Tropical species are predicted to have limited capacity for acclimation to global warming. This study investigated the potential for developmental thermal acclimation by the tropical damselfish Pomacentrus moluccensis to ocean temperatures predicted to occur over the next 50–100 years. Newly settled juveniles were reared for 4 months in four temperature treatments, consisting of the current-day summer average (28.5 °C) and up to 3 °C above the average (29.5, 30.5 and 31.5 °C). Resting metabolic rate (RMR) of fish reared at 29.5 and 31.5 °C was significantly higher than the control group reared at 28.5 °C. In contrast, RMR of fish reared at 30.5 °C was not significantly different from the control group, indicating these fish had acclimated to their rearing temperature. Furthermore, fish that developed in 30.5 and 31.5 °C exhibited an enhanced ability to deal with acute temperature increases. These findings illustrate that developmental acclimation may help coral reef fish cope with warming ocean temperatures.  相似文献

Invasive house mice Mus musculus are known to impact on seabird, invertebrate and plant communities on temperate and subantarctic islands, particularly where they are the sole rodent species. Steeple Jason, in the Falkland Islands, is an island which supports globally important seabird populations as well as introduced mice. To evaluate the prospects for mouse eradication, we investigated mouse ecology and undertook bait uptake trials on Steeple Jason in late winter. Mice were present in all habitats but were most abundant in tussac Poa flabellata where they occurred at 20–35 mice ha?1. From 58 mature perforate females, 16 % were pregnant, with litters of 4–8 pups. The first lactating female was caught at the end of August, suggesting that breeding had recently begun. Bait trials replicating an aerial eradication were undertaken on two trapping grids of 7.7 and 6.8 ha, with non-toxic pellets containing the biomarker pyranine spread at 7.5–7.7 kg ha?1. All 447 mice captured after baiting had consumed bait. The relatively low winter density, distribution and biology of house mice on Steeple Jason are similar to those observed before other successful mice eradications, and the study indicated 100 % bait acceptance. Before an eradication attempt, we suggest investigating whether breeding ceases completely earlier in the winter and urge careful consideration of non-target species.  相似文献

Artificial insemination (AI) is an important technique in all domestic species to ensure rapid genetic progress. The use of AI has been reported in camelids although insemination trials are rare. This could be because of the difficulties involved in collecting as well as handling the semen due to the gelatinous nature of the seminal plasma. The characteristics of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolt run of the Rivière Saint-Jean, Quebec, Canada, in 2009 and 2010 were determined using acoustic telemetry. Tagged smolts were tracked from freshwater release sites for 17 km, then through the estuary and for their entry into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The smolt migration began in both years at water temperatures of 10 °C, but lasted twice as long in the cooler year. The smolts in 2009 crossed the river to ocean boundary faster than the smolts of 2010, despite being similar in size. Smolt speed over ground increased from the river to the estuary to the marine environment. Smolts migrated both during the day and the night, but most movements began near or just after sunset, with increasingly nocturnal movements in the ocean. Smolts crossed the estuary during ebbing tides and moved faster during the night than the day. The tide cycle also influenced estuarine smolt travelling rates, but only secondarily to the diel cycle.  相似文献

Changes in fish assemblages between the zones above and below Funil dam in Southeastern Brazil were investigated to evaluate the possible impacts of this impoundment in two contrasting seasons: summer/wet and winter/dry. We expect differences in fish assemblage structure and in environmental conditions between seasons and between the reservoir and the zone downriver of the dam. A total of 3,579 individuals comprising 38 species, including six non-natives, were collected. As expected, the comparatively high habitat complexity and water flow regime of the downriver zone favored a richer and more abundant fish assemblage compared with the reservoir, especially in the wet season. In this period, water covers part of the riparian vegetation, increasing habitat availability and nutrient input. Additionally, the dam prevents upriver migration of rheophilics fish species such as the Characiformes Prochilodus lineatus and Leporinus copelandii, and the Siluriformes Pimelodus fur and Pimelodus maculatus, thus increasing shoals below the dam. Although the reservoir represents a simplified ecosystem highly influenced by non-native top predator species (e.g. the Perciformes Cichla kelberi and Plagioscion squamosissimus), seasonal processes (e.g. water level fluctuations and flood pulses) seem to play a role in structuring of the fish assemblage. Environmental variables, mainly turbidity, temperature, and conductivity were significantly associated to spatial-temporal patterns of fish assemblage. In this freshwater tropical reservoir, the spatial scale, rather than the seasonal changes in environmental variables, was the dominant factor structuring fish assemblage in the reservoir and in the zone downriver of the dam.  相似文献

Abstract

In attempts to optimize the cross-linked lexitropsin design, a number of cross-linked dimers composed of two tris(N-methylpyrrolecarboxamide) strands were synthesized and their binding interactions with poly d(A)? poly d(T) and poly d(A-T)?poly d(A-T) were characterized by circular dichroism and ethidium fluorometry. While all alkanediyl-linked dimers showed a similar binding behavior to the homo AT polymer, particularly at low ligand concentrations, the decanediyl linker was found to be the optimal linker permitting the bidentate anti parallel side-by-side binding of the corresponding dimer to the alternating AT polymer. Thus, in comparison with the monomer, the decanediyl-linked dimer has a binding strength enhancement of about 1400 times in the I: I binding mode. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of the linker has a significant effect on the bidentate binding strength. The (3,6)-dioxaoctanediyl-linked dimer has a further binding strength enhancement of 10 times over the decanediyl-linked dimer. Overall, the best optimized dimer has a binding strength enhancement of over 14,000 times in comparison with the monomer in the I: I binding mode. This binding enhancement parallels that observed in the best optimized bisintercalators. Distance-restrained molecular modeling provides support for the experimental results. Dimers of longer linkers can readily accommodate a bidentate anti parallel side-by-side binding mode but those of shorter linkers necessitate marked structural distortions in the bound ligand molecules. It is further observed that the binding strength enhancement to the alternating AT polymer is not always accompanied by the binding specificity improvement. Our analysis suggests that the non-specific appendage-DNA backbone interaction is a key factor that controls the specificity improvement.  相似文献
