Tsetse flies Glossina spp. (Diptera; Glossinidae) are blood‐feeding vectors of disease that are attracted to vertebrate hosts by odours and visual cues. Studies on how tsetse flies approach visual devices are of fundamental interest because they can help in the development of more efficient control tools. The responses of a forest tsetse fly species Glossina brevipalpis (Newstead) to human breath are tested in a wind tunnel in the presence or absence of a blue sphere as a visual target. The flight responses are video recorded with two motion‐sensitive cameras and characterized in three dimensions. Although flies make meandering upwind flights predominantly in the horizontal plane in the plume of breath alone, upwind flights are highly directed at the visual target presented in the plume of breath. Flies responding to the visual target fly from take‐off within stricter flight limits at lower ground speeds and with a significantly lower variance in flight trajectories in the horizontal plane. Once at the target, flies fly in loops principally in the horizontal plane within 40 cm of the blue sphere before descending in spirals beneath it. Successful field traps designed for G. brevipalpis take into account the strong horizontal component in local search behaviour by this species at objects. The results suggest that trapping devices should also take into account the propensity of G. brevipalpis to descend to the lower parts of visual targets.  相似文献

It is shown that gangrene is a soil- and haulm-borne disease and that infection of the tubers can take place through cuts, bruises, 'eyes' and lenticels. Low temperature and dry, dark storage were found to be most favourable to development of the disease, but rotting was more severe if the tubers had been kept at a higher temperature before infection took place. Storage at 21° C. for 10 days was sufficient to arrest rotting. Gangrene developed on all the potato varieties tested, but different varieties showed differences in susceptibility to the disease. No difference was observed in the susceptibility of early and late varieties but susceptibility increased with advancing maturity of the tubers.  相似文献

C palmstruchii Lindman does not justify specific or subspecific rank, as it cannot be recognised by an association of distinct characters. 1. A litter‐bag experiment was undertaken in a pond on the margins of a large temperate floodplain in south‐western France to assess the potential influence of the replacement of native by exotic riparian species on organic matter degradation. We determined initial litter chemical composition, breakdown rates and the invertebrate assemblages associated with the litter for five pairs of native dominant and exotic invasive species co‐occurring at different stages along a successional gradient. 2. Litter chemical composition, breakdown rates and abundance and diversity of detritivorous invertebrates were similar for the exotic and native species overall. No overall changes in organic matter degradation can thus be predicted from the replacement of dominant natives by exotic invasives. Breakdown rates were primarily driven by the C/N ratio. 3. One invasive species (Buddleja davidii) showed significantly higher breakdown rates than its native counterpart (Populus nigra), resulting in the disappearance of leaf litter 6 months prior to the next litterfall. In some cases, therefore, invasion by exotic species may result in discontinuity of resource supply for decomposers.  相似文献

The extensibility of cell walls in segments of living Avenacoleoptiles has been determined after treatment with IAA bythe use of a microextensometer. It has been demonstrated thatIAA has an effect both on the plastic and elastic extensibility,which is more marked if the segments are allowed to grow, exceptat temperatures nearing 0° C. The auxin-induced increasein extensibility is therefore not a direct effect on the walland metabolic factors must be involved. The results are interpreted,along cunent lines of thought, as indicating effects on thelinkage between protopectin or hemicellulose chains themselvesand between these and the microfibrillar network of cellulose.The bearing of these interpretations on the normal growth processin cell walls is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Clinical blood biochemistry and hematology are valuable tools to evaluate health and welfare in many animal species. In order to document the general biology of one of the most poorly known nonhuman primate species, and contribute to its conservation, the clinical blood biochemistry and hematology of the sun‐tailed monkey (Cercopithecus solatus Harrisson) was investigated in its range of endemicity in Gabon. Data derived from 26 years of clinical monitoring of the only semicaptive colony of this species in the world, housed at CIRMF (Franceville, Gabon), were analyzed in order to establish reference values of age–sex classes. Consistent with previous reports in other primate species, age and sex significantly affected a number of biochemical and hematological parameters in C. solatus. Hematological analyses demonstrated significant differences in red blood cells, hemoglobin (HB), and hematocrit (HT), with males showing significantly greater values than females. In contrast, neutrophil counts were greater in females. An ontogenetic effect was detected for HB, HT, eosinophil, and monocyte counts, while lymphocytes significantly decreased with age. Biochemical analyses also showed significant differences, with females displaying greater cholesterol and alanine aminotransferase levels. Increase in levels of blood urea and aspartate aminotransferase coupled with decrease in albumin in old individuals suggested declining kidney, liver, and muscle functions with age. Interspecific comparisons were conducted and the effects of the unique semifree‐ranging setting on the validity and value of the results presented are discussed. The reference values established will be useful in further ecological, parasitological, and virological studies of the sun‐tailed monkey.  相似文献

Damage to potatoes during harvesting and grading increases the incidence of gangrene. Among the factors involved, the condition of the soil and the type of damage caused by the implements may be of importance. Gangrene is most evident in tubers which have been stored cold or moved when cold; warmer storage at some stage usually reduces its incidence and severity. Seasonal incidence is not directly related to rainfall but is determined by factors affecting ripening and destruction of haulm, moisture status of soils at harvest, susceptibility to damage, and exposure during storage and in transit.  相似文献
