Variation in the environment can induce different patterns of genetic and phenotypic differentiation among populations. Both neutral processes and selection can influence phenotypic differentiation. Altitudinal phenotypic variation is of particular interest in disentangling the interplay between neutral processes and selection in the dynamics of local adaptation processes but remains little explored. We conducted a common garden experiment to study the phenotypic divergence in larval life-history traits among nine populations of the common toad (Bufo bufo) along an altitudinal gradient in France. We further used correlation among population pairwise estimates of quantitative trait (QST) and neutral genetic divergence (FST from neutral microsatellite markers), as well as altitudinal difference, to estimate the relative role of divergent selection and neutral genetic processes in phenotypic divergence. We provided evidence for a neutral genetic differentiation resulting from both isolation by distance and difference in altitude. We found evidence for phenotypic divergence along the altitudinal gradient (faster development, lower growth rate and smaller metamorphic size). The correlation between pairwise QSTs–FSTs and altitude differences suggested that this phenotypic differentiation was most likely driven by altitude-mediated selection rather than by neutral genetic processes. Moreover, we found different divergence patterns for larval traits, suggesting that different selective agents may act on these traits and/or selection on one trait may constrain the evolution on another through genetic correlation. Our study highlighted the need to design more integrative studies on the common toad to unravel the underlying processes of phenotypic divergence and its selective agents in the context of environmental clines.  相似文献

More and more research are being done on food bolus formation during mastication. However, the process of bolus formation in the mouth is difficult to observe. A mastication simulator, the Artificial Masticatory Advanced Machine (AM2) was developed to overcome this difficulty and is described here. Different variables can be set such as the number of masticatory cycles, the amplitude of the mechanical movements simulating the vertical and lateral movements of the human lower jaw, the masticatory force, the temperature of the mastication chamber and the injection and the composition of saliva. The median sizes of the particles collected from the food boluses made by the AM2 were compared with those of human boluses obtained with peanuts and carrots as test foods. Our results showed that AM2 mimicked human masticatory behavior, producing a food bolus with similar granulometric characteristics.  相似文献

Abstract: Five glysosidases (α- and β-D-mannosidase, β-D-galactosidase, β- N -acetyl-glucosaminidase, and α-L-fucosidase) were studied during the postnatal development of the rat cerebellum. Each glycosidase has a particular developmental pattern. Transient decreases in the specific activities of β-mannosidase, β-D-galactosidase, and β-D- N -acetyl-glucosaminidase could be correlated with the phase of massive cell multiplication. A possible more specific role for α-D-mannosidase is discussed.  相似文献

Breeding population sizes of penguins, fulmarine etrels and skuas were estimated for the first time on a major part of the Terre Adélie coast and a section of the King George V Land coast during the 1997/1998 austral summer. We counted 106,400 breeding pairs and 12,400 Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) chicks by direct counts, and 6960 breeding pairs from aerial photographs. Minimum breeding populations for other species are (direct counts): Antarctic fulmar (Fulmarus glacialoides) 6861 pairs, Antarctic petrel (Thalassoica antarctica) 4574 pairs, cape petrel (Daption capense) 194 pairs, snow petrel (Pagodroma nivea) 767 pairs, south polar skua (Catharacta maccormicki) 129 pairs and subantarctic skua (Catharacta lonnbergi) 1 breeding bird. We discovered 29 new seabird breeding locations in King George V Land, including 6 Antarctic fulmar, 4 Antarctic petrel, 3 cape petrel, 6 snow petrel and 10 south polar skua colonies. The largest colonies found contained up to 4205 breeding pairs of Antarctic fulmars. Population sizes of all species obtained in this study are higher than those found during previous partial surveys. Although these differences are in great part due to differences in survey methods, they also reflect real population changes. Our minimum population sizes obtained for a small portion of the Antarctic coast (<2%) suggest an underestimation of the estimated world breeding populations for several species of Antarctic seabirds. Six bacterial strains capable of using, as sole carbon and energy source, at least one of the following polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene and pyrene, were isolated. The interactions between these PAH during their biodegradation were studied in experiments involving PAH pairs, one PAH at least being used as a carbon source. All individual strains were found capable of cometabolic degradation of PAH in a range varying among strains. Inhibition phenomena, sometimes drastic, were often observed but synergistic interactions were also detected. Naphthalene was toxic to all strains not isolated on this compound. Strain associations were found efficient in relieving inhibition phenomena, including the toxic effect of naphthalene. Accumulation of water-soluble metabolites was consistently observed during PAH degradation.  相似文献

A 2.3 kb DNA fragment that contains a gene encoding endoinulinase, inu2, from Aspergillus ficuum ATCC 16882 was isolated and analyzed. It includes an open reading frame of 1,551 bp, coding for a polypeptide with calculated molecular weight of 55,790 Da, including a putative signal peptide of 22 amino acids. Alignment of amino acid sequences revealed 73.3% identity and 93.9% similarity between A. ficuum and Penicillium purpurogenum endoinulinase.  相似文献

The Southern Ocean provides one of the largest environmental gradients on Earth that lacks geographical barriers, and small but highly mobile petrels living there may offer fine models of evolution of diversity along environmental gradients. Using geolocation devices, we investigated the winter distribution of closely related petrel species breeding sympatrically in the southern Indian Ocean, and applied ecological niche models to compare environmental conditions in the habitat used. We show that thin-billed prions (Pachyptila belcheri), Antarctic prions (Pachyptila desolata) and blue petrels (Halobaena caerulea) from the Kerguelen archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean segregate latitudinally, sea surface temperature being the most important variable separating the distribution of the species. Antarctic prions spent the winter north of the Polar Front in temperate waters, whereas blue petrels were found south of the Polar Front in Antarctic waters. Thin-billed prions preferred intermediate latitudes and temperatures. Stable isotope values of feathers reflected this near complete niche separation across an ecological gradient that spans large scales, and suggest evolutionary isolation by environment. In pelagic seabirds that exploit large areas of ocean, spatial niche partitioning may not only facilitate coexistence among ecologically similar species, but may also have driven their evolution in the absence of geographical barriers.  相似文献

At the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the north‐eastern Indian Ocean >592 fishes from at least 11 species died in a series of events in December 2007, January and February 2008 and April 2009. The dead fishes were from a wide range of taxonomic families, indicating that conditions exceeded the tolerances of a broad array of species. The 2007–2008 die‐off events occurred on the warmest and calmest days of a significantly warmer and calmer summer. Fishes died in the southern inshore areas of the coral atoll lagoon at survey sites where seawater temperature was highest (33–35° C) and dissolved oxygen was lowest (1·4–1·8 mg l?1). The water temperature at these fish‐kill survey sites (33–35° C) was significantly warmer than previous years (1997 to 2005, mean ±s.e. = 28·7 ± 0·1° C). Fishes probably died because they were unable to obtain the additional oxygen required for metabolism at higher temperatures. Repeated die‐off events over the last 130 years indicate that some fishes have not yet adapted to rises in seawater temperature. This study provides empirical evidence to support suggestions that differences in physiological tolerances to increasing sea temperatures may be important in determining the structure of future coral‐reef fish communities with respect to climate change.  相似文献

Molecular karyotyping has revealed that microdeletions/duplications in the human genome are a major cause of multiple congenital anomalies associated with mental retardation (MCA/MR). The identification of a de novo chromosomal imbalance in a patient with MCA/MR is usually considered causal for the phenotype while a chromosomal imbalance inherited from a phenotypically normal parent is considered as a benign variation and not related to the disorder. Around 40% of imbalances in patients with MCA/MR in this series is inherited from a healthy parent and the majority of these appear to be (extremely) rare variants. As some of these contain known disease-causing genes and have also been found to be de novo in MCA/MR patients, this challenges the general view that such familial variants are innocent and of no major phenotypic consequence. Rather, we argue, that human genomes can be tolerant of genomic copy number variations depending on the genetic and environmental background and that different mechanisms play a role in determining whether these chromosomal imbalances manifest themselves.  相似文献
