Aspects of the structure and ultrastructure of the fusiform cambial cells of the taproot of Aesculus hippocastanum L. (horse chestnut) are described in relation to the seasonal cycle of cambial activity and dormancy. Particular attention is directed at cell walls and the microtubule and microfilament components of the cytoskeleton, using a range of cytochemical and immunolocalization techniques at the optical and electron-microscopical levels. During the dormant phase, cambial cell walls are thick and multi-layered, the cells possess a helical array of cortical microtubules, and microfilament bundles are oriented axially. In the early stages of reactivation, vesicle-like profiles are associated with the cell walls, whereas arrangement of the cytoskeletal elements remains unchanged. In the succeeding active phase, the cell walls are thin, and cortical microtubules form a random array, although microfilament bundles maintain a near-axial orientation. The observations are discussed in relation to the seasonal cycle of wall structure and cortical microtubule rearrangement within the vascular cambium of hardwood trees. It is suggested that the cell-wall thickening at the onset of cambial dormancy, which is associated with the presence of a helical cortical microtubule array, should be considered to be secondary wall thickening, and that selective lysis of this secondary wall layer during cambial reactivation restores the thinner, primary wall found around active cambial cells.  相似文献

1. Individual fitness is often assumed to be positively correlated with body size, but this has rarely been explored under realistic field conditions. This assumption was tested in a minute parasitoid foraging for planthopper eggs in saltmarsh habitats. 2. We used a novel sampling technique that captures females as they naturally die and fall off the vegetation, and estimated their oviposition success according to the number of eggs remaining in their bodies. 3. Our results support a positive relationship between oviposition success and body size of female parasitoids. 4. Only a single female had exhausted her eggs before she died suggesting that the larger body size advantage is not realised primarily via increased fecundity, but instead via increased longevity or foraging‐efficiency.  相似文献

Abstract Water balance characteristics of temperate zone fly pupae are compared with the characteristics of flies inhabiting the tropics. The flies, all of which were reared without diapause, had very similar equilibrium weights that were quite high (av 0.90-0.92), thus implying a limited capacity to absorb water from a subsaturated atmosphere. Likewise, the critical transition temperatures (CTT) were nearly the same for all the flies. Net transpiration rates at 20oC are a function of size, but the rate is less size dependent as temperature increases. When water loss is examined across a broad temperature range, as described by activation energies, it is apparent that the tropical flies lose water at a greater rate than their temperate zone counterparts. Activation energy may be a good parameter to use in evaluating habitat preference and suitability for a species because it describes water loss as a function of temperature, and thus is likely to be a good indicator of the insect's response to the fluctuating temperatures that occur naturally.  相似文献

In a preliminary cladistic analysis of the bivalve family Cardiidae (Schneider 1992), members of the subfamilies Protocardiinae, Lahilliinae, and Laevicardiinae, plus the genus Nemocardium , were found to be the least derived taxa of cardiids. A cladistic analysis is undertaken of the genera and subgenera of these cardiid taxa, plus several Mesozoic taxa which have never been assigned to any subfamily. The Late Triassic Tulongocardium , which is placed in Tulongocardiinae subfam. n., is the sister taxon to all other cardiids. Protocardiinae is restricted to the genus Protocardia. Most other Mesozoic taxa which have been placed in the Protocardiinae are found to be members of the Lahilliinae. Nemocardium is placed in the Laevicardiinae. Incacardium, Pleuriocardia , and Dochmocardia form a monophyletic group, Pleuriocardiinae subfam. n. Pleuriocardiinae, Laevicardiinae, and the remaining members of the Cardiidae (herein informally termed "cucardiids") form a monophyletic group.  相似文献

Abstract: We evaluated the ability of a set of published trans-species molecular sexing primers and a set of walrus-specific primers, which we developed, to accurately identify sex of 235 Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens). The trans-species primers were developed for mammals and targeted the X- and Y-gametologs of the zinc finger protein genes (ZFX, ZFY). We extended this method by using these primers to obtain sequence from Pacific and Atlantic walrus (O. r. rosmarus) ZFX and ZFY genes to develop new walrus-specific primers, which yield polymerase chain reaction products of distinct lengths (327 and 288 base pairs from the X- and Y-chromosome, respectively), allowing them to be used for sex determination. Both methods yielded a determination of sex in all but 1–2% of samples with an accuracy of 99.6–100%. Our walrus-specific primers offer the advantage of small fragment size and facile application to automated electrophoresis and visualization.  相似文献

  • 1 The transport of particulate material in a multiply-impounded southern African river was studied from source to mouth over a period of 2 years during base flow conditions.
  • 2 More than 95% of the dissolved and particulate material in transport was ultra fine (<80 μm). We conclude that too much emphasis has been placed on coarse material (>1 mm) in theories of river ecosystem functioning.
  • 3 The ratio of CPOM:FPOM (1000–4000:250–1000 μm) in transport decreased with increasing stream order as a result of inputs of FPOM from pollution sources and from plankton blooms discharged from reservoirs.
  • 4 The downstream effects of impoundment depended largely on the type of release and the quality of the inflowing water: surface-releasing reservoirs in the clean, upper reaches of the river had the least effect on transported material. A polluted surface-release impoundment in the mid-reaches of the river converted the particle size spectrum of the river from small (<80 μm) to large (250–1000 μm). Bottom-released water carried high concentrations (36–190 g m3) of small (<5 μm) and largely inorganic (86–93%) material.
  • 5 The distance required for zooplankton densities to reduce by 95% was between 4 and 8 km downstream of an impoundment, except below a polluted impoundment where zooplankton densities took 32–35 km to reduce by 95%.
  • 6 Most of the downstream changes in transported organic matter in the Buffalo River are due to inflows of agricultural and urban effluent. These disturbances to the river cause greater perturbations than do the impoundments.

The response of Eucalyptus grandis seedlings to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations was examined by growing seedlings at either 340 or 660 n mol CO2 mol-1 for 6 weeks. Graded increments of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers were added to a soil deficient in these nutrients to establish if the growth response to increasing nutrient availability was affected by CO2 concentration. At 660 μmol CO2 mol-1, seedling dry weight was up to five times greater than at 340 μmol CO2 mol-1. The absolute response was largest when both nitrogen and phosphorus availability was high but the relative increase in dry weight was greatest at low phosphorus availability. At 340 μmol CO2 mol-1 and high nitrogen availability, growth was stimulated by addition of phosphorus up to 76 mg kg 1 soil. Further additions of phosphorus had little effect. However, at 660 μmol CO2 mol-1, growth only began to plateau at a phosphorus addition rate of 920mg kg-1 soil. At 340 μmol CO2 mol-1 and high phosphorus availability, increasing nitrogen from 40 to 160mg kg-1 soil had little effect on plant growth. At high CO2, growth reached a maximum at between 80 and 160mg nitrogen kg-1 soil. Total uptake of phosphorus was greater at high CO2 concentration at all fertilizer addition rates, but nitrogen uptake was either lower or unchanged at high CO2 concentration except at the highest nitrogen fertilizer rate. The shoot to root ratio was increased by CO2 enrichment, primarily because the specific leaf weight was greater. The nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in the foliage was lower at elevated CO2 concentration partly because of the higher specific leaf weight. These results indicate that critical foliar concentrations currently used to define nutritional status and fertilizer management may need to be reassessed as the atmospheric CO2 concentration rises.  相似文献

1. Egg parasitoids in the genus Anagrus (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are important mortality factors for grape leafhoppers ( Erythroneura elegantula ; Homoptera: Cicadellidae) in California vineyards, yet must overwinter in habitats external to these vineyards. Existing evidence suggests that French prune trees, which harbour the overwintering host Edwardsiana prunicola , planted adjacent to vineyards may enhance early-season abundance of Anagrus.
2. Anagrus overwintering in French prune tree refuges were labelled with the trace element rubidium in four separate experiments. Rubidium-labelled Anagrus were captured in adjacent vineyards in two of the experiments, confirming that French prune trees contribute to early-season Anagrus populations. Anagrus from refuges were captured at the most distant sampling positions, 100 m from refuges.
3. Use of rare element labelling has, for the first time, enabled the relative contribution of different sources to early-season colonization by this parasitoid to be quantified. Refuges contributed 1% and 34% of Anagrus colonizing two of the experimental vineyards, respectively. The remainder originated from overwintering habitats external to the French prune/vineyard system.
4. The spatial patterns of Anagrus originating from external overwintering habitats suggest that the French prune trees are generating a 'windbreak effect'. Anagrus dispersing within the windstream colonized vineyards at a higher-than-average rate immediately downwind of refuges.
5. The amount of colonization by Anagrus from external overwintering habitats was apparently related to the distance to presumed overwintering habitats. These findings demonstrate that both the number of natural enemies emerging from a refuge and the composition of the surrounding landscape are important in determining the impact of local, small-scale habitat manipulations.  相似文献
