The number of people suffering from dementia will rise considerably in the years to come. This will have important implications for society. People suffering from dementia have to rely on relatives and professional caregivers when their disorder progresses. Some people want to determine for themselves their moment of death, if they should become demented. They think that the decline in personality caused by severe dementia is shocking and unacceptable. In this context, some people consider euthanasia as a way to avoid total deterioration. In this article, we discuss some practical and ethical dilemmas regarding euthanasia in persons with severe dementia based on an advance euthanasia directive. We are using a personalist approach in dealing with these ethical dilemmas.  相似文献

ABSTRACT To investigate the role of black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) as predators, we studied diet, prey selection, and predation impact of jackals on 2 game ranches in South Africa that differed in ungulate diversity and biomass. Results showed that large (>15 kg) ungulate species dominated jackal diets throughout the year on both the less diverse (range of ingested biomass across seasons = 39–78%) and more diverse (26–69%) game ranch. Other important food items included medium-sized mammals (1–3 kg; 1–26%) and fruit (2–69%), whereas small mammals comprised 3–11% of ingested biomass across seasons on both sites. Jackals were not random in consumption of ungulates, and consumption patterns suggested jackals actively hunted certain species rather than consumed them as carrion. During ungulate birthing periods, jackals consumed almost exclusively those ungulate species that were hiders (i.e., fawns were hidden in tall vegetation away from herd) regardless of ungulate densities, suggesting that primarily fawns were preyed upon. Among hiders, there was a negative relationship (P = 0.01) between body size and percent of population consumed by jackals, indicating smaller species were more susceptible than larger species to jackal predation. Consequently, springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) were always selected over other ungulate species on both sites, and this species was the most impacted by jackal predation. In contrast, ungulate species that were followers (i.e., fawns immediately followed mothers within protection of the herd) were scarcely or not at all consumed by jackals, regardless of body size or density. Medium-sized mammals were selectively consumed over ungulates, and there was a negative relationship (P < 0.01) between consumption of berries and ungulates, indicating alternative food resources influenced consumption of ungulates on our study sites. Our results will help wildlife managers in Africa identify ungulate species susceptible to jackal predation, and can be used to develop management strategies for reducing jackal predation in areas where it is problematic.  相似文献

1. Eggs of Crocodilia and Chelonia, like those of birds, have a pair of egg membranes separating a thick layer of albumen from the calcareous shell. In contrast, eggs of oviparous Lepidosauria have only a single shell membrane, upon which relatively small amounts of calcium carbonate are deposited; and the volume of albumen in eggs is extraordinarily small at the time of oviposition. 2. With the possible exception of certain geckos and some chelonians, eggs of oviparous reptiles seem always to absorb water from the substrate during the course of normal incubation. In so far as the rate of water absorption exceeds the rate of water loss by transpiration from exposed surfaces, the eggs swell during incubation. The term ‘cleidoic’ cannot be used to describe eggs of this type. 3. Embryos of lizards and snakes influence the water potential of extra-embryonic fluids contained within their eggs, thereby maintaining or increasing the gradient in water potential that drives water absorption. 4. Embryos of Crocodilia and Chelonia obtain a substantial portion of the calcium used in ossification of skeletal elements from the inner surfaces of the eggshell. In contrast, embryonic lizards and snakes draw upon extensive reserves of calcium present in the yolk, and obtain little (if any) calcium from the eggshell. 5. All reptilian embryos seem to produce substantial quantities of urea as a detoxification product of protein catabolism. Contrary to expectation, uricotelism may not be common among reptilian embryos, even in those few instances where development takes place within a hard, calcareous egg. 6. In eggs of Crocodilia and Chelonia, respiratory gases seem to pass by diffusion through pores in the calcareous eggshell and through spaces between the fibres of the pair of egg membranes. No pores have been observed in the shell of lepidosaurian eggs, and so gases presumably diffuse between the fibres of the single (multilayered) shell membrane. 7. Metabolism of reptilian embryos is temperature-dependent, as is true for most ectothermic organisms. For each species, there appears to be a particular temperature at which embryonic development proceeds optimally, and departures from this optimum elicit increases in developmental anomalies and/or embryonic mortality. 8. Viviparity has evolved on numerous occasions among species of the Squamata, but seemingly never among Crocodilia or Chelonia. Since the evolution of viviparity entails a progressive reduction in the eggshell, only those organisms whose embryos do not depend upon the eggshell as a source of calcium may have the evolutionary potential to become viviparous. 9. Evolutionary transitions from oviparity to viviparity could have been driven by selection related to (i) thermal benefits to embryos consequent upon retention of eggs within the body of a parent capable of behavioural thermoregulation; (ii) protection of the eggs from nest predators and/or soil microbes; and (iii) more effective exploitation of a seasonal food resource by early emerging young.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Stereotyped eclosion behaviour of Sarcophaga bullata Parker (Diptera, Sarcophagidae) consists of two different repetitive sequences of movements. One, which is instrumental for making forward progress in extricating the body from the puparium or for digging through the soil, is called the programme for forward movement (PFM). The other, which is performed as a response to an obstruction, is called the programme for obstruction removal (POR). The initial and final phases of each repetitive sequence are identical in both programmes, the sequences differing only in the middle portion. In the POR, the locomotor elements of the PFM sequence (peristalsis) are substituted by a train of repetitive expansions of the ptilinum, which are caused by simultaneous contractions of the abdominal and thoracic muscles. These ptilinal movements function as an air hammer against the obstruction. Switching from the PFM to POR can be experimentally induced by a rough mechanical stimulation of the head (squeezing, pushing against a barrier) but not by gentle tactile stimulation of the ptilinum or antennae. The critical period for induction of the POR is in the phase of the PFM sequence at which the two programmes diverge. A constant mechanical stimulus is necessary for a sustained performance of the whole POR. A hypothetical scheme of the neural basis of this behaviour is suggested.  相似文献

In many sexually reproducing species, females are sperm limited and actively mate more than once which can lead to sperm competition between males. However, the costs and benefits of multiple matings may differ for males and females leading to different optimal mating frequencies and consequent sexual conflict. Under these circumstances, male traits that reduce females' re‐mating rates are likely to evolve. However, the same traits can also reduce, directly or indirectly, female survival and/or manipulate female fecundity. Evidence of this sexual conflict is common across several taxa. Here, we examine the evidence for this form of conflict in the free‐living nematodes of the Caenorhabditis genus. Members of this group are extensively used to describe developmental and physiological processes. Despite this, we understand little about the evolution of selfing, maintenance of males and sexual conflict in these species, particularly those with gonochoristic mating strategies. In this study, we demonstrate experimentally sexual conflict in the gonochoristic of C. remanei cultured under laboratory conditions. In our first experiment, we found that female fecundity increased with the number of males present which suggests that females' reproduction may be sperm limited. However, increasing the number of males present also reduced female survival. A second experiment ruled out the alternative explanation of density‐dependent reduction in female survival when more males were present as increasing female density correspondingly did not affect female survival. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 362–369.  相似文献

1. In the current ecological classification of termites, four feeding groups (I–IV) are recognised, corresponding to a gradient of decomposition from sound wood to highly mineralised organic matter in the soil. 2. Nitrogen stable isotopes (hereafter δ15N) were used to place termites from French Guiana rainforests along a wood‐soil decomposition gradient, to test (i) whether feeding group assignation based on morphological characters was accurate and actually represented diet specialisation thresholds, and (ii) to what extent the dietary specialization of species is explained by phylogeny (phylogenetic autocorrelation). 3. δ15N values vary over a range of 13‰, suggesting that diet diversification contributes to the high species diversity in French Guiana. δ15N values span a similar interval in all Termitidae subfamilies. Ranges of different subfamilies broadly overlap, although each of them diversified preferentially on one side of the wood‐soil decomposition gradient. Congeneric species share similar feeding habits, whereas distant species tend to feed on distinct substrates. 4. Feeding groups did not completely match stable isotope data: there was no discontinuity between Groups III and IV, and no correlation between anatomical criteria used to distinguish these groups and δ15N values. Nor was there any consistent difference in δ15N values between wood feeders of the families Rhinotermitidae (Group I) and Termitidae (Group II). We also suggest that species feeding outside the wood‐soil gradient should be distinguished for their peculiar feeding requirements.  相似文献

We investigated how predator/prey body‐size ratio and prey colour pattern affected efficacy of prey warning signals. We used great and blue tits (Parus major and Cyanistes caeruleus), comprising closely related and ecologically similar bird species differing in body size, as experimental predators. Two larval instars and adults of the unpalatable red firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus), differing in body size and/or coloration, were used as prey. We showed that prey body size did not influence whether a predator attacked the prey or not during the first encounter. However, smaller prey were attacked, killed, and eaten more frequently in repetitive encounters. We assumed that body size influences the predator through the amount of repellent chemicals better than through the amount of optical warning signal. The larger predator attacked, killed and ate all forms of firebug more often than the smaller one. The difference between both predators was more pronounced in less protected forms of firebug (chemically as well as optically). Colour pattern also substantially affected the willingness of predators to attack the prey. Larval red–black coloration did not provide a full‐value warning signal, although a similarly conspicuous red‐black coloration of the adults reliably protected them. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 890–898.  相似文献
