1. The effect of benthivorous bream and carp on sediment resuspension and the concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll a were studied in sixteen experimental ponds (mean depth 1m, mean area 0.1 ha, sandy clay/clay sediment), stocked with bream or carp at densities varying from 0 to 500 kg ha?1. Planktivorous perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) were added to some ponds to suppress zooplankton. 2. Suspended sediment concentrations increased linearly with biomass of benthivorous fish. Bream caused an increase of 46 g sediment m?2 day?1 per 100kg bream ha?1 and a reduction of 0.38m?1 in reciprocal Secchi disc depth, corresponding to an increase in the extinction coefficient of 0.34m?1. 3. No relationship was found between size of fish and amount of resuspension, but the effect of bream was twice as great as that of carp. Benthivorous feeding was reduced in May because alternative food (zooplankton) was available. 4. Assuming a linear relationship, chlorophyll a level increased by 9.0 μgI?1, total P by 0.03mgl?1 and Kjeldahl-N by 0.48mgl?1 per 100kg bream ha?1. Silicate, chlorophyll a, total P and total N were all positively correlated with fish biomass, but orthophosphate showed no correlation.  相似文献

An example of the graptolite Monograptus turriculatus (Barrande, 1850) from the crispus Biozone (Silurian, Llandovery) of the Girvan district, Scotland, shows the first recorded instance of dissepiment formation in graptoloid graptolites. The dissepiments are formed by the fusion of thecal spines with the dorsal wall of the adjacent part of the succeeding whorl of this spiral graptolite. A modification of the phenol-sulphuric acid method to determinethe bulk of soluble or insoluble sugars in plant tissue is proposed.The method is based on optimizing the phenol concentration toobtain equal colour yields for glucose, fructose and sucrose.The optimal phenol concentration is found to depend on the ethanolconcentration of the measuring solution. Abstract. Summer mastitis is an acute suppurative bacterial infection of the udder in heifers and dry cows. To ascertain the possible role of flies in the transmission of the disease, experimental exposures of recipient heifers to Hydrotaea irritans previously exposed to bacteria were carried out. Flies were allowed to feed on secretions from clinical cases of summer mastitis. The pathogens present were the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Actinomyces pyogenes , Stuart-Schwan cocci, Peptococcus indolicus, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacterioides species. The teats of eight heifers were exposed to flies with verified pathogen content. Two teats of each animal were deliberately damaged before fly exposure. One teat was cut, another pricked with insect needles to mimic insect bites. Two of the heifers developed summer mastitis in the quarters where teats had been cut. The bacterial species isolated from these quarters corresponded to those that had previously been fed to the flies. For the first time, it is now demonstrated that H.irritans is capable of transmitting summer mastitis pathogens and so causing summer mastitis in recipient heifers. Lesions on the teat orifice may be a predisposing factor in the development of the disease.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Food web manipulation, by removal of planktivorous or benthivorous fish, is a promising method for reducing phytoplankton concentrations in shallow lakes. The part that nutrients may play in the success of such a measure is not well documented.
2. In this study, we analysed the flow of phosphorus through the food web of the shallow, eutrophic Lake Wolderwijd/Nuldernauw. Our studies occurred in the years 1981 (when a bloom of cyanobacteria occurred) and 1987 (no bloom); a hypothetical situation was also examined in which most of the bream are assumed to be removed.
3. The analysis shows that the success of biomanipulation is probably due not only to an increased grazing pressure on the phytoplankton, but also to a decreased availability of phosphorus. The reason for this is the removal of detrital phosphorus by increased sedimentation as a result of a predicted increase in growth of macrophytes after biomanipulation.  相似文献

DNA polymerases were purified several hundred-fold from the10 000 x g soluble (polymerase I) and particulate (polymeraseIII) fractions prepared from virus PBCV-1 infected ChlorellaNC64A extracts. Both DNA polymerases exhibited optimal activitywith activated calf thymus DNA at pH 8.5. DNA polymerase I required3.0 mol m–3 MgSO4 and 150 to 250 mol m–3 KCl foroptimum activity whereas, DNA polymerase III required 2.0 molm–3 MgSO4 and 150 mol m–3 KCl. Both enzymes wereinhibited by pyrophosphate, actinomycin D, ethidium bromide,dideoxythymidine triphosphate, and N-ethylmaleimide but wererelatively insensitive to aphidicolin. DNA polymerase I differedfrom DNA polymerase III in its response to cations (particularlyNH4Cl), elution from a DEAE cellulose column, and molecularweight. 1. Artificial mixing in the hypertrophic Lake Nieuwe Meer was successful in preventing blooms of the cyanobacterium Microcystis. During the 2 years of artificial, deep mixing the number of colonies of Microcystis per litre and also per m2 was lower than in the two preceding control years. Hardly any nuisance scums of Microcystis occurred in the lake.
2. The phytoplankton shifted from a cyanobacteria-dominated community in summer to a mixed community of flagellates, green algae and diatoms. Reduced sedimentation losses in the mixed lake, probably in combination with a lower pH, favoured non-buoyant algae, while the entrainment of cyanobacteria in the turbulent flow nullified their advantage of buoyancy.
3. The chlorophyll concentrations were much lower in the mixed lake, but the euphotic depth did not show clear differences between the years. The chlorophyll content integrated through depth (m–2) increased in the artificially mixed lake.
4. The deep lake normally stratified in summer, but artificial mixing of the lake in 1993 resulted in a homogeneous temperature and oxygen distribution with depth. In spring 1994, the mixing was applied intermittently with a reduction of 75% of the energy costs, while the mixing was still sufficient to prevent stratification.
5. Determination of the buoyancy state of the colonies on a sunny and calm day showed that the buoyancy loss was low close to the bubble plumes, and high at some distance from these plumes. This suggests that Microcystis could escape the mixing at some distance from the plumes, and could synthesize more carbohydrates during its stay in the upper illuminated layer of the lake than the deep mixed colonies close to the bubble plumes. Determination of the buoyancy state appeared to be a good and simple method to investigate the extent of entrainment of colonies in the turbulent flow.  相似文献

The ecological and evolutionary implications of dispersal are many. Pollination type and maternal effects may affect plant fitness traits, including life-cycle traits as well as dispersal ability. This study investigated the joint influence of pollination type and maternal effects on both life-cycle traits and dispersal ability in the herb Hypochaeris radicata . We conducted experimental crosses to obtain selfed and outcrossed progeny. Individual seeds and their pappuses were measured to determine seed terminal velocity. Seed size was also used to assess maternal effects. Selfing dramatically decreased seed set, indicating that H. radicata is self-incompatible. However, the few selfed seeds produced outperformed outcrossed seeds in seed size and flowering probability, surely as a result of an effective reallocation of resources among selfed seeds. None of the life-cycle traits was affected by seed size, the estimate of maternal effects. Selfed seeds were larger and bore a smaller pappus than outcrossed seeds. As a result, dispersal ability was lower for selfed than outcrossed seeds. Several factors, such as the low proportion of plants that produced selfed seeds, the low number of selfed seeds produced per plant, and the lack of self-fertility mechanisms might act in concert to prevent the evolution of selfing in H. radicata .  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 146 , 163–170.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Intestinal microsporidiosis in patients diagnosed with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and having chronic diarrhea was first reported in 1985 and the associated microsporidian was named Enterocytozoon bieneusi. the intracellular developmental cycle of E. bieneusi in enterocytes has been demonstrated and many cases have been reported worldwide. This report presents the life cycle of a second intestinal microsporidian, associated with the same symptoms, in five AIDS patients. This new microsporidian also infects enterocytes but its pathology and morphology differ from that of E. bieneusi. It involves lamina propria macrophages, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells and can disseminate to infect other parts of the body, e.g. the kidney and gall bladder. the parasite cycle includes development of rounded uninucleate and elongated bi- or tetranucleate cells without the formation of plasmodial stages. Sporogony is similar to the more typical development of microsporidia with sporoblast morphogenesis occurring after the last cell division. the development of cells within chambers of a septate, honeycomb-like, parasite-secreted fibrillar network and surrounded by a parasitophorous vacuole, however, is unique to this microsporidian, justifying the establishment of a new genus and species, Septata intestinalis n. g., n. sp.  相似文献
