According to the energy maximization premise an animal shouldchoose its diet to maximize its net energy gain per unit handlingtime (E/Tb). Previous studies on adult marine gastropods haveshown this index of profitability to be a monotonicaUy increasingfunction of prey size, yet they select smaller, apparently sub-optimalprey. Laboratory experiments were used to investigate the profitabilityof different sized mussels, as prey, to juvenile Nucella lapillususing two separate criteria. First the ability to promote growthand second the more usual energy gain per unit handling time. The major difference between the two measures of prey valuewas that E/Th predicted an optimum prey size larger than thegrowth rate model. Selection experiments were used to comparepreferences exhibited by developing Nucella with the spectraof profitability defined from the two models. In general thewhelks' choice of prey size was best predicted by the growthrate model of prey value. Field studies illustrated a functionalrelationship between size of mussel eaten and size of whelk,the mean size of mussel eaten again conformed more closely tomaximization of growth rate. The energetic return in the E/Th model is generally taken asthe amount of food ingested, however gross growth efficiencywas found to be a decreasing function of ingestion rate. Sinceingestion rate was an increasing function of prey size, theE/Th model overestimated the value of large prey by ignoringthe efficiency with which food is used by the predator.  相似文献

Direct estimation of dispersal rates at large geographic scales can be technically and logistically challenging, especially in small animals of low vagility like amphibians. The use of molecular markers to reveal patterns of genetic structure provides an indirect way to infer dispersal rates and patterns of recent and historical gene flow among populations. Here, we use mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data and genome-wide amplified fragment length polymorphism markers to examine population structure in the Pyrenean brook newt ( Calotriton asper ) across four main drainages in the French Pyrenees. mtDNA sequence data (2040 bp) revealed three phylogroups shallowly differentiated and with low genetic diversity. In sharp contrast, variation in 382 amplified fragment length polymorphism loci was high and revealed a clear pattern of isolation by distance consistent with long-term restriction of gene flow at three spatial scales: (i) among all four main drainages, (ii) between sites within drainages, and (iii) even between adjacent populations separated by less than 4 km. The high pairwise F ST values between localities across numerous loci, together with the high frequency of fixed alleles in several populations, suggests a combination of marked geographic isolation, small population sizes and very limited dispersal in C. asper . The contrasting lack of variation detected in mtDNA sequence data is intriguing and underscores the importance of multilocus approaches to detect true patterns of gene flow in natural populations of amphibians.  相似文献

In spinal deformation studies, three-dimensional reconstruction of the spine is frequently represented as a curve in space fitted to the vertebral centroids. Conventional interpolation techniques such as splines. Bezier and the least squares method are limited since they cannot describe precisely the great variety of spinal morphologies. This article presents a more general technique called dual kriging, which includes two mathematical constituents (drift and covariance) to adjust the interpolated functions to spinal deformity better. The cross-validation technique was used to compare the parametric representations of spinal curves with different combinations of drift and covariance functions. Model validation was performed from a series of analytic curves reflecting typical scoliotic spines. Calculation of geometric torsion, a sensitive parameter, was done to evaluate the accuracy of the kriging models. The best model showed an absolute mean difference of 1.2 x 10~5 (±7·1 × l()~ 5) mm?1 between the analytical and estimated geometric torsions compared to 5·25 × 10~ (±3.7 × 310~2) mm* 1 for the commonly used least-squares Fourier series method, a significant improvement in spinal torsion evaluation.  相似文献

Measurement of carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity in homogenatesof accessory boring organs of the muricid gastropod,Purpuralapillus, by Meldrum and Roughton's manometric method showedthat CA is always present in boring as well as in inactive ABOs,but in variable amounts. Tests by the same method on whole ABOsin an isotonic solution were negative, proving that CA remainsintracellularly. Experiments in vivo on inhibition and activation demonstratedclearly that CA is responsible for demineralization of the valvesof lamellibranchs by Purpura:(a) at low concentrations of Diamox,partial inhibition of the enzymeoccurred, that is, the numberof complete holes decreased or disappeared and etchings increased;and at higher concentrations full inhibition took place. Inhibitionis reversed when snails are replaced in normal sea water; (b)action of pure CO2 or mixtures of CO2 and O2 accelerated boring:in the optimal mixture, three times more boreholes were producedby snails than in the controls, and in about half the time.Under these conditions the reaction catalyzed by CA goes tothe right with hydration of CO2 and is accompanied by releaseof H+ ions; in the presence of an increased concentration ofCO2, the reaction is intensified and results in an additionalrelease of H+ ions. Consequently, destruction of CaCO3 by theABO of Purpura in sea water enriched with CO2 is accelerated. To identify the nature of the exchanged ion, we tested the effectof NaCl and KC1 on the boring mechanism in vivo by increasingthe amount of these salts in the seawater of snails with prey.In this case augmentation of the boring activity was noticed.These results suggest that the boring activity is accompaniedby complex ionic exchanges.  相似文献

The results of a survey of the bacterial flora in many sites in 21 homes are discussed. In all areas both wet and dry, coagulase negative, Gram positive cocci and Bacillus spp. were found. Wet areas such as kitchen sinks and drains contained large numbers of Escherichia coli and sometimes Klebsiella pneumoniae , Citrobacter and Enterobacter spp. In toilet areas, little evidence was found of contamination with organisms of faecal origin. Of 47 samples taken from teacloths and towels 22 were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus although the actual numbers of this organism were low. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from several sites in one home only.  相似文献

Although vast areas in tropical regions have weathered soils with low potassium (K) levels, little is known about the effects of K supply on the photosynthetic physiology of trees. This study assessed the effects of K and sodium (Na) supply on the diffusional and biochemical limitations to photosynthesis in Eucalyptus grandis leaves. A field experiment comparing treatments receiving K (+K) or Na (+Na) with a control treatment (C) was set up in a K‐deficient soil. The net CO2 assimilation rates were twice as high in +K and 1.6 times higher in +Na than in the C as a result of lower stomatal and mesophyll resistance to CO2 diffusion and higher photosynthetic capacity. The starch content was higher and soluble sugar was lower in +K than in C and +Na, suggesting that K starvation disturbed carbon storage and transport. The specific leaf area, leaf thickness, parenchyma thickness, stomatal size and intercellular air spaces increased in +K and +Na compared to C. Nitrogen and chlorophyll concentrations were also higher in +K and +Na than in C. These results suggest a strong relationship between the K and Na supply to E. grandis trees and the functional and structural limitations to CO2 assimilation rates.  相似文献
