Previous work has shown that conifers growing on sites exposed to aerial pollution exhibit a different pattern of vegetative development in comparison with those on unpolluted sites, and have higher needle cytokinin contents (von Schwartzenberg & Hahn, Journal of Plant Physiology 139, 218–223, 1991). Physiologically mature Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis[Bong.] Carr) trees growing in a commercial plantation were sprayed with combinations of S, N and acidity from bud burst until December, for a 3 year period, in order to factor out the effects of individual pollutants and identify the specific component responsible for the high cytokinin content. Cytokinins were monitored using high‐performance liquid chromatography/enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay techniques. After 3 years of treatment only needles of neutral N‐treated trees contained significantly higher levels of cytokinin than those of trees receiving no spray. The addition of acid S could suppress the effects of added N. Needles from neutral N treatments also contained significantly higher levels of biologically active cytokinins and forms that can be transported in the xylem/phloem. Significantly lower levels of active cytokinins were present in needles sprayed with N in combination with acid sulphate. The results demonstrate that the needle cytokinin content may be used as a sensitive and selective bioindicator of the early stages in N perturbation in coniferous trees.  相似文献

1. Nucleotide sequences of a 280 base pair region of the cytochrome b gene were used to assess genetic diversity and to infer population histories in the New Zealand mayfly Acanthophlebia cruentata. 2. A hierarchial examination of populations from 19 streams at different spatial scales in the central and northern North Island of New Zealand found 34 haplotypes. A common haplotype was found in all central region streams and unique haplotypes in northern streams. Several central streams had region specific haplotypes with genetically differentiated populations at the 70–100 km scale. 3. Haplotype diversity was high (0.53–0.8) at most sites, but low (0–0.22) in some central sites. amova analyses found significant genetic diversity among regions (69%) and among catchments (58%). Most population pairwise FST tests were significant, with non‐significant pairwise tests among sites in the central region and pairs of sites between neighbouring streams. 4. The levels of sequence divergence are interpreted as the result of Pleistocene divergence in multiple refugia, leading to the evolution of regionally unique haplotypes. The low diversity in some central region populations may result from recent colonisation following local extinctions, associated with volcanic events.  相似文献

Seeds of the crisp lettuce cultivar Pennlake were germinated using all combinations of six ‘initial’ solutions of polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG) with osmotic potentials ranging from 0 to -8 bars and seven ‘secondary’ solutions of PEG with osmotic potentials ranging from 0 to -10 bars, to which seeds were moved after 24 or 48 h in the ‘initial’ solution. The number of seeds germinating decreased at more negative osmotic potentials of both ‘initial’ and ‘secondary’ solutions but there was an interaction between germination temperature and the osmotic potential of the ‘initial’ solution. At an ‘initial’ solution osmotic potential of 0 bars germination at 20°C exceeded that at 10°C. As the osmotic potential of the ‘initial’ solution decreased germination at 20°C decreased more than at 10°C so that at the more negative osmotic potentials germination at 10°C exceeded that at 20°C. However seeds ungerminated after 14 days germinated normally when transferred back to water, so that the average final germination was 99.5%. The results suggest that major fluctuations in soil water potential in a seedbed are unlikely to influence seed germination per se provided that a period of 24 to 48 h at 0 bars tension is available at some time. The timing of such a period relative to sowing will have a considerable effect on the time of germination and hence the time of emergence. It is concluded that factors other than the direct effect of soil moisture content on germination are involved in reducing seedling emergence under fluctuating soil moisture conditions in the field.  相似文献

Estimates of the energy budgets of nonbreeding waders (Charadrii) have frequently been hampered by ignorance of the birds' nocturnal activities. During the premigratory period (March), Grey Plovers Pluvialis squatarola and Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus at the Zwartkops estuary, South Africa, foraged throughout the nocturnal as well as the diurnal low-tide period. Although both species continued to forage visually at night, they exhibited behavioural changes to compensate for the reduced visibility. Both species foraged more slowly at night, taking fewer steps per minute, and Grey Plovers paused for longer to search for prey. Prey items were sighted from shorter distances at night than during the day. Energy intake rates, however, did not differ significantly by day and night for either species, and both achieved over 40% of their daily low-tide period intake at night. The energy intake rates and total daily intake of Grey Plovers, which fed exclusively on the study area, exceeded allometrically predicted values.  相似文献
