Freshly-harvested and dried seeds of Bromus sterilis L. withrespectively 52-54% and less than 10% moisture contents, differedmarkedly in their rates of germination and in their responsesto light. Dried seeds attained full germination in darknessat 15 ?C by 4 d from sowing and were inhibited by the formationof Pfr. In contrast, freshly-harvested seeds required 3-4 weeksto attain maximum germination and were promoted by Pfr. Themodified photoresponse of the seeds was induced only when theseeds were dried in an alternating temperature regime. The resultsare discussed in relation to the importance of desiccation asthe trigger for the transition from the developmental to thegerminative and growth phases of seed maturation of Bromus steriliswhich is well-documented in seeds of other species. Mediterranean ecosystems are among the highest in species richness and endemism globally and are also among the most sensitive to climate and land‐use change. Fire is an important driver of ecosystem processes in these systems; however, fire regimes have been substantially changed by human activities. Climate change is predicted to further alter fire regimes and species distributions, leading to habitat loss and threatening biodiversity. It is currently unknown what the population‐level effects of these landscape‐level changes will be. We linked a spatially explicit stochastic population model to dynamic bioclimate envelopes to investigate the effects of climate change, habitat loss and fragm entation and altered fire regime on population abundances of a long‐lived obligate seeding shrub, Ceanothus verrucosus, a rare endemic species of southern California. We tested a range of fire return intervals under the present and two future climate scenarios. We also assessed the impact of potential anthropogenic land‐use change by excluding land identified as developable by local governments. We found that the 35–50 year fire return interval resulted in the highest population abundances. Expected minimum population abundance (EMA) declined gradually as fire return interval increased, but declined dramatically for shorter fire intervals. Simulated future development resulted in a 33% decline in EMA, but relatively stable population trajectories over the time frame modeled. Relative changes in EMA for alternative fire intervals were similar for all climate and habitat loss scenarios, except under the more severe climate scenario which resulted in a change in the relative ranking of the fire scenarios. Our results show climate change to be the most serious threat facing obligate seeding shrubs embedded in urban landscapes, resulting in population decline and increased local extirpation, and that likely interactions with other threats increase risks to these species. Taking account of parameter uncertainty did not alter our conclusions.  相似文献

Seventy-five per cent of the N2-fixing activity (measured asthe reduction of C2H2 to C2H4) and 50 per cent of the respiratoryactivity of detached soybean root nodules was lost when thewater potential () of the nodules was lowered from approximately–1 ? 105 Pa (turgid nodules) to –9 ? 105 Pa (moderatelystressed nodules). Severely stressed nodules ( = –1.8? 106 Pa) showed almost total loss of N2-fixing activity andup to 80 per cent loss of respiratory activity. Increasing theoxygen partial pressure (PO2) from 104 to 105 Pa completelyrestored both N2-fixation and respiration in moderately stressednodules, but only partial recovery was possible in severelystressed nodules. The activity of the stressed nodules was verylow at low PO2 (5 ? 103 and 104 Pa). The C2H2-reducing activityof nodule slices, nodule breis, and bacteroids from turgid andmoderately stressed nodules was almost identical but some activitywas lost in the breis and bacteroids from severely stressednodules. Calculations showed that at low PO2 (104 and 2 ? 104Pa), the rate of O2 diffusion into severely stressed noduleswas ten times lower than that for turgid nodules, but only fourtimes lower at a higher PO2 (4 ? 104 Pa). Carbon monoxide inhibitionof C2H2 reduction was slower in stressed nodules than in turgidnodules. The results are discussed in view of the possible developmentof a physical barrier to gaseous diffusion and/or the possiblealtered affinity of the nodule leghaemoglobin for O2 in thewater-stressed nodules.  相似文献

In sandy loam infested with Globodera rostochiensis (2–95 eggs g-1 soil) the yield of Desiree potatoes was decreased by 8·2 t ha-1 for every increment of 20 eggs g-1 soil. Oxamyl incorporated in the seedbed at 5 kg ha-1 before planting prevented significant loss of yield and damage to the tubers and minimised nematode increase. Cara and Maris Piper potatoes, which were resistant and tolerant to G. rostochiensis usually responded less to oxamyl than did susceptible cultivars. In a range of cultivars, yield responses to oxamyl treatment of soil infested with G. rostochiensis often differed from those in soil infested with G. pallida. In field experiments, oxamyl controlled G. pallida less than G. rostochiensis. In pots, such differential control of the two species by oxamyl was not observed.  相似文献

Twenty‐six microsatellite loci have been isolated from a dugong (Dugong dugon). The average heterozygosity was 0.52 with two to 10 alleles per locus surveyed from 50 individuals. The markers are suitable for genetic mark–recapture (PID = 5 × 10?16) in dugongs and they could also be used to quantify physical tag loss, estimate relatedness, assign paternity, elucidate population structure and identify migrants. The loci also amplified in Florida manatees (22/26) and Asian elephants (6/26).  相似文献

In the context of an evolutionary study of the chemical communication in termites, sex pheromones and trail‐following pheromones were investigated in two Termopsidae, Zootermopsis nevadensis and Z. angusticollis. In these species, in which the presence of sex‐specific pheromones has been demonstrated previously, the chemical structure of the female sex pheromone has now been identified as (5E)‐2,6,10‐trimethylundeca‐5,9‐dienal and the male sex pheromone as (+)‐ or (?)‐syn‐4,6‐dimethyldodecanal. The amount of sex pheromone was estimated at 5–10 ng per individual in females and 2–5 ng in males. Because these two sympatric species do not differ in their pheromonal chemical composition, reproductive isolation is probably mediated chiefly by differences in dispersal flight chronology. The trail‐following pheromone was shown to be composed of the same compound as the male sex pheromone, that is syn‐4,6‐dimethyldodecanal. The compound syn‐4,6‐dimethyldodecanal was 10 times more active than the racemic (+/?)‐syn + (+/?)‐anti‐4,6‐dimethyldodecanal in eliciting trail‐following. The amount of syn‐4,6‐dimethyldodecanal was estimated at 0.1–0.5 ng per pseudergate. Regarding the phylogenetic aspects, the nature of the female sex pheromone of Zootermopsis is structurally akin to the trail‐following pheromone of Mastotermes darwiniensis of Mastotermitidae and Porotermes adamsoni and Stolotermes victoriensis of Termopsidae. Interestingly, the nature of the trail‐following pheromone of the Termopsinae Zootermopsis is clearly different from that of the Porotermitinae P. adamsoni and the Stolotermitinae S. victoriensis, which mirrors recent molecular data on the paraphyly of Termopsidae. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 519–530.  相似文献

Members of a new genus and species of harpacticoid copepod crustacean appeared in samples from semi-terrestrial (moist arboreal mosses, wet soil) and aquatic (bromeliad tanks, Sphagnum moss, rock pools, stream) habitats in a remnant of the Atlantic Forest in south-eastern Brazil. The new taxon, for which we propose the name Pindamoraria boraceiae sp. nov. , is distinguished by a unique combination of characters, in particular the segmentation and setation pattern of legs 1–4 in both sexes, the structure of leg 5 in the female, and the strongly modified claw of the maxilliped in the male. It most resembles the canthocamptid genera Moraria , Pseudomoraria , Morariopsis and Paramorariopsis . Both previous records of species of Moraria from South America refer to members of Antarctobiotus , which is not considered a member of the Moraria group: Moraria (Kuehneltiella) neotropica Löffler has previously been transferred to Antarctobiotus ; and we propose herein the transfer of Moraria kummeroworum Ebert & Noodt to Antarctobiotus as well. In the New World, the genus Moraria extends only as far south as Honduras; and Pseudomoraria , Morariopsis and Paramorariopsis are Old World genera. 1. It is widely acknowledged that sudden, large‐scale flood pulses are drivers of benthic and planktonic biodiversity change in floodplains. The impact of such pulses on pleuston (biotic communities associated with root systems of floating plants) remains to be demonstrated. Here, we investigate the effects of local and regional drivers on seasonal changes in abundance and diversity of ostracod communities in pleuston. 2. Temporal and spatial distribution patterns of species richness, abundance, diversity and evenness of ostracods associated with the floating water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, in a lentic environment from the upper Paraná River floodplain, were investigated in relation to local, as well as regional, environmental factors. Ostracods were sampled monthly over an annual cycle (March 2004–February 2005). Twenty‐seven species were found, representing the families Cyprididae, Candonidae, Limnocytheridae and Darwinulidae. Both diversity and abundance of ostracod communities showed seasonal changes, although species turn‐over during the year was limited. 3. We tested two hypotheses concerning the causality of these fluctuations: seasonal recruitment and influx of allochthonous ostracods during the flood pulse. Our results indicate that seasonal recruitment is more likely to be the driver of fluctuations in relation to the flood pulse. We postulate that pleuston communities are buffered against possible detrimental effects of flood pulses.  相似文献

Resemblance between animal taxa may be due to convergence rather than to recent common ancestry. Constraints on biological materials and adaptation to particular habits or habitats will produce widespread convergence. How may we distinguish the two causes of resemblance? The relationship between convergence and taxonomy is discussed, demonstrating that the choice of taxonomic method will itself determine the extent to which convergence is perceived. In particular, cladistic analysis based on parsimony will tend to minimise and thus conceal convergence: neither the resulting cladogram nor a consistency index derived from it can be used to assess the prevalence of convergence. With any taxonomic system, there can be no substitute for evaluation of the morphological characters used. Complementary use of molecular characters shows promise: we wait further understanding of constraints in genetic evolution and of the possibilities of convergence at this level also. These general principles are illustrated with a range of examples from within and between invertebrate phyla: the phylogeny of Cnidaria and Platyhelminthes cannot be traced with certainty, but where the fossil record allows clear rooting, as for the echinoderms and in particular the echinoids, combination of morphological and molecular methods has made much progress. Sub-groups within a phylum, for example opisthobranch molluscs and the dipteran Phoridae, may show an uncontested phylogeny, and here studies have precisely identified convergence and shown that it may be the commoner cause of resemblance. Adaptation to exacting environments shown by terrestial and freshwater nemertines may also result in a predominance of convergent resemblance. Traditional grouping of phyla breaks down on re-examination of supposedly key characters, such as segmentation, body cavities, germ layers and symmetry, each of which must have had multiple origins: nor are developmental stages (especially not larvae) a reliable guide to relationships. Demarcation of phyla may be difficult, as with arthropods, and location of phyla is even more difficult, due to their early and rapid radiation. Over-simplified definition of characters has bedevilled invertebrate classification and the use of molecular data has not yet resolved the major controversies. The question ‘How common is convergence?’ remains unanswered and may be unanswerable. Our examples indicate that even the minimum detectable levels of convergence are often high, and we conclude that at all levels convergence has been greatly underestimated.  相似文献
