  • 1 This paper summarizes twenty years of ecological research on aquatic oligochaetes of the Upper Rhône River and its alluvial floodplain (France). Species traits of fifty species of the ninety taxa recorded from two areas Gons and Brégnier-Cordon) were used to examine the relationships among species traits, habitat utilization of these species, whether a relationship exists between species traits and habitat utilization, and the applicability of predictions from the river habitat templet and the patch dynamics concept in the framework of spatial and temporal habitat variability. We used fourteen habitat types and sixteen species traits in this analysis.
  • 2 When examined by correspondence analysis, species traits separate the Naididae (with a higher potential for reproduction, small size, high mobility, and opportunistic diet) from all other families.
  • 3 Habitat utilization by oligochaetes demonstrates two gradients: a vertical gradient that arranges species by their affinity for interstitial habitats (stygophily) and a transversal gradient that arranges them by their affinity for main channel habitats (rheophily).
  • 4 No significant relationship was found between species traits and habitat utilization in a co-inertia analysis.
  • 5 Trends observed for species traits within the framework of spatial-temporal habitat variability show only minor agreement with predictions of the river habitat templet.
  • 6 Species richness is generally higher in superficial and interstitial habitats that are permanently connected with the main channel, and peaks in the superficial parapotamons (backwaters that are permanently connected with the main channel) characterized by intermediate levels of spatial as well as temporal variability; this pattern only partially fits with predictions of the patch dynamics concept.

The incubation routine and mass changes of male and female Blue Petrel Halobaena caerulea were studied at the Kerguelen Islands to investigate factors influencing the durations of incubation stints and foraging trips at sea and the factors determining nest desertion and return to the nest.
The body mass at the start of an incubation shift and also when the bird was relieved varied throughout the incubation period, whereas the mass when birds deserted the nest was stable. Birds deserted the nest when their mass decreased to threshold, independent of the duration of the fast. Temporary egg neglect was observed in successful as well as in unsuccessful breeding attempts, but it increased the risk of breeding failure. The net and daily massgained at sea during the second part of the incubation period were higher than during the first part, suggesting an increase in food availability. During the first part, the mass gained at sea and time spent foraging were inversely related to the mass of the bird before it left the burrow, whereas a similar relationship did not occur thereafter.
The results suggest the occurrence of a fixed mass threshold when birds decide to leave the nest if not relieved by their partner. The mass when a bird left its nest inffuenced the time spent foraging or mass gained when food was scarce. Although decision rules to leave the nest or return from the sea are related to body condition. the possibility of neglecting the eggs temporarily enables Blue Petrels to regulate the trade-off between risks of breeding failure and risks of an increase in adult mortality. A model for behavioural decision to stop incubating or stop feeding, based on a variable set point, is proposed.  相似文献

In order to study the effects of inorganic phosphate (P1) starvationon C4plants, 3-week-old maize plants (Zea maysL cv. Brulouis)were grown in a growth chamber on a nutrient solution withoutP1 over 22 d During the first 2 weeks, Pi-starved plants grewas well as control plants The Pi concentration in the planttissue decreased rapidly with time, which suggests that normalbiomass production can be maintained at the expense of internalP1 In addition, photosynthetic CO2 assimilation measured 4-6h after dawn was not affected, but the concentration of glucose,sucrose, and starch in leaves was much higher than in the controls14CO2 pulse-chase experiments earned out on the ninth day oftreatment showed that 14CO2 assimilation was perturbed duringthis initial period, resulting in a larger flow of carbon toboth starch and sucrose At the beginning of the third week ofP1 starvation (15 d after treatment) 14C incorporation intosucrose stayed high relative to controls but this was not thecase for starch At the end of the third week of P1-deficiency,shoot growth was considerably reduced and fresh weight was onlyone-third of that of the control plants. The P1 concentrationof both the leaf and root tissues was less than 1.0 µmolg–1 FW compared to 20-25µmol g1 FW in the controls.Photosynthetic CO2 assimilation was reduced and the leaf concentrationof sucrose and starch, which had begun to decrease after theend of the second week of P1 limitation, became lower than inthe controls. These results obtained on maize plants show thatphotosynthesis and carbon partitioning between sucrose and starchwere strongly affected by P1 deficiency, similar to C3 species. A Fourier analysis was used to study the marked variations inthe rate of shoot elongation and branch formation of young Terminaliasuperba plants. The growth of aerial parts of 3-month-old Terminaliaseedlings was measured daily during the following 7 months ofgrowth, and then weekly over a 15-month period of study. Measurementswere carried out in a controlled glasshouse at 27 °C and16 h photoperiod. The Fourier method clearly demonstrated thatthe main axis of young T. superba showed periodical regularvariations, with rest periods. This study revealed that theplagiotropic branch formation by apposition and elongation ofaxillary units was equally rhythmic and directly related tothe main shoot growth rhythm. However, the dates of outbreakof these new units on branches seemed relatively independentfrom variations in shoot growth rate. This developmental patternended in a characteristic and particular stratified branch systemin young Terminalia superba, comparable to the system shownby adult plants in their natural environment. Long-day conditions increase internode length, leaf area, anddry weight and reduce the interval between the appearance ofsuccessive leaf pairs in S. rebaudiana as compared with shortdays. Total soluble leaf sugars, protein, and stevioside contentare also augmented in both absolute and relative terms and thebiosynthesis of steviol, the aglucone present in stevioside,is increased by 45%. The interaction between dry matter, steviosidecontent, and day length is discussed and a theory for the biologicalrole of stevioside as a possible defence mechanism against insectherbivory is proposed: as such this is the first known caseof a tetracyclic diterpene glycoside assuming this function.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The physiological and morphological responses of variouslittoral algal species to the stresses imposed upon the adultsand sporelings by a number of interrelated factors in differentlatitudes are discussed in so far as there is experimental evidencethat they delimit the vertical range of a species. The upperlimits of algal zones in the eulittoral region are primarilydetermined by the resistance of the species to loss of waterduring midday exposure, by the effects of desiccation upon metabolism,by the ability to adjust their osmoregulatory processes duringthe periods of exposure to the rapid changes of salinity, andby the degree of tolerance to diurnal and seasonal changes ofair temperatures. Low intensity of light reduces the metabolicefficiency and affects the resistance to desiccation and tovariations in temperature and salinity. The lower limits of the eulittoral algal zones are primarilycontrolled by the intensity of light, by the competition withalgae and invertebrates for space and light, and by grazinganimals. The primary factors controlling the upper limits of the sublittoralalgae are the depth of the wave base; the ability to utilizethe submarine illumination as affected by turbidity and waveaction in the layers of surface water; and the resistance tohydrostatic pressure. The lower limits of the sublittoral algae and both the upperand lower limits of theelittoral algal zones are controlledby the illumination and its effect upon the compensation-depth,the hydrostatic pressure, and the availability of nutrients.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Ungulate mortality from capture-related injuries is a recurring concern for researchers and game managers throughout North America and elsewhere. We evaluated effects of 7 variables to determine whether ungulate mortality could be reduced by modifying capture and handling procedures during helicopter net-gunning. During winter 2001–2006, we captured 208 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and 281 pronghorn (Antilocapra Americana) by helicopter net-gunning throughout the Northern Great Plains. Of 281 pronghorn, 25 (8.9%) died from capture-related injuries; 12 were from direct injuries during capture, and 13 occurred postrelease. Of 208 deer, 3 (1.4%) died from injuries sustained during helicopter captures, with no mortalities documented postrelease. We used logistic regression to evaluate the probability that ungulates would die of injuries associated with helicopter net-gun captures by analyzing effects of snow depth, transport distance, ambient and rectal temperatures, pursuit and handling times, and whether individuals were transported to processing sites. The probability of capture-related mortality postrelease decreased 58% when transport distance was reduced from 14.5 km to 0 km and by 69% when pursuit time decreased from 9 minutes to <1 minute. Wildlife managers and researchers using helicopter capture services in landscapes of the Midwest should limit pursuit time and eliminate animal transport during pronghorn and white-tailed deer capture operations to minimize mortality rates postrelease.  相似文献

Morphological data, in combination with molecular data, may provide invaluable insights into speciation processes on archipelagos. Land snails offer ample opportunities to evalutate adaptive and non-adaptive speciation scenarios. However, studies investigating processes of differentiation and speciation on the Azores are scarce. The present study comprises a morphometrical analysis of shell and genital characters in a group of Azorean land snails (Pulmonata, Leptaxinae). Geographical isolation appears to be an important mechanism underlying morphological and molecular differentiation in the Azorean Leptaxini, instead of adaptive radiation through ecological differentiation. Nevertheless, we could not exclude the occurrence of ecological speciation on the oldest island (Santa Maria) where two species that markedly differ in shell-shape co-occur.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 166–176.  相似文献
