Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) was extracted from canine bone matrix, partially purifed and tested for osteoinductivity. A radiographically and histologically detectable ectopic bone formation was induced by 6.0 mg canine (cBMP) in muscle pouch of BALB mouse at 21 days post implantation. Characterization of the cBMP preparation by a gel filtration chromatography defined that the material consisted of proteins or protein complexes with molecular weights from 4 to 120 kD. Abstract. As an example of ecological gradient analysis, Gaussian response functions, with Poisson or quasi-Poisson error distribution, were fitted for diatom taxa on a pH gradient. It is possible to predict or infer the pH of lake water from the fitted curves using the method of maximum likelihood, which is easily implemented in standard non-linear regressionprograms. Due to overdis-persion with respect to the Poisson distribution, moment estimates forthe negative binomial distribution were also applied, both in estimating the species response curves and in prediction. Simulations indicated that the theoretical maximum precision (measuredby standard deviation of prediction errors) in our data set was 0.17 pH units. The observed errors were much greater (SD 0.35 to 0.43). It seems that roughly equal proportions of the excess error were caused (1) by systematic differences between the training (estimation) data and the validation (prediction) data, and (2) from a misspecified model. It is suggested that the error due to model misspecification consists of inadequacy of the presumed error distribution and of inadequacy of the simple Gaussian response function. 相似文献

Parasites are exploiting their host for the resources required for the parasite's reproduction and survival. The effects of antiparasitic treatment during incubation on body mass and return rate in female common eiders Somateria mollissima were examined in a two year study (1998 and 1999) . There was no effect of treatment on nest success, but unsuccessful females had lower body mass. Treatment had no effect on incubation time, mass-loss during incubation or return rate among successful birds. However, treatment lead to higher return rate among unsuccessful birds (treated=69%, n=13; controls=18%, n=11). This pattern remained significant also after including the birds that returned two years after the experiment. We suggest that the unsuccessful females are of lower quality and had higher costs from parasite infections than birds which completed incubation, and that the higher return rate for treated unsuccessful females may mean that costs of parasites are substantial, and that the potential fitness gain from investment in parasite defense and avoidance is large. 相似文献

Summary The model of exploitation ecosystems was re-analysed, assuming that habitat patches are so small that they form only parts of the home range of an individual predator. For habitat complexes where productive patches abound, the results suggested that predation will strongly spill over from productive patches, which set the tune for population dynamics within the whole landscape, to barren ones. This result conforms to the one obtained by T. Oksanen by assuming despotic habitat choice and essentially larger patch sizes. For habitat complexes heavily dominated by the barren habitat, spillover predation was predicted to be weak, as was the case in her large patch model. Unlike in her analysis, however, predation pressure was substantially reduced also within the productive habitat. In habitat complexes where patches are so small that they are exploited in a fine-grained manner, predation pressure was always found to be more intense in the barren habitat, contrary to the predictions of the original model of exploitation ecosystems. This analysis thus suggests that their model is applicable mainly on the landscape level. On the level of individual habitats, the applicability of their results depends on the habitat configuration (at its best for the prevailing habitat of the landscape and for moderate-sized patches of an essentially more productive habitat) and generally decreases with decreasing patch sizes. 相似文献

The production of hepatotoxic cyclic heptapeptides, microcystins, is almost exclusively reported from planktonic cyanobacteria. Here we show that a terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain IO-102-I isolated from a lichen association produces six different microcystins. Microcystins were identified with liquid chromatography-UV mass spectrometry by their retention times, UV spectra, mass fragmentation, and comparison to microcystins from the aquatic Nostoc sp. strain 152. The dominant microcystin produced by Nostoc sp. strain IO-102-I was the highly toxic [ADMAdda(5)]microcystin-LR, which accounted for ca. 80% of the total microcystins. We assigned a structure of [DMAdda(5)]microcystin-LR and [d-Asp(3),ADMAdda(5)]microcystin-LR and a partial structure of three new [ADMAdda(5)]-XR type of microcystin variants. Interestingly, Nostoc spp. strains IO-102-I and 152 synthesized only the rare ADMAdda and DMAdda subfamilies of microcystin variants. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated congruence between genes involved directly in microcystin biosynthesis and the 16S rRNA and rpoC1 genes of Nostoc sp. strain IO-102-I. Nostoc sp. strain 152 and the Nostoc sp. strain IO-102-I are distantly related, revealing a sporadic distribution of toxin production in the genus Nostoc. Nostoc sp. strain IO-102-I is closely related to Nostoc punctiforme PCC 73102 and other symbiotic Nostoc strains and most likely belongs to this species. Together, this suggests that other terrestrial and aquatic strains of the genus Nostoc may have retained the genes necessary for microcystin biosynthesis. 相似文献

Needle damages caused by mining insects on Scots pine and Norway spruce were studied in the vicinity or a pulp mill. The abundance of needles mined by the pine bud moth Exoteleia dodecella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) on Scots pine Pinus sylvestris , and the spruce needle miner Epinotia tedella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) on Norway spruce Picea abies had a significantly peaked response curve on logarithmic distance scale. For pine bud moth, the maximum expected population density was estimated to be at the distance of 1.35 km from the factory. The maximum expected population density for the spruce needle miner was at the distance of 1.53 km from the factory. However, for both species the curves were significantly different among transects. Both species had a peaked and significant response to sulphur level in needles as well. The maximum expected density in pine was at 1270 ppm, and in spruce at 1070 ppm sulphur concentration in pine needles. The results are consistent with earlier reports demonstrating that these mining insects frequently attack trees suffering from air pollution. The nonlinear response of both species to distance from the pulp mill suggests that E. dodecella on pine and E. tedella on spruce are rather indicators of the zone of intermediate air pollution than of strongly polluted or nearly unpolluted sites. This also agrees with the plant stress-insect performance hypothesis indicating that insect response varies with the magnitude of stress, and at very high stress levels a tree no longer provides the insects with relevant food. 相似文献

Spatial variation in the strength of trophic cascades in arctic tundra has been related to flows of subsidies across ecosystem boundaries. Here, we ask whether the input of marine subsidies in tundra systems would cause spatial variation in the strength of rodent–plant interactions between coastal areas, where predators have access to marine‐derived resources, and non‐subsidized inland areas of northern Fennoscandia. We present a detailed evaluation of predator–rodent–vegetation interactions along a coast‐inland gradient, during the 2011 rodent outbreak and the two following decline years, by using direct assessments of rodent impacts and tracing of marine‐derived nutrients in the food web. Our results revealed that the main rodent predator during summer, the long‐tailed jaeger Stercorarius longicaudus, did not benefit from marine resources while breeding (relative dietary proportion in chicks’ diet = 0–3%). Contrary to this pattern, parasitic jaegers S. parasiticus, bred exclusively near the coast and preyed effectively on both marine resources (41% of chicks’ diet) and rodents (12%). Mammalian predators also showed a higher activity during winter near the coast. Despite overall higher predator numbers, no evidence was found for lower rodent population growth rates during the three monitoring summers and for weaker rodent grazing impacts in the coastal area. Instead, we documented pronounced damages caused by lemmings and voles on bryophytes and vascular plants, especially dwarf shrubs (e.g. Vaccinum myrtillus) all along the coast–inland gradient. Taken together, our results did not support the hypothesis that marine subsidies would trigger a trophic cascade in coastal tundra areas of northern Fennoscandia during a major rodent outbreak, probably due to a relatively low diversity of marine‐subsidized predators in the region. Comparative observational and experimental studies at large spatial scales in various arctic regions are absolutely necessary for a better understanding of factors causing regional variations in the functioning of arctic food webs. 相似文献

When the two first eigenvalues of correspondence analysis are close to each other, their order can be reversed due to random variation in the data. The first axis can actually be in any direction in the plane defined by the two axes. However, the configuration of the points in the plane can remain unchanged but their projections onto any line in the plane can be very variable. The ordering in the first axis is preserved in detrending. The second axis is detrended with respect to the first one and therefore very variable configurations result when the orientation of the first axis in the plane is changed.
