The release of any species into a novel environment can evoke transmission of parasites that do not normally parasitize the host as well as potentially introducing new parasites into the environment. Species introductions potentially incur such risks, yet little is currently known about the parasite fauna of introduced primate species over the long term. We describe the results of long‐term monitoring of the intestinal parasite fauna of an unprovisioned, reproducing population of chimpanzees introduced 40 years earlier (1966–1969) onto Rubondo Island in Lake Victoria, Tanzania, a non‐native habitat for chimpanzees. Two parasitological surveys (March 1997–October 1998 and October 2002–December 2005) identified Entamoeba spp. including E. coli, Iodamoeba buetschlii, Troglodytella abrassarti, Chilomastix mesnili, Trichuris sp., Anatrichosoma sp., Strongyloides spp., Strongylida fam. gen. sp., Enterobius anthropopitheci, Subulura sp., Ascarididae gen. sp., and Protospirura muricola. The parasite fauna of the Rubondo chimpanzees is similar to wild chimpanzees living in their natural habitats, but Rubondo chimpanzees have a lower prevalence of strongylids (9%, 3.8%) and a higher prevalence of E. anthropopitheci (8.6%, 17.9%) than reported elsewhere. Species prevalence was similar between our two surveys, with the exception of Strongyloides spp. being higher in the first survey. None of these species are considered to pose a serious health risk to chimpanzees, but continued monitoring of the population and surveys of the parasitic fauna of the two coinhabitant primate species and other animals, natural reservoir hosts of some of the same parasites, is important to better understand the dynamics of host–parasite ecology and potential long‐term implications for chimpanzees introduced into a new habitat. The preferential use of one hand over the other is considered the primary behavioral expression of structural and functional asymmetry in cerebral structures, which is a decisive factor in human evolution. We present the first analysis of manual laterality in a form of object play—stone handling (SH) behavior—in a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques. Defined as a stone-directed manipulative activity, and comprised of multiple one-handed SH patterns (e.g., grabbing a stone in one hand and cradling it against its chest), as well as coordinated two-handed SH patterns with manual role differentiation (e.g., holding a stone with one hand and rubbing it with the other), SH behavior is a good candidate for the study of hand lateralization. We systematically followed the methodological framework developed by McGrew and Marchant (1997) to measure and analyze the presence, strength, and direction of manual preference in the performance of SH behavior and in various SH patterns, both at the individual and group level. Some individuals showed a significant manual lateral bias on a single SH pattern (hand preference), whereas others showed consistency in laterality across all or most of the SH patterns they performed (hand specialization). At the group level, we found that, although their collective distribution of left versus right remained random, most subjects were either significantly but incompletely lateralized, or completely lateralized within particular SH patterns (pattern specialization), but not across all SH patterns (no handedness for SH behavior as a whole). As predicted by the task-complexity model, hand specialization and handedness were stronger in the coordinated bimanual SH patterns than in the unimanual patterns. We discuss the implications of our findings for the evolution of manual preferences in noninstrumental object manipulation versus stone tool use in nonhuman primates and hominins.  相似文献

This is the first detailed report of social factors affecting fish-eating in Japanese macaques under natural circumstances. We video-recorded a complete event of fish eating, involving a new fish food species for the monkeys on Koshima island. Following the discovery of a large beached sea bass by a peripheral male, we observed a total of 16 individuals feeding on the fish in turns, and interacting around it. The rank order of access to the fish was mainly explained by the spatial position of group members, whereas dominance determined how long the fish was monopolized. Although limited, the tolerated presence of close-bystanders while feeding was affected by kinship and affiliation. Genealogic data suggested that fish-eating behavior was well maintained in terms of maternal lineages. This report should contribute to a better understanding of how social features may constrain the long-term diffusion of feeding innovations in free-ranging primate groups.  相似文献

Several species of Aspidosperma plants are used to treat diseases in the tropics, including Aspidosperma ramiflorum, which acts against leishmaniasis, an activity that is experimentally confirmed. The species, known as guatambu-yellow, yellow peroba, coffee-peroba andmatiambu, grows in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil in the South to the Southeast regions. Through a guided biofractionation of A. ramiflorum extracts, the plant activity against Plasmodium falciparum was evaluated in vitro for toxicity towards human hepatoma G2 cells, normal monkey kidney cells and nonimmortalised human monocytes isolated from peripheral blood. Six of the seven extracts tested were active at low doses (half-maximal drug inhibitory concentration < 3.8 µg/mL); the aqueous extract was inactive. Overall, the plant extracts and the purified compounds displayed low toxicity in vitro. A nonsoluble extract fraction and one purified alkaloid isositsirikine (compound 5) displayed high selectivity indexes (SI) (= 56 and 113, respectively), whereas compounds 2 and 3 were toxic (SI < 10). The structure, activity and low toxicity of isositsirikine in vitro are described here for the first time in A. ramiflorum, but only the neutral and precipitate plant fractions were tested for activity, which caused up to 53% parasitaemia inhibition of Plasmodium berghei in mice with blood-induced malaria. This plant species is likely to be useful in the further development of an antimalarial drug, but its pharmacological evaluation is still required.  相似文献

Introduction

Interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) are up-regulated in injured and osteoarthritic knee joints. IL-1 and TNF-α inhibit integrative meniscal repair; however, the mechanisms by which this inhibition occurs are not fully understood. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) increases meniscal cell proliferation and accumulation, and enhances integrative meniscal repair. An improved understanding of the mechanisms modulating meniscal cell proliferation and migration will help to improve approaches for enhancing intrinsic or tissue-engineered repair of the meniscus. The goal of this study was to examine the hypothesis that IL-1 and TNF-α suppress, while TGF-β1 enhances, cellular proliferation and migration in cell and tissue models of meniscal repair.  相似文献

A new class of cannabimimetic indoles, with 3-phenylacetyl or substituted 3-phenylacetyl substituents, has been prepared and their affinities for the cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors have been determined. In general those compounds with a 2-substituted phenylacetyl group have good affinity for both receptors. The 4-substituted analogs have little affinity for either receptor, while the 3-substituted compounds are intermediate in their affinities. Two of these compounds, 1-pentyl-3-(2-methylphenylacetyl)indole (JWH-251) and 1-pentyl-3-(3-methoxyphenylacetyl)indole (JWH-302), have 5-fold selectivity for the CB1 receptor with modest affinity for the CB2 receptor. GTPgammaS determinations indicate that both compounds are highly efficacious agonists at the CB1 receptor and partial agonists at the CB2 receptor.  相似文献

We employ an implementation of rapid-scan Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) microspectroscopic imaging to acquire time-resolved images for assessing the non-repetitive reorganizational dynamics of aqueous dispersions of multilamellar lipid vesicles (MLVs) derived from distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC). The spatially and temporally resolved images allow direct and simultaneous determinations of various physical and chemical properties of the MLVs, including the main thermal gel to liquid crystalline phase transition, comparisons of vesicle diffusion rates in both phases and the variation in lipid bilayer packing properties between the inner and outer lamellae defining the vesicle. Specifically, in the lipid liquid crystalline phase, the inner bilayers of the MLVs are more intermolecularly ordered than the outer regions, while the intramolecular acyl chain order/disorder parameters, reflecting the overall characteristics of the fluid phase, remain uniform across the vesicle diameter. In contrast, the lipid vesicle gel phase displays no intermolecular or intramolecular dependence as a function of distance from the MLV center.  相似文献

Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) offer a distinct option for silencing gene expression in mammalian cells. However, the full value of PNAs has not been realized, and the rules governing the recognition of cellular targets by PNAs remain obscure. Here we examine the uptake of PNAs and PNA-peptide conjugates by immortal and primary human cells and compare peptide-mediated and DNA/lipid-mediated delivery strategies. We find that both peptide-mediated and lipid-mediated delivery strategies promote entry of PNA and PNA-peptide conjugates into cells. Confocal microscopy reveals a punctate distribution of PNA and PNA-peptide conjugates regardless of the delivery strategy used. Peptide D(AAKK)(4) and a peptide containing a nuclear localization sequence (NLS) promote the spontaneous delivery of antisense PNAs into cultured cells. The PNA-D(AAKK)(4) conjugate inhibits expression of human caveolin 1 (hCav-1) in both HeLa and primary endothelial cells. DNA/lipid-mediated delivery requires less PNA, while peptide-mediated delivery is simpler and is less toxic to primary cells. The ability of PNA-peptide conjugates to enter primary and immortal human cells and inhibit gene expression supports the use of PNAs as antisense agents for investigating the roles of proteins in cells. Both DNA/lipid-mediated and peptide-mediated delivery strategies are efficient, but the compartmentalized localization of PNAs suggests that improving the cellular distribution may lead to increased efficacy.  相似文献

In the present scoping review, we explore whether existing evidence supports the premise that social determinants of health (SDoH) affect immigrant health outcomes through their effects on the microbiome. We adapt the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities' research framework to propose a conceptual model that considers the intersection of SDoH, the microbiome, and health outcomes in immigrants. We use this conceptual model as a lens through which to explore recent research about SDoH, biological factors associated with changes to immigrants' microbiomes, and long-term health outcomes. In the 17 articles reviewed, dietary acculturation, physical activity, ethnicity, birthplace, age at migration and length of time in the host country, socioeconomic status, and social/linguistic acculturation were important determinants of postmigration microbiome-related transformations. These factors are associated with progressive shifts in microbiome profile with time in host country, increasing the risks for cardiometabolic, mental, immune, and inflammatory disorders and antibiotic resistance. The evidence thus supports the premise that SDoH influence immigrants' health postmigration, at least in part, through their effects on the microbiome. Omission of important postmigration social-ecological variables (e.g., stress, racism, social/family relationships, and environment), limited research among minoritized subgroups of immigrants, complexity and inter- and intra-individual differences in the microbiome, and limited interdisciplinary and biosocial collaboration restrict our understanding of this area of study. To identify potential microbiome-based interventions and promote immigrants' well-being, more research is necessary to understand the intersections of immigrant health with factors from the biological, behavioral/psychosocial, physical/built environment, and sociocultural environment domains at all social-ecological levels.  相似文献
