The bolyeriid snakes Casarea dussumieri and Bolyeria multocarinata are unique among vertebrates in possessing an intramaxillary joint that separates the maxilla into anterior and posterior segments. In contrast to previous studies, which suggest that this joint permits enhanced elevation of the anterior maxillary teeth, our films of live Casarea show that the snout and anterior maxillary teeth are actively depressed 15° 20° below rest position through bilateral retraction of the palatomaxillary arches. Patterns of bone movement in living Casarea support the hypothesis that a caudally directed force is transmitted to the snout via the medial bones of the palatomaxillary arch, suggesting functional affinities between Casarea and higher henophidians.
The intramaxillary joint, in conjunction with the curvature of the mandibles, allows the jaws of Casarea to encircle hard, cylindrical prey held transversely in the mouth. Because the Mauritian terrestrial vertebrate fauna lacks mammals and is dominated by skinks and geckos, which Casarea is known to consume, we suggest that the intramaxillary joint functions in a manner analogous to that achieved by quite different maxillary modifications in colubrid scincivores. Although the origin of the bolyeriid intramaxillary joint remains unclear, its structural refinement and evolutionary stability may be due to selection pressures arising from limited prey diversity.  相似文献

  • 1 The geographical distributions of three species of jumping plant lice (psyllids) along an altitudinal transect (988–1300 m a.s.l.) in southern Norway were restricted within the range of their host plant Salix lapponum. One species, Cacopsylla propinqua, occurred at all sampling locations between 988 and 1222 m, whereas C.palmeni was confined to higher altitudes (1153–1222 m) and C.brunneipennis was more abundant at lower altitudes (988–1101 m).
  • 2 C.brunneipennis and C.palmeni developed only on female catkins. Development times of catkins and psyllids were similar (approximately 50 days) and successful psyllid development depended on close phenological synchrony with catkins.
  • 3 Thermal requirements for development of female catkins were greater at low altitude (988 m) compared with higher altitude (1222 m), showing local adaptation of S.lapponum to altitude. In general, thermal requirements of psyllids were less than those of catkins at the same location. C.brunneipennis had higher thermal requirements than C.palmeni.
  • 4 Field experiments, using polythene enclosures to elevate temperatures at two sites at different altitudes (by 0.6–1.4 deg. C), showed that insects had an enhanced relative rate of development under elevated temperatures compared with their host plants.
  • 5 Indices of phenological synchrony were calculated from thermal requirements of psyllids and catkins. Under elevated temperatures, phenological synchrony decreased at both sites. This resulted in the subsequent development of smaller adult insects at low altitude, although at higher altitude, insects developing under elevated temperatures were larger and had a higher survival rate compared with controls.
  • 6 Effects of temperature on phenological synchrony may explain the limits to the geographical range of psyllids. The consequences of climate change on psyllid populations will depend on the effects of decreased phenological synchrony on insect development and this may differ within the insect's geographical range.

Organic requirements for attachment to glass, elongation, and motility of Entamoeba histolytica, have been determined. the trophozoite, which has been grown axenically only in highly complex media with reduced oxygen tensions, remains rounded and detached when placed in a Tris-HCl buffered solution containing NaCI, KCI, MgCI2, and CaCI2. A maintenance medium in which the amebae could attach to glass, elongate, and remain motile and viable for 12 to 24 h was devised with the addition of cysteine, ascorbic acid, bovine serum albumin, and the vitamin solution of medium NCTC #107. Tris-HCI was the most effective buffer tested and the optimal pH was 6.9 to 7.0. Survival, but not attachment, of the amebae was decreased at osmolalities ranging between 110 and 180 milliosmoles/kg, whereas both functions were decreased above ~260 milliosmoles/kg. Bovine serum albumin, the most effective of the proteins tested, and the vitamin solution helped maintain attachment of some ameba strains, but were not required by other strains. the requirements for cysteine and ascorbic acid were absolute and highly specific. During incubation in the maintenance medium, cell volumes decreased. Sensitivity of the organisms to agglutination by concanavalin A, wheat germ agglutinin, soybean agglutinin and fucose binding protein remained unchanged.  相似文献

Abstract. Regulation of the concentration of osmotic solutes was studied in Chlorella emersonii grown at external osmotic pressures (II) ranging between 0.08 and 1.64MPa. NaCl was used as osmoticum. The total solute content of the cells was manipulated by applying 2 mol m−3 3- O -methylglucose (MG), which was not metabolized, and accumulated at concentrations ranging between 60 and 230 mol m−3 within 4 h after its addition to the medium. Methylglucose uptake resulted in decreases in concentrations of proline and sucrose, the two solutes mainly responsible for osmotic adaptation of C. emersonii to high external II. The responses were consistent with the hypothesis that proline and sucrose concentrations are controlled by a system of osmotic regulation, with turgor and/or volume as a primary signal. Short-term experiments showed that even very small increases in turgor and/or volume, due to accumulation of methylglucose, resulted in large decreases in proline and sucrose. Over the first 30-60 min the total solute concentration in the cells increased by at most 15 osmol m−3 which would represent an increase in turgor pressure of at most 0.04 M Pa. Yet, the decreases in proline and sucrose were as fast as those in cells exposed to a sudden decrease of 0.25 MPa in external II, when the turgor pressure would have increased by at least 0.15 MPa. High concentrations of methylglucose in cells grown at high II did not affect the rapid synthesis of proline and sucrose which started when the cells were transferred to yet higher II. Thus, methylglucose had no direct effects on proline and sucrose metabolism, and it has been assumed that it acted solely as an inert osmotic solute within the cell.  相似文献

1. Effective management of aquatic fauna requires knowledge of the ways in which populations in different catchments and sub‐catchments are connected. A powerful way to estimate this is using genetic markers, which provide information on the average amount of genetic connectivity among populations over generations. Although many studies of genetic connectivity have appeared in the literature, there are innumerable species that have not been studied. 2. This study explores whether it is possible to make broad generalisations about population connectivity, based on readily available information in the form of species life history and architecture of the aquatic habitat. 3. A number of models have been proposed to explain the pattern of connectivity shown by aquatic species with different life‐history characteristics, for example, the stream hierarchy model, Isolation by Distance, the Death Valley Model, the headwater model and panmixia. 4. In this study, we propose a dichotomous key to assign species to different models of potential connectivity. The key is based on a few very simple questions about the life history of the species and the geographical arrangement of study sites. We then assessed the performance of the key with 109 data sets of Australian fish and macroinvertebrates, using genetic data to provide an estimate of realised connectivity. 5. The realised connectivity fitted the proposed potential connectivity model in over 70% of cases, and we suggest this might be a useful initial approach for managers where empirical data are lacking.  相似文献

We describe the development of 13 variable microsatellites developed to investigate population structure and dispersal in the sea urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii. This species is the dominant grazing herbivore in southeast Australian coastal waters and has the ability to modify benthic community structure. The microsatellites we identified showed a range of allele numbers (4–21) and expected heterozygosity (0.32–0.91) in two sampled populations. Contrary to previous findings in free‐spawning marine invertebrates, genotype proportions in neither population deviated significantly from Hardy–Weinberg expectations.  相似文献

Resolving the question of (1) land plant and (2) vascular land plant evolution is a complex problem. It requires a continued, multidisciplinary effort. We are all grateful to Dianne Edwards and her colleagues (Edwards et al. 1979) for pursuing one such line of research with careful attention to morphology and stratigraphy. Their efforts, however, are confined to one small part of the globe, and they perforce involve only one type of evidence effective with regard to questions of vascular plant evolution once the land estate has been reached. They do not deal with the basic question of vascular and non-vascular land plant origins. The so-called Přídolí benchmark that remained the sine qua nun for vascular plant evolution when Dianne Edwards began her studies has now been irrevocably breached. What other supposedly sacrosanct benchmarks will also crumble as the result of future discoveries, now that vascular plants have been recovered from lower Ludlovian strata? Nevertheless, pre-Devonian plant megafossils are too rare to yield definitive results with regard to the origin of land plants prior to the vascular estate, even though they could in principle (as emphasized by Edwards et al. 1979) provide the least ambiguous evidence. We must look elsewhere than to megafossils for evidence suggesting links in time between green algal ancestors, major groups of living green land Plants, and the many extinct groups of enigmatic higher land plants in the crucial Early Paleozoic time interval.  相似文献

1. The freshwater crayfish Cherax dispar (Decapoda: Parastacidae) inhabits coastal regions and islands of South East Queensland, Australia. We hypothesised that populations of C. dispar on different islands would be more genetically divergent from each other than populations from different drainages within the same island or on the mainland. 2. Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses were conducted on two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome oxidase subunit I & 16S ribosomal DNA) and one nuclear gene (Internal Transcribed Spacer region 2). Phylogeographic patterns were compared with those for other freshwater organisms in the area. 3. Deep genetic divergences were found within C. dispar, including four highly divergent (up to 20%) clades. The geographic distribution of each of the clades revealed strong latitudinal structuring along the coast rather than structuring among the islands. The high genetic divergence observed among the C. dispar clades was estimated to have pre‐dated island formation and may represent ancient river drainage patterns. 4. A restricted distribution was observed for the most divergent clade, which was discovered only on two of the sand islands (North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Island). Furthermore, strong phylogeographic structuring was observed within this clade on North Stradbroke Island, where no haplotypes were shared between samples from opposite sides of the island. This low connectivity within the island supports the idea that C. dispar rarely disperse terrestrially (i.e. across watersheds).  相似文献
