According to the global latitudinal diversity gradient, a decrease in animal and plant species richness exists from the tropics towards higher latitudes. The aim of this study was to describe the latitudinal distribution patterns of Chilean continental flora and delineate biogeographic regions along a 4270‐km north–south gradient. We reviewed plant lists for each of the 39 parallels of continental Chile to build a database of the geographical distribution of vascular plant species comprising 184 families, 957 genera and 3787 species, which corresponded to 100%, 94.9% and 74.2% of the richness previously defined for Chile, respectively. Using this latitudinal presence–absence species matrix, we identified areas with high plant richness and endemism and performed a Cluster analysis using Jaccard index to delineate biogeographic regions. This study found that richness at family, genus and species levels follow a unimodal 4270‐km latitudinal distribution curve, with a concentration of richness in central Chile (31–42°S). The 37th parallel south (central Chile) presented the highest richness for all taxonomic levels and in specific zones the endemism (22–37°S) was especially high. This unimodal pattern contrasts the global latitudinal diversity gradient shown by other studies in the Northern hemisphere. Seven floristic regions were identified in this latitudinal gradient: tropical (18–22°S), north Mediterranean (23–28°S), central Mediterranean (29–32°S), south Mediterranean (33–37°S), north temperate (38–42°S), south temperate (43–52°S) and Austral (53–56°S). This regionalization coincides with previous bioclimatic classifications and illustrates the high heterogeneity of the biodiversity in Chile and the need for a reconsideration of governmental conservation strategies to protect this diversity throughout Chile. 相似文献

Overarching trends can be seen in European mammalian phylogeography, yet it is clear that species responded differently depending on adaptations to past environments. We built upon previous work on the phylogeography of weasels (Mustela nivalis) in Europe by using well‐preserved museum specimens from a proposed phylogeographic suture zone. The complete cytochrome b gene was amplified from 49 individuals from present‐day Poland and analyzed with previously published data on a European scale to identify glacial refugia and infer recolonization processes. Bayesian coalescent analysis revealed the importance of the Last Glacial Maximum and the Younger Dryas in the diversification of, and demographic changes in, identified mitochondrial lineages. Our analysis, in conjunction with the available fossil data, strongly points to a Carpathian origin for one of the lineages, and further highlights the importance of this region as a refugium for European mammals. Mustela nivalis originating from this refugium appear to have a selective advantage over M. nivalis from other lineages in certain environments in the suture zone in central Europe, with climate clearly influencing the distribution of mitochondrial DNA lineages. Abstract: A review on the Oligocene and Miocene stalked barnacles of the Paratethys Sea is presented. The fauna comprises two lepadiform and eight scalpelliform species. Only two species are known from Oligocene deposits, four are documented from Lower Miocene formations, and another four species occur in the Middle Miocene. Only one Oligocene and one Miocene species occur in two different Paratethyan basins in roughly coeval environments, and only a single Middle Miocene species is also known from the adjacent Mediterranean Sea. This low degree of biogeographical similarity is probably a result from the still low number of publications dealing with this group. Stalked barnacles are often indicating bathyal or at least deep sublittoral environments. Especially, the abundance of the benthic deep‐water lepadiform Poecilasma in evaporitic deposits of the Middle Miocene Badenian Salinity Crisis may serve as new evidence for a deeper marine depositional environment. Scalpellum paratethyianum sp. nov. and Lepas sattmanni sp. nov. are described as new species; Arcoscalpellum renevieri (Mayer and Gümbel in Gümbel, 1861) is introduced as new combination. 相似文献

The thermosensitivity of developing embryos of the fresh water snail Lymnaea stagnalis was investigated from the 4-cell stage to the 3-day-old trochophore larva by means of survival curves for 43.6°C. Cleavage stage embryos were extremely thermoresistant as compared with older stages, and thermosensitivity increases during the development.
Pretreatment with a mild heat exposure (10 min at 39°C) did not induce thermotolerance at the 4-cell stage, but it did so in the early gastrula and trochophora. Development of thermotolerance in 1-, 2-, and 3-day-old stages showed an identical kinetic pattern.
After incubation in35 S-methionine one-dimensional gel electrophoresis was carried out with or without preheating. At the 4-cell stage no enhanced synthesis of heat shock proteins was induced by exposure to heat. At stages of 1 day and older heat induced the enhanced synthesis of the heat shock proteins with apparent molecular weights of 38, 65 and 70 kilodaltons. Clutches of ground‐nesting farmland birds are often destroyed by farming operations, resulting in insufficient reproductive success and subsequently declining populations. The aim of this study was to investigate whether volunteer nest protection can enhance nest success of ground‐nesting birds. The study compared nest success of protected and unprotected Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus nests over 2 years on arable farms in the Netherlands. Because of different crop management, nest success of ground‐breeding birds might differ between organic and conventional arable farms. The effectiveness of volunteer nest protection was therefore investigated on both farm types. Although nest protection significantly reduced nest loss due to farming operations, there were no significant differences in total clutch survival of protected and unprotected nests. However, sample sizes of unprotected nests, and protected nests on organic farms, were relatively small, which may have reduced statistical power. There were indications that protected nests were predated or deserted more often. We recommend exploring different ways to improve the effectiveness of volunteer nest protection through a further reduction of nest loss due to farming operations and predation. 相似文献
