed, abundance and species richness of gastropods were scarcely influenced by trematode prevalence or species richness.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We found a new acoustic signal in Drosophila simulans (si) and D. melanogaster (me). It is a ‘rejection signal’ (RS) produced by adult males and young males and females in response to the courting behaviour of mature males who emit ‘pulse songs’ (i.e. love song: LS). It occurs most frequently in si, less in adults me except if the interacting males belong to different chemical morphs (i.e. temperate or equatorial population). There are no differences in the LS characteristics directed to various sexes and ages. The RSs produced by adult males or by young animals do not differ significantly either. They are emitted by neither virgin nor fecundated adult me females but a few times by virgin adult si females. The RS (like the LS) is a multipulse signal but intervals between pulses are about twice those of LS, around 90 ms for si and 80 ms for me. They are very irregular, as is the distribution of energy along the bandwidth mainly between 300 and 800 Hz for si and 200 and 600 Hz for me. The sound level of the RS is from 10 to 20 dB less than the LS. The RS seems to be linked to the ‘flicking’ behaviour produced by both wings, while the LS always corresponds to the so-called ‘wing vibration’.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The cave collembolan Gulgastrura reticulosa was re-examined from a systematic point of view, using data obtained from scanning electron microscopy and investigation of temperature tolerances and moulting cycles. Absences of the third antennal organ, postantennal organ, pseudocellus, eyes and furca were confirmed, along with the prominent development, by contrast, of an "apical organ" at the apex of the antenna. The intermoulting period was shown to be 110 days on average at 9.5°C which is almost twice as long as the longest known intermoulting period for a collembolan. These exceptional characteristics are suggestive of drastic divergence from existing family groups of Collembola. It is suggested that the erection of a new family, separate from the Hypogastruridae to which Gulgastrura was assigned by the original author, may become appropriate some time in the future when evidence other than of morphology becomes available supporting this divergence. Gulgastrura is apparently limited to cave entrances, rendering the animal enigmatic in view of the usual occurrence of troglobites deep in caves.  相似文献

Abstract The relationship between the distribution of predators (fish, odonates and water beetles) and prey assemblages (amphibian larvae) was investigated in the tropical rainforest of central Amazonas, Brasil. The anuran community uses a variety of waterbodies for reproduction, ranging from streams and streamside ponds to isolated forest ponds. Predators in this system include fish in streams and streamside ponds, and invertebrates (primarily odonate naiads and beetles) in forest ponds. Tadpole species richness and assemblage structure were related to fish density and species richness. No relationships between tadpole assemblages and abiotic pond characteristics were detected. The presence offish explained much of the variation in both species composition and species richness within and among ponds. Some species of tadpole were consistently found to coexist with high densities of fish. Path analyses suggest that while fish have a strong direct effect on tadpole associations and species richness, they also have an indirect effect through invertebrate predators (odonate larvae and coleopteran beetles). Prey survival-strategies such as palatability and behaviour may explain how tadpole species composition is affected by predators at the community level. These findings suggest that the observed patterns of habitat use by larval anurans may be structured in response to the distribution of key predators (fish) in this system.  相似文献

The plague has been present for a century in Madagascar; the only known reservoir is the black rat, which is also the main victim of this disease. Whereas the two plague foci are restricted to an altitude above 800 m, the black rat is distributed over the whole island, the only morphological variation being a within-site variability in belly colour. To resolve these apparent contradictions, an analysis of the different belly colour morphs and of populations living in different habitats and altitudes was undertaken. An allozymic study demonstrated that sympatric white- and grey-bellied rats ( N  = 26) living within the plague foci, all belonged to the same species: Rattus rattus . This specific assignment was confirmed by a chromosomal analysis which showed that all 90 individuals studied presented the same diploid number, 2 n  = 38, whatever the habitat and altitude. This study indicates that all specimens investigated in Madagascar could be referred to the same black rat species. Survival of rat populations, despite a century of coexistence with the plague, is most likely related to their high reproductive and recolonization potential, as well as selection of plague resistant genotypes. As the altitudinal limit of the plague foci does not seem to be related to characteristics of the rodent reservoir, investigations concerning the vectors are now essential.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78 , 335–341.  相似文献
