Microbial‐mediated decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) ultimately makes a considerable contribution to soil respiration, which is typically the main source of CO2 arising from terrestrial ecosystems. Despite this central role in the decomposition of SOM, few studies have been conducted on how climate change may affect the soil microbial community and, furthermore, on how possible climate‐change induced alterations in the ecology of microbial communities may affect soil CO2 emissions. Here we present the results of a seasonal study on soil microbial community structure, SOM decomposition and its temperature sensitivity in two representative Mediterranean ecosystems where precipitation/throughfall exclusion has taken place during the last 10 years. Bacterial and fungal diversity was estimated using the terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. Our results show that fungal diversity was less sensitive to seasonal changes in moisture, temperature and plant activity than bacterial diversity. On the other hand, fungal communities showed the ability to dynamically adapt throughout the seasons. Fungi also coped better with the 10 years of precipitation/throughfall exclusion compared with bacteria. The high resistance of fungal diversity to changes with respect to bacteria may open the controversy as to whether future ‘drier conditions’ for Mediterranean regions might favor fungal dominated microbial communities. Finally, our results indicate that the fungal community exerted a strong influence over the temporal and spatial variability of SOM decomposition and its sensitivity to temperature. The results, therefore, highlight the important role of fungi in the decomposition of terrestrial SOM, especially under the harsh environmental conditions of Mediterranean ecosystems, for which models predict even drier conditions in the future.  相似文献

To determine how root‐to‐shoot abscisic acid (ABA) signalling is regulated by vertical soil moisture gradients, root ABA concentration ([ABA]root), the fraction of root water uptake from, and root water potential of different parts of the root zone, along with bulk root water potential, were measured to test various predictive models of root xylem ABA concentration [RX‐ABA]sap. Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Nassau) were grown in soil columns and received different irrigation treatments (top and basal watering, and withholding water for varying lengths of time) to induce different vertical soil moisture gradients. Root water uptake was measured at four positions within the column by continuously recording volumetric soil water content (θv). Average θv was inversely related to bulk root water potential (Ψroot). In turn, Ψroot was correlated with both average [ABA]root and [RX‐ABA]sap. Despite large gradients in θv, [ABA]root and root water potential was homogenous within the root zone. Consequently, unlike some split‐root studies, root water uptake fraction from layers with different soil moisture did not influence xylem sap (ABA). This suggests two different patterns of ABA signalling, depending on how soil moisture heterogeneity is distributed within the root zone, which might have implications for implementing water‐saving irrigation techniques.  相似文献

The transition between oviparity and viviparity in reptiles is generally accepted to be a gradual process, the result of selection for increasingly prolonged egg retention within the oviduct. We examined egg retention plasticity in an oviparous strain of the lacertid lizard Zootoca vivipara, a species having both oviparous and viviparous populations. We forced a group of female Z. vivipara to retain their clutch in utero by keeping them in dry substrata, and assessed the effect on embryonic development and hatching success, along with offspring phenotype and locomotor performance. Forced egg retention for one additional week affected the developmental stage of embryos at oviposition, as well as hatchling robustness and locomotor performance. However, embryos from forced clutch retention treatment reached one stage unit more than control embryos at oviposition time. Embryos from control eggs were more developed than embryos from experimental eggs after approximately the same period of external incubation, showing that embryonic development is retarded during the period of extended egg retention, despite the high temperature inside the mother's body. Significant differences in external incubation time were only found in one of the two years of study. Hatching success was much lower in the experimental group with forced egg retention (21.1%) than in the control group (95.4%). Therefore, we conclude that there are limitations that hinder the advance of intrauterine embryonic development beyond the normal time of oviposition, and that extended egg retention does not represent clear advantages in this population of Z. vivipara. Genetic divergence in bat communities was assessed on both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar and cryptic diversity was examined. Screening was carried out using partial sequences of the mitochondrial (mt)DNA cytochrome b gene on 399 individual bats belonging to the 18 species found on both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar. For those bats that showed important genetic discontinuities, molecular markers (ND1 and nuclear RAG2 genes) were added to expand the sampling process. Phylogenetic reconstructions were obtained using maximum parsinomy, genetic distances, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian criteria. As an estimate of bats' flight performance, we measured for each species the wing aspect ratio and wing loading indexes, and correlated them with the maximum pairwise genetic distances obtained between southern Iberian and northern Moroccan populations. Genetic mtDNA distances between populations on both continents exceed 5% in seven out of 18 bat species analysed and unknown lineages were uncovered within the species complexes Myotis nattereri and Myotis mystacinus . We did not find a general pattern in the degree of permeability of the Straits of Gibraltar for bats. Genetic distances were not correlated with the ability to cross the Straits. A NEW PIPINE FROG FROM AN EOCENE CRATER LAKE IN NORTH-CENTRAL TANZANIA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract:  The fossiliferous site of Mahenge, Tanzania, interpreted as a small lake that formed in a kimberlite intrusion, has yielded a vertebrate assemblage that includes scarce frog remains. Radiometric dating of the pipe indicates that the volcanic activity took place at 45·83 ± 0·17 Ma, whereas infilling of the crater was completed in 0·2–1·0 myr after emplacement. The frogs, described herein, are preserved as partially articulated skeletons that represent a new pipine taxon, Singidella latecostata gen. et sp. nov. A parsimony analysis of fossil and extant pipoid frogs indicates that Singidella is more closely related to African Hymenochirus and Pseudhymenochirus than to South American Pipa . It also provides weak support for the sister-group relationship of Singidella and the bizarre Late Cretaceous Pachycentrata taqueti (replacement name for Pachybatrachus taqueti ) from Niger, although the incomplete preservation of Pachycentrata precludes thorough comparisons. This record indicates that prior to the rifting in the Miocene the distribution of pipines extended into eastern Africa where they do not occur today.  相似文献

This paper examines the effect of ungulates on epigeal arthropod communities in two common plant communities of the high mountains of the Sierra Nevada (southeast Spain). We have compared the abundance, biomass, diversity and specific composition of arthropod communities in grazed and ungrazed plots experimentally excluded from ungulates. In general, we found that arthropods were more abundant and diverse in grazed than in ungrazed plots. However, the effect of ungulates depended on the variable considered (diversity versus abundance versus biomass). Moreover, ungulates also affected species composition. This means that without affecting diversity, ungulates can still have a strong effect on arthropod communities by changing species composition. Also, the relationship between ungulates and arthropods differed depending on the year of study and the sampling period. In conclusion, our study indicates that to extrapolate the results obtained for a group of insects, a habitat or a sampling period is not appropriate for the conservation of arthropod communities.  相似文献

Abstract The aim of this paper was to test the hypothesis that the presence of overwintering Calomys venustus males or females at the beginning of the breeding period reduced the survival of juveniles belonging to the first cohort of each year (C1). The study was carried out in four 0.25‐ha enclosures (two control and two experimental), each situated on natural pasture. This study was conducted between August 1997 and February 1999 and had two parts: removal of overwintering males (ROM) and removal of overwintering females (ROF). For the ROM treatment, overwintering males were removed immediately after C1 juveniles were born, in the ROF treatment overwintering females were removed after the C1 were weaned. Weekly censuses were taken for 3 successive days over 6 weeks. Juvenile survival was examined through a survivorship schedule. The survivorship values were compared by sex and treatment (removal of overwintering males or females) using repeated‐measures anova . Removal of overwintering males and females did not improve the survival of C1 juveniles. This result could be related to the delay in maturation of C1 juvenile males.  相似文献

The increase in spring temperatures in temperate regions over the last two decades has led to an advancing spring phenology, and most resident birds have responded to it by advancing their onset of breeding. The pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) is a long‐distance migrant bird with a relatively late onset of breeding with respect to both resident birds and spring phenology in Europe. In the present correlational study, we show that some fitness components of pied flycatchers are suffering from climate change in two of the southernmost European breeding populations. In both montane study areas, temperature during May increased between 1980 and 2000 and an advancement of oak leafing was detected by using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to assess tree phenology. This might result in an advancement of the peak in availability of caterpillars, the main prey during the nestling stage. Over the past 18 yr, the time of egg laying and clutch size of pied flycatchers were not affected by the increase in spring temperatures in these Mediterranean populations. However, this increase seems to have an adverse effect on the reproductive output of pied flycatchers over the same period. Our data suggest that the mismatch between the timing of peak food supply and nestling demand caused by recent climate change might result in a reduction of parental energy expenditure that is reflected in a reduction of nestling growth and survival of fledged young in our study populations. The data seem to indicate that the breeding season has not shifted and it is the environment that has shifted away from the timing of the pied flycatcher breeding season. Mediterranean pied flycatchers were not able to advance their onset of breeding, probably, because they are constrained by their late arrival date and their restricted high altitude breeding habitat selection near the southern border of their range.  相似文献

The temporal origins of the extraordinary biodiversity of the Neotropical region are highly debated. Recent empirical work has found support for alternative models on the tempo of speciation in Neotropical species further fuelling the debate. However, relationships within many Neotropical lineages are poorly understood, and it is unclear how this uncertainty impacts inferences on the evolution of taxa in the region. We examined the robustness of diversification patterns in the avian genus Forpus by testing whether the use of different units of biodiversity (i.e. biological species and statistically inferred species) impacted diversification rates and inferences regarding important biogeographic breaks in the genus. We found that the best‐fit model of diversification for the biological species data set was a declining rate of diversification; whereas a model of constant diversification was the best‐fit model for statistically inferred species or subspecies. Moreover, the relative importance of different landscape features in delimiting genetic structure across the landscape varied across data sets with differing units of biodiversity. Patterns based on divergence times among biological species indicated old speciation events across major geographic and river barriers. In contrast, data sets more inclusive of the diversity in Forpus illustrate the role of both old divergence across major landscape features and more recent divergences that are possibly attributed to Pleistocene climatic changes. Overall, these results indicate that conflicting models on the temporal origins of Neotropical birds may be attributable to sampling biases.  相似文献
