Plants from 2nd to 6th year leys of the legume goat's rue (Galega orientalis Lam.) were tested for infection with bean yellow mosaic (BYMV), bean common mosaic (BCMV), alfalfa mosaic (AMV), broad bean stain (BBSV), red clover mottle (RCMV) and cucumber mosaic (CMV) viruses by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), electron microscopy, and by sap-inoculation to various test plant species. No virus infections were observed in goat's rue in the field. Glasshouse-grown seedlings of goat's rue were inoculated with the above viruses. No virus was detected in the inoculated plants. The results suggest that goat's rue is extremely resistant to the above six viruses which are important in other forage legumes.  相似文献

1. We made an empirical test of a recent proposal that feeding niche widths might be determined as variance of stable isotope values. We determined δ 13C and δ 15N values of perch ( Perca fluviatilis ), roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) and their prey from a biomanipulated lake, when the mass removal of fish led to reduced inter- and intra-specific competition and increases in zooplankton abundance and body size.
2. After the first fish removals, both perch and roach mean δ 13C values decreased and mean δ 15N values increased, indicating a greater diet contribution from pelagic sources.
3. Variances of both δ 13C and δ 15N values first increased in both fish populations, indicating a wider food spectrum and expanded feeding niche width following reduced fish abundances. Observed changes were greater for the perch population than for roach.
4. In 2006, the perch population abruptly changed its diet so that most individuals were primarily consuming the abundant young-of-the-year fish, and this was reflected in significantly reduced variances of both δ 13C and δ 15N values.
5. We conclude that isotopic variance can indeed reflect changes in feeding niche width and offers a promising way to study such general ecological concepts.  相似文献

Within-lake variability in carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
1. We assessed spatial and temporal variation in carbon and nitrogen isotopic signatures in different compartments of a single lake ecosystem. Stable isotope analyses were made on samples of particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, periphyton, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and fish collected from several locations throughout the ice‐free period. 2. No spatial variation in δ13C or δ15N values was found for pelagic samples of POM and zooplankton. However, pelagic δ15N signatures increased steadily through the summer resulting in an almost 6‰ average increase in POM and zooplankton. A concurrent decrease in epilimnetic nitrate concentrations suggested that the increase in δ15N of POM and zooplankton could have resulted from a progressive 15N‐enrichment of the available inorganic nitrogen pool as the size of this pool was reduced. 3. Significant spatial variation in isotopic ratios was observed within littoral and profundal communities. Some spatial differences were likely related to lake‐specific characteristics, such as a major inlet and a small harbour area and some were interconnected with temporal events. 4. Marked differences between spring and autumn δ15N and δ13C values of fish at one site probably reflected a spring spawning immigration from a larger downstream lake and also indicated limited dispersal of these immigrants. 5. Our results indicate that restricted sampling of ecosystem components from lakes may provide misleading single values for the isotope end members needed for quantitative uses of stable isotopes in mixing models and for estimating trophic position. Hence we strongly advise that studies of individual lakes, or multiple lake comparisons, that utilise stable isotope analyses should pay more attention to potential within lake spatial and temporal variability of isotope ratios.  相似文献

The geographical characteristics of a total of 1839 forest fragments surrounded by sugar cane fields were studied in the Brazilian Atlantic rain forest region of the northeastern state of Pernambuco. The size and shape of the fragments as well as inter-fragment distances and the effects of varying edge width were examined using a geographical information system. The analyses show that the fragments are relatively small and close to each other. Approximately 48% of the rain forest fragments are <10 hectares, while only about 7% are >100 hectares. Forest fragments are close to each other, as fragments located 50m or less apart formed groups that included ca. 50% of the total forest area. At 350m inter-fragment distance, 98% of the rain forest area was included in groups of fragments. Due to the small size and irregular shape of the fragments, the total area of edge zone exceeds that of the interior habitat when the edge width is ca. 60m. At an edge width of 300m ca. 94% of the total fragment area is edge zone. For conservation purposes, ways of establishing networks of forest fragments connected by corridors and stepping stone fragments are demonstrated using GIS. Simulations using these techniques show that reforestation of sugar cane fields between the forest fragments would considerably increase the area of interior forest habitat and connectivity between fragments.  相似文献

The effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the photosynthetic and UV‐screening pigments in needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) saplings were studied in a UV‐exclusion field chamber experiment in northern Finland (67°N) during 2001–2002. The chambers held filters that excluded both UVB and UVA, only UVB, transmitted all UV, or lacked filters. Analyses of control needles (no filter and polyethene filter) showed that the first changes to occur in spring (end of April) was an abrupt increase in the epoxidation state (EPS) of the xanthophyll cycle pigments, likely in relation with the beginning of the photosynthetic activity. The concentration of chlorophyll, lutein, neoxanthin, α‐carotene, β‐carotene, and the size of the xanthophyll cycle pool (violaxanthin+antheraxanthin+zeaxanthin=VAZ) changed only later when needles reached their summer photosynthesis state. Exclusion of UV radiation significantly affected the xanthophyll cycle but not the other photosynthetic pigments analysed. Interestingly, the effects on xanthophylls were dependent on the sampling date. Under UVA/B‐exclusion, the EPS was increased and VAZ pool size was unchanged in April, whereas EPS remained unchanged and the VAZ pool size was reduced in May and June. The existence of two sustained and active antenna modes during winter and summer could be an explanation for the specific UV‐exclusion effect in the different season. A high‐performance liquid chromatography analysis of soluble phenolics showed that the exclusion of UVA/B radiation caused a significant effect on five compounds out of 46 studied, without affecting the concentration of the total soluble phenolics. Under UVA/B‐exclusion, the concentration of three of them (secoisolariciresinol‐glucopyranoside, two unknown) was reduced while the concentration of dicoumaroyl‐astragalin and pinosylvin monomethylether was increased compared with both controls separately. In general, the exclusion of UVA/B caused a stronger effect than the exclusion of UVB on both photosynthetic and UV screening pigments. The effects of UV radiation on xanthophyll cycle pigments were season‐specific and detectable only under stressful spring conditions (freezing temperatures and high irradiance due to snow reflection). The effect on the xanthophyll cycle could be a direct consequence of UV treatments, or an indirect consequence of the changed flavonoid composition, or a combination of both.  相似文献

The value of using characters from multiple sources – chromosomes, ecology, gene sequences, and morphology – to evaluate the species status of closely related black flies is demonstrated for three European members of the Simulium vernum group: Simulium crenobium (Knoz, 1961), Simulium juxtacrenobium Bass & Brockhouse, 1990, and Simulium vernum s.s. Macquart, 1826. Simulium juxtacrenobium is a chromosomally, molecularly, and morphologically distinct species that diverged from S. crenobium and S. vernum s.s. about 2 Mya. It is specialized for intermittent streams, is univoltine, and is recorded for the first time from northern Europe, based on collections from Finland and Sweden, representing a range extension of about 1800 km. In contrast, S. crenobium, although confirmed as a distinct species, differs from S. vernum s.s. by only a few larval and chromosomal characters, and by a breeding habitat restricted to mountain spring brooks. Whereas all four character sets independently support the specific distinctness of S. juxtacrenobium and S. vernum s.s., multiple character sets are required to establish the specific validity of S. crenobium.  相似文献

The combined effects of partial defoliation and nutrient availabilityon dry matter accumulation and partitioning, and on nitrogenuptake and partitioning, were studied in cloned Betula pendulaRoth saplings. The saplings were randomly assigned to differentnutrient levels (5, 1·5 and 0·5 mol Nm–3)in aerated nutrient culture and to the following defoliationtreatments: (1) control (no damage), (2)damage of the developingmain stem leaves (half of the leaf lamina removed), and (3)removalof the developing main stem leaves (entire leaf lamina removed).Measured in terms of cumulative whole-plant dry weight (includingremoved leaf tissue), the birch saplings were unable to compensatefor the loss of the developing leaves (treatment 3) during the14 d study period. In response to leaf removal (treatment 3)the mean final percentage reduction in whole-plant dry weightwas actually greater than the initial mean percentage reductioncaused by the removal itself; the magnitude of the final reductionwas independent of nutrient availability. After removal of thedeveloping leaves, branch growth was favoured at the expenseof the growth of the rest of the shoot; the relative branchgrowth was most pronounced at the highest nutrient level. Atthe two highest nutrient levels the nitrogen uptake of the saplingswith the developing leaves removed was less than that of undamagedsaplings. We suggest, however, that the incapacity of the saplingsfor compensatory growth after removal of the developing leaveswas primarily due to the decreased total carbon gain of thesaplings rather than to the decreased nitrogen uptake rate.
