In bay snook (Petenia splendida) larvae the histological development of the digestive system and swim bladder, and their relative timing of differentiation were studied from hatching to 45 days post‐hatch (dph) at 29°C. Newly hatched larvae showed a simple digestive tract, which appeared as a straight undifferentiated tube lined by a single layer of columnar epithelial cells (future enterocytes). The anatomical and histological differentiation of the digestive tract and accessory glands was a very intense, asynchronous process, proceeding from the distal to the anterior part. The intestine was the first region to differentiate (9 days post‐hatch – dph, 6.5 mm SL), and the oesophagus the last (21 dph, 8.4 mm SL). At the onset of feeding, the digestive system was organized into different functional and histologically differentiated sections, such as the buccopharynx, oesophagus, glandular stomach, and anterior and posterior intestine. This organization resembled that of the juveniles, with the exception of pharyngeal teeth and buccopharyngeal as well as oesophageal goblet cells, which proliferated later during the mixed feeding period. Histological observations revealed that bay snook larvae retained endogenous yolk reserves until 24 dph (8.9 ± 0.4 mm SL), which might be helpful for weaning this species onto a compound diet. The important lipidic accumulation observed in the intestinal mucosa, liver, and pancreas in fish fed a compound trout diet indicated that although fish were able to digest and absorb lipids, the diet formulation did not fit the nutritional requirements of early juveniles of this species. The ontogeny of the digestive system followed the same general pattern as in most cichlid species described to date. However, we detected species‐specific differences in the timing of differentiation that were related to their reproductive guild. According to the histological results, some recommendations regarding the intensive culture of this species are also provided.  相似文献

Background

Theoretical studies suggest that direct and indirect selection have the potential to cause substantial evolutionary change in female mate choice. Similarly, sexual selection is considered a strong force in the evolution of male attractiveness and the exaggeration of secondary sexual traits. Few studies have, however, directly tested how female mate choice and male attractiveness respond to selection. Here we report the results of a selection experiment in which we selected directly on female mating preference for attractive males and, independently, on male attractiveness in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. We measured the direct and correlated responses of female mate choice and male attractiveness to selection and the correlated responses of male ornamental traits, female fecundity and adult male and female survival.

Results

Surprisingly, neither female mate choice nor male attractiveness responded significantly to direct or to indirect selection. Fecundity did differ significantly among lines in a way that suggests a possible sexually-antagonistic cost to male attractiveness.

Conclusions

The opportunity for evolutionary change in female mate choice and male attractiveness may be much smaller than predicted by current theory, and may thus have important consequences for how we understand the evolution of female mate choice and male attractiveness. We discuss a number of factors that may have constrained the response of female choice and male attractiveness to selection, including low heritabilities, low levels of genetic (co)variation in the multivariate direction of selection, sexually-antagonistic constraint on sexual selection and the "environmental covariance hypothesis".

RNA virus behavior can be influenced by interactions among viral genomes and their expression products within the mutant spectra of replicating viral quasispecies. Here, we report the extent of interference of specific capsid and polymerase mutants of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) on replication of wild-type (wt) RNA. The capsid and polymerase mutants chosen for this analysis had been characterized biochemically and structurally. Upon co-electroporation of BHK-21 cells with wt RNA and a tenfold excess of mutant RNA, some mutants displayed strong interference (<10% of progeny production by wt RNA alone), while other mutants did not show detectable interference. The capacity to interfere required an excess of mutant RNA and was associated with intracellular replication, irrespective of the formation of infectious particles by the mutant virus. The extent of interference did not correlate with the known types and number of interactions involving the amino acid residue affected in each mutant. Synergistic interference was observed upon co-electroporation of wt RNA and mixtures of capsid and polymerase mutants. Interference was specific, in that the mutants did not affect expression of encephalomyocarditis virus RNA, and that a two nucleotide insertion mutant of FMDV expressing a truncated polymerase did not exert any detectable interference. The results support the lethal defection model for viral extinction by enhanced mutagenesis, and provide further evidence that the population behavior of highly variable viruses can be influenced strongly by the composition of the quasispecies mutant spectrum as a whole.  相似文献

Excessive training (i.e. overtraining, OT) may result in underperformance, which can be characterized by the time needed to re-establish performance (i.e. functional overreaching (FOR), nonfunctional overreaching, OT syndrome). The present study is an initial screening for proteins presenting altered abundance in the red (RG) and white (WG) portions of the gastrocnemius muscle from rats submitted to an OT protocol that induced FOR. In the RG, compared to the nontrained control, FOR demonstrated an increased abundance of proteins normally related to adaptation to endurance training (e.g. proteins of oxidative phosphorylation complexes, proteins related to lipid metabolism, antioxidants, and chaperones). In the WG, spots identified as mitochondrial aconitase and a component of the succinate dehydrogenase complex were downregulated in FOR, as were proteins related to myofibril stabilization; these latter were upregulated in the RG. This initial study shows that skeletal muscles with different fiber-type compositions respond differently to an OT period. Also, it is likely that actin-interacting proteins have an important role in muscle adaptation to endurance exercise.  相似文献

The search engine processor (SEPro) is a tool for filtering, organizing, sharing, and displaying peptide spectrum matches. It employs a novel three-tier Bayesian approach that uses layers of spectrum, peptide, and protein logic to lead the data to converge to a single list of reliable protein identifications. SEPro is integrated into the PatternLab for proteomics environment, where an arsenal of tools for analyzing shotgun proteomic data is provided. By using the semi-labeled decoy approach for benchmarking, we show that SEPro significantly outperforms a commercially available competitor.  相似文献

Two new triterpenes, 3-oxo-20-hydroxy-lupan-28-oic and 3β,6β-dihydroxy-olean-18-en-28-oic acids, along with oleanonic, morolic and sumaresinolic acids have been isolated from Orthopterygium huancuy. The structure of the first new terpene was determined by single crystal X-ray analysis.  相似文献
