Abstract Water balance characteristics of temperate zone fly pupae are compared with the characteristics of flies inhabiting the tropics. The flies, all of which were reared without diapause, had very similar equilibrium weights that were quite high (av 0.90-0.92), thus implying a limited capacity to absorb water from a subsaturated atmosphere. Likewise, the critical transition temperatures (CTT) were nearly the same for all the flies. Net transpiration rates at 20oC are a function of size, but the rate is less size dependent as temperature increases. When water loss is examined across a broad temperature range, as described by activation energies, it is apparent that the tropical flies lose water at a greater rate than their temperate zone counterparts. Activation energy may be a good parameter to use in evaluating habitat preference and suitability for a species because it describes water loss as a function of temperature, and thus is likely to be a good indicator of the insect's response to the fluctuating temperatures that occur naturally.  相似文献

In a preliminary cladistic analysis of the bivalve family Cardiidae (Schneider 1992), members of the subfamilies Protocardiinae, Lahilliinae, and Laevicardiinae, plus the genus Nemocardium , were found to be the least derived taxa of cardiids. A cladistic analysis is undertaken of the genera and subgenera of these cardiid taxa, plus several Mesozoic taxa which have never been assigned to any subfamily. The Late Triassic Tulongocardium , which is placed in Tulongocardiinae subfam. n., is the sister taxon to all other cardiids. Protocardiinae is restricted to the genus Protocardia. Most other Mesozoic taxa which have been placed in the Protocardiinae are found to be members of the Lahilliinae. Nemocardium is placed in the Laevicardiinae. Incacardium, Pleuriocardia , and Dochmocardia form a monophyletic group, Pleuriocardiinae subfam. n. Pleuriocardiinae, Laevicardiinae, and the remaining members of the Cardiidae (herein informally termed "cucardiids") form a monophyletic group.  相似文献

Abstract: We evaluated the ability of a set of published trans-species molecular sexing primers and a set of walrus-specific primers, which we developed, to accurately identify sex of 235 Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens). The trans-species primers were developed for mammals and targeted the X- and Y-gametologs of the zinc finger protein genes (ZFX, ZFY). We extended this method by using these primers to obtain sequence from Pacific and Atlantic walrus (O. r. rosmarus) ZFX and ZFY genes to develop new walrus-specific primers, which yield polymerase chain reaction products of distinct lengths (327 and 288 base pairs from the X- and Y-chromosome, respectively), allowing them to be used for sex determination. Both methods yielded a determination of sex in all but 1–2% of samples with an accuracy of 99.6–100%. Our walrus-specific primers offer the advantage of small fragment size and facile application to automated electrophoresis and visualization.  相似文献

THERE are at least two mechanisms for genetic recombination of phage S13–primary and secondary. They are distinguished by the amount of phage recombination observed in recombination-deficient (recA) bacterial hosts. An S13 cross performed in either of the recA hosts, Escherichia coli JC15531 or AB24632, yields a recombination frequency that is greatly reduced from that found in a rec+ host3, 4; this suggests that the recA gene is required for the primary mechanism of S13 recombination. But even in a recA host the phage undergoes a small residual amount of recombination3 which has been attributed to a minor, secondary mechanism. Apparently the secondary mechanism functions in a recA cell and is only revealed when the primary mechanism is eliminated.  相似文献

During the past century, the upland breeding areas of Hen Harriers in Ireland have been extensively afforested. There is no evidence that this species avoids breeding in heavily forested landscapes and, indeed, young commercial forests in their second rotation are often selected as nest‐sites. However, Hen Harriers have coexisted with these forested areas for only a few decades and it is possible that such landscapes are suboptimal. We examined the relationship between breeding success and habitat using a dataset spanning three years and four study areas in the south and west of Ireland. We assessed whether nest success and fledged brood size were related to habitat type, both at the nest‐site and in the surrounding landscape. Neither measure of breeding productivity was related to total forest cover or to percentage cover of closed canopy forest in the landscape. However, in a subset of areas, high cover of second‐rotation pre‐thicket (young forests planted on land from which a first rotation has already been harvested) in the surrounding landscape was associated with low levels of breeding success. This may be due to factors related to predation, disturbance or prey availability. The fact that second‐rotation pre‐thicket is a preferred habitat for nesting in Ireland suggests that Hen Harriers may be making suboptimal decisions in the landscapes available to them.  相似文献

There is now unequivocal evidence for global climate change; however, its potential impacts on evolutionary processes remain unclear. Many species have responded to contemporary climate change through shifts in their geographic range. This could lead to increased sympatry between recently diverged species; likely increasing the potential for hybridization. Recently, following a series of warm winters, southern flying squirrels ( Glaucomys volans ) in Ontario, Canada rapidly expanded their northern range limit resulting in increased sympatry with the closely related northern flying squirrel ( Glaucomys sabrinus ). This provided the opportunity to test the prediction that contemporary climate change can act as a catalyst creating conditions for the formation of hybrid zones. Following extensive sampling and molecular analyses (nuclear and mitochondrial DNA), we identified the occurrence of hybridization between sympatric G. sabrinus and G. volans . There was evidence of backcrossing but not of extensive introgession, consistent with the hypothesis of recent rather than historic hybridization. To our knowledge, this is the first report of hybrid zone formation following a range expansion induced by contemporary climate change. This is also the first report of hybridization between North American flying squirrel species.  相似文献

  • 1 The transport of particulate material in a multiply-impounded southern African river was studied from source to mouth over a period of 2 years during base flow conditions.
  • 2 More than 95% of the dissolved and particulate material in transport was ultra fine (<80 μm). We conclude that too much emphasis has been placed on coarse material (>1 mm) in theories of river ecosystem functioning.
  • 3 The ratio of CPOM:FPOM (1000–4000:250–1000 μm) in transport decreased with increasing stream order as a result of inputs of FPOM from pollution sources and from plankton blooms discharged from reservoirs.
  • 4 The downstream effects of impoundment depended largely on the type of release and the quality of the inflowing water: surface-releasing reservoirs in the clean, upper reaches of the river had the least effect on transported material. A polluted surface-release impoundment in the mid-reaches of the river converted the particle size spectrum of the river from small (<80 μm) to large (250–1000 μm). Bottom-released water carried high concentrations (36–190 g m3) of small (<5 μm) and largely inorganic (86–93%) material.
  • 5 The distance required for zooplankton densities to reduce by 95% was between 4 and 8 km downstream of an impoundment, except below a polluted impoundment where zooplankton densities took 32–35 km to reduce by 95%.
  • 6 Most of the downstream changes in transported organic matter in the Buffalo River are due to inflows of agricultural and urban effluent. These disturbances to the river cause greater perturbations than do the impoundments.

SYNOPSIS Cyclophosphamide (Cy), 125 or 200 mg/kg body weight, injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) into BALB/c mice one day before infection with amastigotes of Leishmania donovani, by the 8th day postinfection caused a significant decrease in the mean numbers of parasites in spleens and livers when compared to mice injected with phosphate buffered saline (PBS). When 125 mg/kg was injected into chronically infected mice (on day 34 of infection), however, within 2 days (day 36) mean parasite levels in both the spleens and livers were statistically greater than in PBS-treated controls. Similarly, when a series of 6 Cy injections, 50 mg/kg each, was injected over a period of 8 days during the chronic stage of infection, the mean parasite levels in both spleens and livers were significantly increased over those of PBS-treated controls. Druing the chronic stage of infection, Cy injections suppressed the immunity to superinfection. Neither plasma nor parasitized peritoneal macrophages obtained from Cy-treated mice, when compared to PBS-treated mice, differed in their respective capacities to influence the growth of intracellular amastigote of L. donovani in vitro. Passive transfer of hyperimmune mouse serum could not reverse the immunosuppressive effects of Cy upon chronic leishmaniasis in the mouse. It is suggested that neither readily demonstrable anti-leishmanial humoral factors nor “immune” macrophages per se, plays a major role in acquired immunity to leishmaniasis in the mouse.  相似文献
