Abstract Samples of head lice and body lice obtained from Ethiopians suffering from double infestations were mounted onto microscope slides and measured. The mean length of body lice (♀ 4.4mm; ♂ 3.8mm) was greater than that of head lice (♀ 3.5 mm; ♂ 2.9mm), but the best discriminant was the length of the tibia of the middle leg (♀ 425/296 μ♂421/291 μ). No intermediate specimens were found in these double infestations, although intermediates can can be produced experimentally by cross-mating. Since populations of head lice and body lice remain distinct it is concluded that they represent two distinct species, Pediculus capitis De Geer and P. humanus Linneaus.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Shale oil retort water is obtained by centrifuging the oil/water emulsion produced by oil shale retorting. The ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis was exposed to retort water; 2, 1, and 0.5% initially increased motility; longer exposures decreased motility. Three, 4, and 5% all decreased motility. Cell lysis was directly related to concentration; after 24 h, population densities were 0, 10, and 25% of controls for 2, 1, and 0.5% retort water, respectively. Oxygen consumption paralleled the motility pattern: at lower concentrations it increased initially but decreased with extended exposures while at higher concentrations it decreased rapidly. The most striking cytologic alteration of cells exposed to the toxicant occurred in the membranes; alterations of mucocysts and glycogen content were also observed, but mitochondrial changes were not. Population growth was affected at much lower concentrations than the other test indices. The growth of test populations reached a plateau at values inversely related to concentration: concentrations <0.4% had no effect on growth rate.  相似文献

Abstract. The rate of curvature of etiolated cress ( Lepi-dium sativum L. ) hypocotyls in response to gravity (negative geotropism) was retarded by red or blue light; far-red irradiation was without effect. The timing of the irradiation period in relation to the presentation for geostimulus markedly affected the response. When seedlings were irradiated during the 1–2 h period of geostimulus, blue light was more effective than red at retarding curvature; when seedlings were irradiated prior to geostimulus, only red light affected geocurvature. These results are interpreted as a further example of the kinetically distinct effects of red and blue light on hypocotyl development. Blue light elicited a rapid, immediate response effective only during the period of irradiation; red light induced a response characterized by a lag period and persistence in subsequent darkness. Etiolated mustard seedlings showed similar responses to light and gravity. The results are discussed in relation to the possibility that two photosystems operate in hypocotyl growth.  相似文献

A principal point of disagreement in conodont ecology between the pelagic depth stratification model and the benthic model of lateral segregation is the mode of life of the conodont animal. A study of the literature on certain Recent benthic and planktic organisms that may serve as ecologic analogues (chaetognaths, isopods, foraminifers) indicates that distributional patterns alone are not definitive of a pelagic versus a benthic habit. Therefore, we doubt that it is possible to determine the major ecologic mode of conodonts solely from distributional data. Because there is not consistent congruence between lithofacies and conodont biofacies, it is unlikely that conodonts were infaunal or sessile epifaunal benthos. The probable alternatives are nektobenthic or neritic pelagic animals and these may have been subject to such similar controlling hydrographic factors that it is now extremely difficult to distinguish between them, especially in an extinct group of uncertain zoologic affinity. Apparently, the only significant line of evidence for pelagic mode is the Occurrence of some conodonts in black shales that are devoid of unquestioned benthic fossils and presumably formed under anoxic bottom conditions.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The carbohydrate of variant-specific surface antigen glycoproteins from bloodstream forms of 13 cloned variants of Trypanosoma brucei was analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. The glycoproteins contained from 6 to 17% carbohydrate by weight, and all contained the same 4 sugars: mannose, galactose, glucose, and glucosamine (probably as N-acetyl-glucosamine). The glycoprotein from variant 048, strain 427 contained (±20%) 11 mannose, 4 galactose, 4 glucose, and 5 glucosamine residues/mole of glycoprotein (molecular weight 65,000). Glucose was an integral component of the glycoproteins, not dissociable by sodium dodecyl sulphate, 8 M urea, or 1 M acetic acid. Some of the glucose was dissociated by trichloroacetic acid. Most of the glycoproteins formed precipitin bands with concanavalin A in Ouchterlony double diffusion, but none formed such bands with wheat germ agglutinin or Ricinus communis lectin (molecular weight 120,000).  相似文献

The erythrocytic developmental cycle of Plasmodium falciparum can be conveniently divided into the ring, trophozoite, and schizont stages based on morphology and metabolism. Using highly synchronous cultures of P. falciparum, considerable variation was demonstrated among these stages in sensitivity to chloroquine. The effects of timed, sequential exposure to several clinically relevant concentrations of chloroquine were monitored by three techniques: morphological analysis, changes in the rate of glucose consumption, and changes in the incorporation of 3H-hypoxanthine into parasite nucleic acids. All three techniques gave essentially identical results. The trophozoite and schizont stages were considerably more sensitive to the drug than ring-stage parasites. Chloroquine sensitivity decreased as nuclear division neared completion. The increase in chloroquine sensitivity was coincident with a marked rise in the rate of glucose consumption and nucleic acid synthesis. The rate of nucleic acid synthesis decreased as schizogony progressed while glucose consumption continued at high rates during this process. The degree of chloroquine sensitivity was not highly correlated with either metabolic activity.  相似文献

Analysis of growth during geotropic curvature in seedling hypocotyls   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0  
Abstract. The patterns of growth in organs curving under the influence of gravity were analysed by time-lapse photography of cress and cucumber hypocotyls which were delimited into 1 mm zones by ion-exchange beads. Geotropic curvature resulted from changes in growth rate on both sides of the organ. Growth inhibition of varying degrees of intensity occurred in all the previously growing zones of the upper (concave) side. An absolute reduction in length due to compression frequently occurred in some zones. Also, in both species growth stimulation was observed on the lower (convex) side. The disparity in growth rate between the upper and lower surfaces varied with time, being more apparent in the subapical region in the first hour of curvature. A later promotion of growth rate on the lower surface subsequently increased the curvature of the more basal zones. Autotropic straightening occurred as a consequence of growth changes, both inhibitory and stimulatory, in the apical zones. These events indicate a polarity of response in which apical zones have precedence over basal zones.  相似文献

Using seed priming and accelerated ageing techniques, a singlelot of leek (Allium porrum) seeds was manipulated to producefour lots of seeds with different germination performance. Changesin content of the major nucleic acid species in whole seedsand embryos of two of these lots (primed and unprimed), weredetermined over the early stages of germination. The major effectof priming was an increased level of RNA species in the seedsand embryos, and this difference was maintained during germination.Comparison of nucleic acid levels in the dry seeds of thesetwo lots and two others (aged and aged then primed) indicatedthat there was no correlation with germination performance.Similar comparisons of the nucleic acid levels in the embryosof seeds imbibed for 1 d showed only a limited correlation betweenrRNA levels and germination performance. Analysis of these datasuggests that accelerated ageing has an adverse effect uponendosperm cells, which results in the degradation of their nucleicacids during priming. Furthermore, the viability of these agedseeds also falls during priming. The data also indicate thatratios of rRNA to DNA correlate with germination performanceof the four lots of seeds studied. It is proposed that sucha relationship is indicative of the efficiency of a primingtreatment, and may be useful in comparisons of naturally varyingseed lots. Photosynthetic acclimation was examined by exposing third trifoliolateleaves of soybeans to air temperatures of 20 to 30°C andphotosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD) of 150 to 950µmolphotons m–2 s–1 for the last 3 d before they reachedmaximum area. In some cases the environment of the third leafwas controlled separately from that of the rest of the plant.Photosynthesis, respiration and dry mass accumulation were determinedunder the treatment conditions, and photosynthetic capacity,and dry mass and protein content were determined at full expansion.Photosynthetic capacity, the light-saturated rate of net carbondioxide exchange at 25°C and 34 Pa external partial pressureof carbon dioxide, could be modified between 21 and 35 µmolCO2 m–2 s–1 by environmental changes after leaveshad become exporters of photosynthate. Protein per unit leafmass did not differ between treatments, and photosynthetic capacityincreased with leaf mass per unit area. Photosynthetic capacityof third leaves was affected by the PPFD incident on those leaves,but not by the PPFD on other leaves on the plant. Photosyntheticcapacity of third leaves was affected by the temperature ofthe rest of the plant, but not by the temperature of the thirdleaves. Photosynthetic capacity was linearly related to carbondioxide exchange rate in the growth regimes, but not to daytimePPFD. At high PPFD, and at 25 and 30°C, mass accumulationwas about 28% of the mass of photosynthate produced. At lowerPPFD, and at 20°C, larger percentages of the photosynthateproduced accumulated as dry mass. The results suggest that photosynthatesupply is an important factor controlling leaf structural growthand, consequently, photosynthetic acclimation to light and temperature.
