The occurrence of striped colour patterns and of striped/non-striped polymorphism systems among snakes is reviewed from literature data augmented by some personal observations. Among 1367 species, 190 were striped or had striped morphs. Of 11 families, the striped pattern was common mainly among Colubridae, presumably in relation to the active escape behaviour strategy, prevalent in this family. The striped species tended to cluster in a small number of genera. The 40 striped/non-striped polymorphism systems found, fall into five categories, according to the coloration patterns of the alternative morphs: (I) blotched (cryptic); (2) barred (or ringed); (3) plain; (4) melanistic; (5) albinistic. Most polymorphisms are presumably maintained by eco-behavioural trade-offs, depending on the category and on the habitat: The striped morph is presumed more effective in active escape and sometimes also in camouflage; the alternative morph may be more effective in camouflage, in active escape or in thermoregulation. Hence morph frequency depends on the habitat. Striped-albinistic polymorphism in Elaphe climacophora presumably depends on human protection of the albino morph.  相似文献

Hordeum vulgare cv. California Mariout was grown for 50 d insand culture at 100 mol m–3 NaCl. Xylem sap was collectedthrough incisions at the base of individual leaves along thestem axis by applying pressure to the root system. K+ concentrationsin the xylem sap reaching individual leaves increased towardsthe apex, while concentrations of Na+, NO3, and Cldeclined. Phloem exudate was obtained by collecting into Li2EDTAfrom the base of excised leaves. K/Na ratios of phloem exudatesincreased from older to younger leaves. K/Na ratios in xylem sap and phloem exudate were combined withchanges in ion content between two harvests (38 and 45 d aftergermination) and the direction of phloem export from individualleaves, to construct an empirical model of K+ and Na+ net flowswithin the xylem and phloem of the whole plant. This model indicatesthat in old leaves, phloem export of K+ greatly exceeded xylemimport. In contrast, Na+ export was small compared to importand Na+ once imported was retained within the leaf. The direction of export strongly depended on leaf age. Old,basal leaves preferentially supplied the root, and most of theK+ retranslocated to the roots was transferred to the xylemand subsequently became available to the shoot. Upper leavesexported to the apex. Young organs were supplied by xylem andphloem, with the xylem preferentially delivering Na+ , and thephloem most of the K+ . For the young ear, which was still coveredby the sheath of the flag leaf, our calculation predicts phloemimport of ions to such an extent that the surplus must havebeen removed by an outward flow in the xylem. Within the culm,indications for specific transfers of K+ and Na+ between xylemand phloem and release or absorption of these ions by the tissuewere obtained. The sum of these processes in stem internodes and leaves ledto a non-uniform distribution of Na+ and K+ within the shoot,Na+ being retained in old leaves and basal stem internodes,and K+ being available for growth and expansion of young tissues. The value of optimization theory is to provide falsifiable hypothesesand, when appropriate, alternative models of resource regulation.A consideration of alternatives suggests optimal energy regulationthrough feeding depends on time scale and supplies of energyrelativeto demands. Maximization (on-off) control of energyreserves occurs over short intervals involved in consumption,while proportional control occurs over longer intervals (betweenmeals) or as a consequence of trade-offs between energy regulationand nutrient or predation constraints. Maximization of rateof net energy gain occurs most frequently when energy suppliesare low relative to demands and when energy and nutrients arenot associated. This may be typical for small endothermic nectarfeeders, while proportional controls are characteristic of feedingbehaviors for many other animals. Controls for regulating energycontent must also be affected by external environmental variationwhich may require use of "rules of thumb" that approximate themaximum rate of return.  相似文献

The method of compartmental analysis was applied to study sodiumfluxes in roots of intact seedlings of Helianthus annuus L.By measuring sodium uptake and transport to the shoots of theseedlings in parallel experiments, transport of tracer sodiumto shoots and net accumulation of Na+ in the roots during theflux measurements was accounted for. The steady-state sodiumfluxes in the intact sunflower roots were similar in size tothose in excised roots but in general they were somewhat higher.This indicates more metabolic activity in the intact tissues.Using whole plants it is possible to study the response of ionfluxes in roots to ecophysiological stimuli received by theshoots, and in the present experiments the effect of continuouslight versus long-day growth conditions was investigated. Potassium,when continually present, depressed all fluxes and the cytoplasmiccontent of sodium but tended to increase the vacuolar sodiumcontent, in particular when this was related to the cytoplasmiccontent. When added to sodium-loaded roots, potassium stimulatedthe plasmalemma sodium efflux but slightly, suggesting a lowefficiency of K+-Na+ exchange across the plasmalemma in intactas well as excised sunflower roots. Subsequently, however, potassiuminduced a transient decrease in the 22Na efflux that was followedby oscillations in tracer efflux. These changes were attributedto potassium-induced transfer of sodium to vacuoles. Moreover,the oscillations seem to indicate the operation of negativefeedback control of sodium fluxes.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Well washed spore preparations of Bacillus cereus and B. subtilis were suspended in various nutrient broths, soil extracts, autoclaved soil of various moisture contents, and in two inorganic solutions, phosphate buffer, pH 7·2 and Ringer's solution. These were incubated at 8°, 5°, 1° and 0° for periods up to 270 days. Periodic total and spore counts on plates indicated a progressive decrease in each, associated with germination taking place in all conditions except in the two inorganic media. Enzymic tests indicated secretion and activity of nitratase and gelatinase and, with spores of B. pasteurii , urease, as a result of germination. B. subtilis germinated to a greater extent than B. cereus in each of the nutrient media. Germination of both organisms at 5° was also observed in L - and D -alanine: in the latter it was probably the result of racemization to the L -form.  相似文献

1. We examined selected aspects of the nutritional ecology of larval Ptychoptera paludosa and their role in nutrient cycling in the Breitenbach, a first-order stream in Hesse, Germany.
2. Food preference experiments demonstrated significant preference for sediments with a high organic matter content and live bacteria.
3. pH was circumneutral in all sections of the gut.
4. Enzymatic activity (β-glucosidase and amino-peptidase) in different parts of the gut was measured using 4-methylumbelliferyl-β- D -glucopyranoside (MUF-Glc) and leucine-4-methylcoumarinyl-7-amide (Leu-MCA). β-glucosidase activity was highest in the hindgut.
5. The mean larval gut passage time was between 7 and 8 h.
6. The egestion rate of last instar larvae was about 0.35 mg dry weight (DW) faeces per larva h–1 and about 1.25 mg ash-free dry weight (AFDW) faeces per mg larval AFDW day–1.
7. Larval faeces contained at least 4–18 times more organic matter than the average in the sediments in which they were feeding, that is, larvae fed selectively, extracting organic matter from sediments.
8. P. paludosa larvae are important in the dynamics of detritus in slow-flowing reaches of the Breitenbach. They gather organic material from the sediment to a depth of 3 cm, and release it as faeces onto the sediment surface. A total of 770 g DW faeces m–2 yr–1, comprising about 16% organic matter, was produced by the Ptychoptera population.  相似文献

We recently described an in vitro approach that uses root culturesto study haustorial formation in Striga asiatica. Previous studieshave used haustoria formed on intact radicles of Striga seedlings.In vitro cultured roots formed haustoria that appeared morphologicallysimilar to those formed by Striga radicles, but were 5–10-foldlarger. In this study, we provide biochemical and histologicalevidence to support further the similarity of root culture haustoriato haustoria formed on radicles of seedlings. We examined invivo protein synthesis during haustorial development on rootcultures and radicles by 2-D PAGE. Four proteins increased inabundance in both root cultures and radicles after 6 h of haustorialinduction. All four proteins appeared transiently in root culturesand radicles, being more abundant at 6 h, and less abundantafter 24 h of haustorial induction. Only three of the four haustorial-specificproteins were more abundant in root cultures after 2 h of haustorialinduction; all four had decreased in abundance after 12 h ofhaustorial induction. Using light microscopic analysis we comparedthe ontogeny of root culture haustoria to that of haustoriaon radicles. These studies revealed that root culture haustoriaundergo developmental changes similar to those reported forradicle haustoria such as early expansion of cortical cells,the emergence of haustorial hairs from epidermal cells, andthe development of densely staining cells at the haustorialapex. In addition, these changes occurred within a similar time-frameand sequence in root culture and radicle haustoria. Abstract Cyclones cause profound immediate impacts on tropical rainforest trees, including defoliation, limb loss, snapping of stems and uprooting. Some studies have shown that plant functional traits such as tree size, buttress roots and wood density are correlated with these forms of cyclone damage. On 20 March 2006, Severe Tropical Cyclone Larry crossed the north Queensland coast and proceeded inland across the Atherton Tablelands, impacting the critically endangered Mabi Type 5b rainforest. We investigated the effects of Cyclone Larry on common tree species by categorizing damage to trees as uprooted, snapped, limbs damaged (light, moderate, severe) or upright and estimating levels of defoliation. Damage was then related to functional traits including tree size, presence of buttress roots, wood density, and leaf size and strength. Levels of damage differed between species. Tree size (diameter at breast height) and the presence of buttress roots were not related to damage levels. Wood density was significantly negatively correlated to proportion of trees with snapped stems and significantly positively correlated with the proportion of trees upright with no or light limb damage. Levels of defoliation were significantly related to leaf strength (specific leaf area – SLA) and to leaf width, but not other components of leaf size (area or length) or petiole length. Species with high wood density and low SLA (e.g. Argyrodendron spp.) were found to have high cyclone resistance, the ability to resist damage, while species with low wood density and high SLA (e.g. Dendrocnide photinophylla) exhibited low resistance. However, traits related to low resistance are also those linked to rapid growth and high cyclone resilience, the ability to recover from damage, so it is unlikely that the Mabi forest will experience long‐term changes in floristic composition following Cyclone Larry.  相似文献
