Cold‐adapted species are thought to have had their largest distribution ranges in central Europe during the glacial periods. Postglacial warming caused severe range shifts of such taxa into higher latitudes and altitudes. We selected the boreomontane butterfly Lycaena helle (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) as an example to demonstrate the genetic effects of range changes, and to document the recent status of highly fragmented remnant populations. We analysed five polymorphic microsatellite loci in 1059 individuals sampled at 50 different localities scattered over the European distribution area of the species. Genetic differentiation was strong among the mountain ranges of western Europe, but we did not detect similarly distinct genetic groups following a geographical pattern in the more eastern areas. The Fennoscandian populations form a separate genetic group, and provide evidence for a colonization from southern Finland via northern Scandinavia to south‐central Sweden. Species distribution modelling suggests a large extension of the spatial distribution during the last glacial maximum, but highlights strong retractions to a few mountain areas under current conditions. These findings, combined with our genetic data, suggest a more or less continuous distribution of L. helle throughout central Europe at the end of the last ice age. As a consequence of postglacial warming, the species retreated northwards to Fennoscandia and escaped increasing temperatures through altitudinal shifts. Therefore, the species is today restricted to population remnants located at the mountain tops of western Europe, genetically isolated from each other, and evolved into genetically unique entities. The overall pattern of morphological variation and genetic diversity (allozyme analysis) was studied in the Hieracium nigrescens group (H. nigrescens s.l., H. alpinumH. murorum) in the Sudety Mountains and the Western Carpathians. A morphological analysis was performed on 180 plants from 12 populations belonging to six a priori distinguished taxa. Altogether, 25 characters were measured or scored. Morphometric (canonical discriminant analysis) data separated five taxa, evaluated here at the species rank: H. chrysostyloides, H. decipiens, H. nigrescens (all from the Sudety Mountains), H. jarzabczynum, and H. vapenicanum (the Western Carpathians). A distinct local population from Mount Babia hora (the Western Carpathians) comprised a further possible taxon, given the preliminary name ‘H. babiagorense’. Genetic diversity was studied in 17 populations of H. chrysostyloides, H. decipiens, H. jarzabczynum, H. nigrescens, H. vapenicanum and ‘H. babiagorense’ using five enzyme systems. All a priori recognized species were proved to be genetically homogeneous, each consisting of one unique multilocus allozyme genotype, except ‘H. babiagorense’ which shared the same genotype with H. jarzabczynum. For the first time, a chromosome number is reported for H. vapenicanum (2n = 3x = 27) and previously published numbers were confirmed for H. chrysostyloides (2n = 5x = 45), H. decipiens (2n = 4x = 36), H. jarzabczynum (2n = 4x = 36), H. koprovanum (2n = 4x = 36), and H. nigrescens (2n = 4x = 36). All species have been shown to be endemic to either the Sudety Mountains or the Western Carpathians. Except for the species studied, two further ones (H. apiculatum, H. nivimontis) are recognized in the area, giving a total of seven species from the Hieracium nigrescens group in the area studied. The morphologically slightly different local population from Mount Babia hora/Babia Góra (‘H. babiagorense’) requires further study. Adult life spans of insects are part of supposedly adaptive life-history syndromes, which involve a variety of reproductive strategies with regard to mating, egg maturation and egg laying. Contingencies of life span with many other morphological, behavioural, and ecological traits are to be expected. We used a data-mining approach, incorporating controls for phylogeny, to uncover broad patterns of trait contingencies in a literature-derived data set of adult life spans for 350 butterfly species. We found that adult feeding habit has strong links with life spans, with pollen-feeders living longer than fruit feeders, which in turn live longer than nectar feeders. Furthermore, traits reducing susceptibility to predators (i.e. aposematism, eye-spots) are associated with longer life. Mud-puddling behaviour as a means of gaining access to minerals, and possibly nitrogen, was generally associated with a short life. We also found strong impacts of the region of occurrence of species (i.e. whether they were tropical or temperate taxa), but received conflicting results depending on whether we analysed field data (longer life in the tropics) or data from caged individuals (shorter life in the tropics). Adult longevity was associated with the growth form of larval host plants (higher on lianas as opposed to herbs, shrubs, or trees), whereas other larval host plant traits did not have strong links with species' life spans. 1. Although macrophytes play a key role in the structure and functioning of lowland rivers, most of the basic plant, hydrodynamic and sediment‐water interactions have only been described qualitatively. We therefore studied quantitatively, the seasonal dynamics of matter deposition and mobilisation inside and outside (free path) a representative patch of arrowhead, Sagittaria sagittifolia, in the lowland River Spree, NE Germany, in August 2006. Our in situ study combined resuspension experiments, a hydrodynamically calibrated erosion chamber and concurrent measurements of the prevailing flow characteristics and bed load. 2. Increasing entrainment rates (E) of particles (ESPM) and total P (ETP), with increments of shear velocity (U*) from 0.53 to 2.42 cm s?1, were significantly higher inside the plant patch than outside. Indeed, ESPM and ETP at the lowest U* were 8‐ and 12‐fold higher inside than outside the patch, reflecting the resuspension potential of the upper nutrient‐enriched layer and the extent of pulsed P inputs even at small increases in U*. 3. Vertical distribution of velocity (u) revealed a flow pattern of a mixing layer inside the S. sagittifolia patch, and that of a boundary layer in the free path. The highest gradient of u in the mixing layer was located in the water column at about 0.5 m depth, whereas the highest gradient of u for the boundary layer was found near the riverbed. The maximum of U* (1.65 cm s?1) was only 4 mm above the sediment. 4. A plant mosaic provides a low‐energetic environment promoting extensive particle trapping and the accumulation of a fine‐grained, nutrient‐enriched sediment, and forming a large resuspension potential. Consequently, after plant decay and the concomitant increase of U* this material is preferentially entrained at higher rates. Hence, the key role of submerged macrophytes in lowland rivers is more directly related to modifying the dynamic equilibria between vegetation trapping and resuspension, than to the retention of nutrients, particularly P, and the reduction of P loads downstream to other waters.  相似文献

Since 1991, a large-scale satellite tracking study of White Stork Ciconia ciconia has followed 75 individuals along the eastern migration route, which passes across Israel into eastern Africa. Twenty-six of these birds travelled at least as far as the Sudan. Fifteen (58%) did not migrate to the eastern Sudan — the primary winter quarters in Africa suggested by ring recoveries — but flew to western Sudan and Chad and in one case even through Cameroon and into Nigeria. The significance of this new, important staging region for White Storks should be investigated urgently to establish the areas that are ecologically valuable for the conservation of this species.  相似文献

The morphogenesis of the crocodilian and avian columella auris is analysed, using Alligator and Struthio as models that are studied in detail, and Crocodylus, Gallus, and Coturnix as models for comparative purposes. This investigation was undertaken to address controversies emanating from previous studies concerning the identity of archosaurian hyal elements, and to clarify confounding nomenclature that has been used for both topographic and phylogenetic purposes. We found that confusion in the identification of the reptilian and avian hyoid arch derivatives is attributable to: (1) redundant and/or inconsistently applied topographical terminology; (2) mixing of topographical and phylogenetic terminology; (3) interpretation in a recapitulatory framework; and (4) failure to consider that developmental pathways of recent archosaurians (reptilians and birds) might be divergently modified. Our analysis identifies errors in previous interpretations, misinterpretations of prior work, and histological observations that have been idealized. The most controversial issues are addressed – the derivation of the supracolumellar process; the concept of the laterohyal component; and segmentation of the distal part of the reptilian and avian columella auris. Based on new data, we suggest that the osteichthyan infrapharyngohyal, suprapharyngohyal, epihyal, and ceratohyal are not applicable terms for reptilian and avian columellar components from a phylogenetic perspective, and should not be used as topographical terms either. We further propose that the original morphogenetic program of the hyoid arch has been overwritten in newly derived evolutionary pathways of crocodilians and birds, in which a new functional and morphological patterning of the hyoid arch, as a specific sound‐transmitting apparatus, have evolved. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 156 , 384–410.  相似文献

Fusarium wilt, caused by the fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense ( Foc ), is one of the most destructive diseases of bananas. In the tropics and subtropics, Cavendish banana varieties are highly susceptible to Foc race 4 (VCG 0120). Cavendish selection GCTCV-218 was shown to have significantly lower disease severity and incidence compared with susceptible cultivar Williams in replicated greenhouse and field trials. Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was previously carried out to identify genes induced in roots of GCTCV-218, but not in Williams, after infection with Foc 'subtropical' race 4 . Seventy-nine SSH clones were sequenced and revealed 13 non-redundant gene fragments, several of which showed homology to defence-associated genes, including cell wall-strengthening genes. Quantitative RT-PCR was used to confirm up-regulation and differential expression of a number of genes throughout a time-course, following Foc infection in the tolerant GCTCV-218 when compared with susceptible cv. Williams . Tolerance of GCTCV-218 was linked to significantly increased induction of cell wall-associated phenolic compounds.  相似文献
