Screening of 55 different cyanobacterial strains revealed that an extract from Nostoc XPORK14A drastically modifies the amplitude and kinetics of chlorophyll a fluorescence induction of Synechocystis PCC 6803 cells. After 2 d exposure to the Nostoc XPORK14A extract, Synechocystis PCC 6803 cells displayed reduced net photosynthetic activity and significantly modified electron transport properties of photosystem II under both light and dark conditions. However, the maximum oxidizable amount of P700 was not strongly affected. The extract also induced strong oxidative stress in Synechocystis PCC 6803 cells in both light and darkness. We identified the secondary metabolite of Nostoc XPORK14A causing these pronounced effects on Synechocystis cells. Mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses revealed that this compound, designated as M22, has a non‐peptide structure. We propose that M22 possesses a dual‐action mechanism: firstly, by photogeneration of reactive oxygen species in the presence of light, which in turn affects the photosynthetic machinery of Synechocystis PCC 6803; and secondly, by altering the in vivo redox status of cells, possibly through inhibition of protein kinases.  相似文献

Background

A growing number of studies have sought to examine the health associations of workplace social capital; however, evidence of associations with overweight is sparse. We examined the association between individual perceptions of workplace social capital and overweight among Japanese male and female employees.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We conducted a cross-sectional survey among full-time employees at a company in Osaka prefecture in February 2012. We used an 8-item measure to assess overall and sub-dimensions of workplace social capital, divided into tertiles. Of 1050 employees, 849 responded, and 750 (624 men and 126 women) could be linked to annual health check-up data in the analysis. Binomial logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for overweight (body mass index: ≥25 kg/m2, calculated from measured weight and height) separately for men and women. The prevalence of overweight was 24.5% among men and 14.3% among women. Among men, low levels of bonding and linking social capital in the workplace were associated with a nearly 2-fold risk of overweight compared to high corresponding dimensions of social capital when adjusted for age, sleep hours, physiological distress, and lifestyle. In contrast, among women we found lower overall and linking social capital to be associated with lower odds for overweight even after covariate adjustment. Subsequently, we used multinomial logistic regression analyses to assess the relationships between a 1 standard deviation (SD) decrease in mean social capital and odds of underweight/overweight relative to normal weight. Among men, a 1-SD decrease in overall, bonding, and linking social capital was significantly associated with higher odds of overweight, but not with underweight. Among women, no significant associations were found for either overweight or underweight.

Conclusions/Significance

We found opposite gender relationships between perceived low linking workplace social capital and overweight among Japanese employees.  相似文献

Intentional moving of species threatened by climate change is actively being discussed as a conservation approach. The debate, empirical studies, and policy development, however, are impeded by an inconsistent articulation of the idea. The discrepancy is demonstrated by the varying use of terms, such as assisted migration, assisted colonisation, or managed relocation, and their multiple definitions. Since this conservation approach is novel, and may for instance lead to legislative changes, it is important to aim for terminological consistency. The objective of this study is to analyse the suitability of terms and definitions used when discussing the moving of organisms as a response to climate change. An extensive literature search and review of the material (868 scientific publications) was conducted for finding hitherto used terms (N = 40) and definitions (N = 75), and these were analysed for their suitability. Based on the findings, it is argued that an appropriate term for a conservation approach relating to aiding the movement of organisms harmed by climate change is assisted migration defined as follows: Assisted migration means safeguarding biological diversity through the translocation of representatives of a species or population harmed by climate change to an area outside the indigenous range of that unit where it would be predicted to move as climate changes, were it not for anthropogenic dispersal barriers or lack of time. The differences between assisted migration and other conservation translocations are also discussed. A wide adoption of the clear and distinctive term and definition provided would allow more focused research on the topic and enable consistent implementation as practitioners could have the same understanding of the concept.  相似文献

Controlling accumulations of unwanted biofilms requires an understanding of the mechanisms that organisms use to interact with submerged substrata. While the substratum properties influencing biofilm formation are well studied, those that may lead to cellular or biofilm detachment are not. Surface-grafted stimuli-responsive polymers, such as poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) release attached cells upon induction of environmentally-triggered phase changes. Altering the physicochemical characteristics of such polymeric systems for systematically studying release, however, can alter the phase transition. The physico-chemical changes of thin films of PNIPAAm grafted from initiator-modified self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of ω-substituted alkanethiolates on gold can be altered by changing the composition of the underlying SAM, without affecting the overlying polymer. This work demonstrates that the ability to tune such changes in substratum physico-chemistry allows systematic study of attachment and release of bacteria over a large range of water contact angles. Such surfaces show great promise for studying a variety of interactions at the biointerface. Understanding of the source of this tunability will require further studies into the heterogeneity of such films and further investigation of interactions beyond those of water wettability.  相似文献

Abstract. Data on floristic composition and environmental variables were collected in floristically homogeneous oligotrophic pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests with heath-like under- storey vegetation in eastern Fennoscandia, and ordinated by non-linear multidimensional scaling (NMDS) in order to study the effect of lichen grazing by reindeer on the understorey vegetation. The study sites included areas with varying grazing pressure, as well as 50-yr old grazing exclosures. Sites rich in respectively bryophytes and lichens were placed at opposite ends of the ordination axes, and heavily grazed sites were placed in between them. Reindeer grazing increased the abundance of bryophytes, especially Dicranum spp. and Pleurozium schreberi. Grazing changed the vegetation to the extent that it resembled more mesotrophic sites, but this did not show any relationship with tree volume or other site productivity indicators. This was observed both in the ordination and, in a more compelling way, when exclosures with adjacent grazed areas were compared. No such signs were evident at ungrazed sites, where especially Cladina spp. spatially replace Cladonia spp. and tiny bryophytes like Barbilophozia spp., Polytrichum spp. and Pohlia nutans during succession. Cladina stellaris had almost disappeared from the most intensively grazed sites. The soil at ungrazed sites was characterized by high Al and Fe concentrations and bryophyte-rich sites by high Mn concentrations. Shannon's diversity index, depth of humus layer and proportion of bare ground also increased in sites getting richer in bryophytes.  相似文献

Summary The trade-off between fitness benefits from foraging and associated costs in terms of predation risk is analysed by a simple model which takes into account the differential predation risk for reproducing and non-reproducing individuals. The currency that animals are assumed to maximize is their expected absolute fitness (probability of survival plus half of the expected litter size) after a potential reproductive period. Depending on resource levels and predation risk, this maximization can be achieved by (1) opting for individual survival and behaving as a strict time minimizer, (2) by reproducing at the maximal rate and behaving as a strict energy maximizer or (3) by submaximal reproductive effort and a behaviour intermediate between time minimization and energy maximization. Small changes in the availability of food or cover or in the density of predators can shift the optimum from one strategy to another. The shift is particularly abrupt, if predation pressure increases and the availability of resources remains high. This could explain the spatial and temporal variation in the reproductive effort and body weight observed in boreal small mammals with sustained, multiannual population fluctuations.  相似文献

Abstract. A new measure of compositional turnover rate at any gradient point is proposed. The absolute values of the derivatives of estimated species response curves are used to estimate the instantaneous rate of change of the community. The total gradient length can be found by integrating the instantaneous turnover rates over the gradient span. Both the instantaneous rate and total gradient length have been known under the name of beta diversity. Our method is elaborated for the Gaussian response function. It is compared to Hill's SD measure, much used for estimating the gradient length in connection of Detrended Correspondence Analysis with nonlinear rescaling for axes. The turnover rate along a canopy cover gradient in forest vegetation in Finland was used as an example. Forest site type and stand age were used as subsidiary gradients. The two ways to compute Hill's scaling gave very different results and were not comparable with the new method. The turnover rate was dependent on the gradient position. However, the turnover rate along the gradient of interest and its total length were dependent on the subsidiary gradients.  相似文献

Abstract. The beta-function (β-function) has been suggested for testing the significance of the skewness of species responses along a gradient. However, the location of the optimum and skewness are correlated so that these parameters cannot be estimated independently. The only way for an independent estimation is to let the endpoints of the response curve vary. In that case they would no longer define the range of species occurrence. However, non-linear estimation of endpoints often leads to overwhelming problems in model fitting. Therefore, the beta-function is not suitable to test the shape of species response curves. Hierarchic models proposed by Huisman et al. (1993) seem to be superior to generalized additive models or third-degree polynomials and seem to be the best alternative to study the skewness of responses.  相似文献

To estimate the susceptibility of conifer seedlings to aphids under future tropospheric ozone levels, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings were exposed to ambient and elevated ozone levels in an open-air exposure system. Growth and reproduction of the aphids Schizolachnus pineti and Cinara pinea on Scots pine and Cinara pilicornis on Norway spruce were monitored. Levels of free amino acids in foliage and young shoots were used as indicators of host plant quality. In elevated treatment plots the ozone doses were between 1.2 and 1.7 times the dose in ambient plots in 1990–93. Half of the seedling material in 1992–93 was subjected to nitrogen fertilization treatment to evaluate the effects of increased N deposition. In 1990, population density of S. pineti on pine did not differ between ambient and elevated ozone treatments during growing season, but remained higher in the elevated ozone plot than in the ambient plot at the end of the growing season. This was associated with elevated levels of glutamic acid in foliage. In August 1992, the numbers of S. pineti were consistent between the two ambient ozone plots, but deviated highly between the two ozone-fumigated plots. Glycine concentration in pine foliage was elevated by ozone, but free amino acid concentrations were not related to aphid performance. In 1993, ozone and nitrogen did not significantly affect the relative growth rate (RGR) of S. pineti or C. pinea nymphs on Scots pine, but glutamic acid concentration in foliage was increased by nitrogen fertilization. On Norway spruce, fecundity of C. pilicornis females was higher in elevated ozone treatment, but RGR of nymphs was not affected in 1992. In 1993, RGR of C. pilicornis nymphs was increased by nitrogen fertilization in June, but not affected by ozone. Nitrogen fertilization increased the levels of total free amino acids, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and proline in elongating shoots of Norway spruce, and ozone reduced the concentrations of valine and γ-butyric acid. Our results suggest that availability of nitrogen from soil has a stronger impact on the concentrations of free amino acids in conifer seedlings than ozone. Some episodes of high ozone concentration may increase free amino acids in foliage. Aphid response to ozone was extremely variable, in agreement with previous laboratory experiments. The expected 20–70% increase in ambient concentrations of tropospheric ozone may in some occasions enhance aphid performance on Scots pine and Norway spruce seedlings, but in most cases the ozone effect on the susceptibility of conifer seedlings to sucking insect pests is not important.  相似文献
