The vast majority of bird species build a nest in which to breed. Some species build more than one nest, but the function of most multiple nest-building remains unclear. Here we describe the unusual nest-building behaviour of the Australian Reed Warbler Acrocephalus australis , and test experimentally the hypotheses that multiple nest-building is related to individual condition or territory quality, and plays a role in mate assessment. Australian Reed Warblers built two types of nest structures: 'type I' nests, which were used for eggs and nestlings, and 'type II' nests, which were structurally distinct from type I nests, did not support eggs, nestlings or adults and were not essential for successful breeding. The number of type II nests built in each territory varied. Type II nests were only built before breeding had commenced in a territory and females were not observed participating in their construction, supporting a role in female mate choice. Birds provided with supplementary food built significantly more type II nests than control birds. However, supplementary-fed birds did not have greater pairing success, and the addition of further type II nests to territories did not increase the pairing rate or type II nest construction in those territories. There was no relationship between the presence of type II nests and either reproductive success or likelihood of nest predation. We discuss the implications of these results in light of previous suggestions regarding the function of multiple nest-building in birds. 相似文献

R. padi gynoparae settling in the canopy of the winter host, Prunus padus, tended to form aggregations. Differences in the degree of exposure to wind, sun, etc., did not satisfactorily explain the aggregated pattern observed. In laboratory experiments, aphids did not distinguish between leaves taken from nearby aggregations and leaves taken far away from aggregations. The results of laboratory olfactometer tests and field trapping studies indicate that R. padi gynoparae produce an aggregation pheromone. Ephelides and solar lentigines are benign pigmented spots, which are currently associated with an increased risk of skin cancer. These two pigmented spots are known to be discriminated by their clinical, histological, and electron microscopic characteristics, even though occasional misclassification can occur because of their similarity. It has also been questioned whether these spots are not one and the same. In this study, we have attempted to differentiate between these two pigmented spots with the use of a standardized protocol for clinical examinations on 272 healthy volunteers, paying particular consideration to their pigmentary and constitutional host factors. We found that solar lentigines 1) are more prevalent than ephelides, 2) increase in prevalence and number with higher age, and 3) are most prevalent on the trunk and occur more frequently in males than in females. A trend is also observed whereby ephelides 1) loose their prevalence with age, 2) become equally distributed on the face, arms, and trunk, and 3) occur more frequently in females. An intimate association of ephelides, but not solar lentigines, has been found with hair color and skin type. All of these findings are in agreement with most of those reported in the literature, supporting the view that ephelides and solar lentigines are different types of pigmented lesions. 相似文献

Populations of water-beetles (Hydrophiloidea) were studied during the ice-free seasons of 2 years at a lake shore near Stockholm, Sweden. They were sampled by means of an absolute quantitative method (twenty-four bottom cores/sample), extracted by Berlese-Tullgren funnels, and a relative searching method (time-catch or catch per unit effort). The sampling efficiency was tested by charging empty samples with known numbers of beetles. ‘Smaller’ species were less efficiently extracted than ‘larger’ ones. Absolute and relative population estimates of eight species were compared by means of regression analysis, the relative estimate being considered as the dependent variable. Only three statistically significant correlations were found, but a correlation always seemed to exist, and the relative estimates are considered as crude estimates. To obtain better ones when studying several species in one habitat much work is required, and then the advantages of the simple relative method disappears. The different sizes of the species were evaluated as sources of errors affecting the relative estimates. The estimates of the 'smaller’ species were more affected than the ‘larger’ ones. It is considered that relative population estimates would gain much if compared with independent absolute estimates. This seems to have been done rarely with invertebrates in aquatic habitats. Further, it is thought that behavioural extraction methods might be applied to several aquatic animal groups in eulittorals and littorals, saving much time compared with mechanical methods or hand sorting. 相似文献
