Ranunculus flabellaris Rafin., an aquatic buttercup, exhibitsheterophylly at the level of cellular ultrastructure. Comparedto terrestrial leaves, underwater leaves have thinner epidermalcell walls and more numerous paramural bodies per epidermaland mesophyll cell cross-section. The number of chloroplastsand mitochondria in cell cross-sections also contrasts betweenthe two leaf types. Despite within-and between-leaf variations,different patterns of organelle distribution for the two leafforms were found using principal coordinates analysis. In addition,underwater leaf chloroplasts are smaller, have fewer grana,a greater number of thylakoids/granum, and less starch comparedto chloroplasts from terrestrial leaves. At the ultrastructurallevel, submergence in ABA solution does not produce a leaf withas many characteristics of the terrestrial environment, as shownin previous studies of leaf morphology and anatomy. While numberand distribution of organelles in ABA-treated leaves are similarto terrestrial leaves, some features of chloroplast internalstructure and paramural body number and distribution resembleunderwater leaves. It is postulated that ABA acts as a morphogeninvolved in guiding the irreversible processes of leaf development,but certain subcellular characteristics may be determined directlyby the physical environment. Stomata of yellow lupin leaves are remarkably insensitive toabscisic acid (ABA). Stomatal resistance was monitored usingboth a viscous now porometer and a diffusion porometer. Resultswere confirmed with scanning electron microscopy. When exogenousABA solutions were supplied via petioles, 10–6 M solutionshad no effect on stomatal resistance. Upper (adaxial) stomatawere not affected by 10–5 M ABA but lower stomata showed3-fold more resistance after 2 h. Stomata of both surfaces closedafter 30 min in 10–4 M ABA. Isolated epidermal peels of lupin leaves were floated on ABAsolutions yet upper surface peels showed no stomatal closingin 10–4 M ABA, while lower surface stomata closed to abarely significant extent. Stomata of intact leaves were not very sensitive to darkness,showing at most a doubling in resistance after 6 h darkness.Complete stomatal closure, however, was readily produced bywilting leaves. Hence, lupin stomata are physically capableof closing. Endogenous ABA levels of water-stressed leaves increased approximately10-fold, which corresponds to concentrations below 10 µMABA. It is concluded that ABA is unlikely to play a role incontrolling short-term stomatal response of lupins.  相似文献

During a survey of meat and bone meals, fish meals and poultry feeds salmonellae were found only in samples of meat and bone meal, for which 19% were Salmonella -positive. MPN estimations on 2 meat and bone meal samples gave figures of 6 and 39 salmonellae/ 100 g, respectively. Sampling of poultry feed before and after pelleting showed that this process gave up to 1000-fold reduction in numbers of Enterobacteriaceae depending on the type of processing involved.  相似文献

Photosynthesis by White Clover Leaves in Mixed Clover/Ryegrass Swards   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Measurements of rates of net photosynthesis were made on singleBlanca white clover leaves on plants taken from a field-grown,mixed clover/perennial ryegrass sward during two regrowth periods. Net photosynthesis fell by 20 per cent in the first measurementperiod as leaf area index increased and the grass componentof the crop flowered, but did not change significantly in thesecond measurement period during which the grass remained vegetative. Leaves which had been artificially protected from shading inthe sward did not have significantly different photosyntheticcapacities from leaves in the undisturbed sward, even in thefirst measurement period. As leaf area index and sward height increased, successive cloverpetioles were longer, keeping the newly expanded leaves nearthe top of the sward where they received full light. It is suggestedthat it is this which allows successive clover leaves, unlikethose of vegetative grasses, to attain a high photosyntheticcapacity throughout a growth period. Endo-polygalacturonase produced by Botrytis cinerea is rapidly inactivated in infected strawberry tissue both by the naturally occurring fruit phenolics and also by those oxidised compounds formed as a result of polyphenol oxidase activity in the infected tissue. In contrast, the endo-polygalacturonases of Mucor piriformis, Rhizopus sexualis and R. stolonifer are more resistant to inactivation by the fruit phenolics and no polyphenol oxidase was detected in tissue infected by these fungi. The presence of Botrytis-infected berries in sulphited fruit containing tissue infected with Mucor or Rhizopus resulted in more rapid inactivation of the endopolygalacturonases from the latter fungi, and hence reduced the amount of softening and breakdown of the fruit. This inactivation is considered to be due largely to the oxidised phenolics present in Botrytis-infected tissue.  相似文献

Two classic ethnographies, Hortense Powdermaker's After Freedom: A Cultural Study in the Deep South and John Dollard's Caste and Class in a Southern Town , contributed to a "master narrative" of the Mississippi Delta and the South that viewed class largely through the lens of race. Their work contributed to the community studies and culture and personality traditions and became part of the public discourse of race in the United States. This article examines the institutional and theoretical frameworks within which they worked. We focus on three aspects of their work: (1) their definition of class that left race as the only salient social divide; (2) their portrayal of middle- and upper-class statements as normative; and (3) their uncritical use of data from elsewhere in the South to interpret their Indianola data. We report the events at the Yale Institute of Human Relations that led Dollard to publish before Powdermaker.  相似文献

Megafossil evidence does not fill the 'evolutionary gap' between land plants and their hypothetical green algal ancestors. Rare Late Silurian vascular plant megafossils provide little information about the morphological, physiological, biochemical, and ecological steps that preceded their evolution. Dissociated trilete spores, spore tetrads, cuticle- and tracheid-like structures far exceed the abundance and diversity of Silurian vascular plant megafossils, and appear millions of years before them. In reference to whole-bodied organisms, these or analogous structures belong to land plants or emergent aquatics; they may represent plants evolutionarily intermediate between green algae and descendent vascular plants at the bryophyte or pre-bryophyte stages. Changes in the cellular biochemistry of pre-Devonian land plants in response to the selective pressures of terrestrial life may have led to the origin of lignin and cutin, neither of which has any counterpart among the algae, and to the evolutionary surge of the vascular plants in the Early Devonian represented by the plant megafossil record. Positive correlation between abundance and diversity of trilete spores and shallow-water, nearshore sites reinforces conclusions based on morphology that a terrestrial flora existed well prior to the appearance of vascular plant megafossils.  相似文献
