Origanum onites, widely used as a spice, grows wild in southern and southeastern Greece, especially in phryganic ecosystems. Like other woody plants of these ecosystems, it is characterized by seasonal dimorphism, an adaptation to face the summer drought. Its range in Greece is defined, and the features of its volatile oil are studied. It appears to be a fairly stable species, both from the morphological and chemical point of view. The high yields in volatile oil and high contents of carvacrol from all populations studied suggest the possibility of further profitable exploitation.  相似文献

Worker and queen bees are genetically indistinguishable. However, queen bees are fertile, larger and have a longer lifespan than their female worker counterparts. Differential feeding of larvae with royal jelly controls this caste switching. There is emerging evidence that the queen-bee phenotype is driven by epigenetic mechanisms. In this study, we show that royal jelly--the secretion produced by the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of worker bees--has histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) activity. A fatty acid, (E)-10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10HDA), which accounts for up to 5% of royal jelly, harbours this HDACi activity. Furthermore, 10HDA can reactivate the expression of epigenetically silenced genes in mammalian cells. Thus, the epigenetic regulation of queen-bee development is probably driven, in part, by HDACi activity in royal jelly.  相似文献

The present study aims mainly at exploring the effects of a severe depletion in polyunsaturated long-chain omega3 fatty acids upon the fate of circulating lipids. The plasma concentration and fatty acid pattern of triglycerides, diglycerides, free fatty acids, and phospholipids were measured in omega3-depleted and control rats injected intravenously one hour before sacrifice with either saline, a control medium-chain triglyceride:olive oil emulsion or a medium-chain triglyceride:fish oil emulsion recently found to rapidly increase the phospholipid content of C20:5omega3 and C22:6omega3 in different cell types. The estimated fractional removal rate of the injected triglycerides and the clearance of free fatty acids from circulation were both higher in omega3-depleted rats than in control animals. The injection of the lipid emulsions apparently inhibited intracellular lipolysis, this being least pronounced in omega3-depleted rats. The increased clearance of circulating triglycerides and unesterified fatty acids in omega3-depleted rats may favor the cellular accumulation of lipids. In turn, such an accumulation and the lesser regulatory inhibition of tissular lipolysis may match the increased clearance of circulating unesterified fatty acids and, hence, account for the lack of any significant difference in plasma unesterified fatty acid concentration between these and control animals.  相似文献

Brain mapping in the freely moving animal is useful for studying motor circuits, not only because it avoids the potential confound of sedation or restraints, but because activated brain states may serve to accentuate differences that only manifest partially while a subject is in the resting state. Perfusion or metabolic mapping using autoradiography allows one to examine changes in brain function at the circuit level across the entire brain with a spatial resolution (100 μ) appropriate for the rat or mouse brain, and a temporal resolution (seconds–minutes) sufficient for capturing acute brain changes. Here we summarize the application of these methods to the functional brain mapping of behaviors involving locomotion of small animals, methods for the three-dimensional reconstruction of the brain from autoradiographic sections, voxel based analysis of the whole brain, and generation of maps of the flattened rat cortex. Application of these methods in animal models promises utility in improving our understanding of motor function in the normal brain, and of the effects of neuropathology and treatment interventions such as exercise have on the reorganization of motor circuits.  相似文献

The electrophoretic mobility of Leuconostoc mesenteroides is twice higher in the presence of 10g dextrans/1 than without dextrans. The electrophoretic mobilities are slightly higher during the early stationary phase than during the exponential phase. The osmotic force and the degree of space-occupancy are able to explain the evolution of electrophoretic mobilities in the presence of dextrans.  相似文献

AIMS: To assess the bacterial diversity and safety of wastewater inoculants, which are commercially available products used to improve the aerobic digestion processes of the domestic waste compost in the septic tank. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighteen wastewater inoculants were analysed on nonselective and selective media and the cultivable bacteria were identified. In all wastewater inoculants, the number of CFUs were between 10(4) and 10(7) g(-1) powder on nonselective media and Bacillus was the predominant cultivable genus. Culture-independent molecular methods such as sequencing of 16S rRNA clone libraries and denaturating gradient gel electrophoresis demonstrated the high prevalence of interfering chloroplast 16S rRNA from plant material and the presence of Bacillus spp. Only after selective enrichments and cultivation, the presence of one pathogenic strain (Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae) and one opportunistic strain of (Enterobacter cloacae) bacteria were detected in six different products. CONCLUSION: The predominant cultivable species of the wastewater inoculants were Bacillus spp. and after enrichment six products were found to contain opportunistic or pathogenic strains. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The presence of opportunistic pathogenic strains in the inoculants might represent a risk for immunocompromised, the elderly or children. A clear labelling should therefore be displayed on the product.  相似文献

Cadmium is found in the environment as part of several, mainly zinc-rich, ores. It has been used in many technological applications, but biological systems generally failed to safely deal with this element. In mammalian biology, cadmium exposure jeopardizes health and mechanisms of cadmium toxicity are multifarious. Mainly because bioavailable cadmium mimics other metals that are essential to diverse biological functions, cadmium follows a Trojan horse strategy to get assimilated. Metals susceptible to cadmium deceit include calcium, zinc, and iron. The wealth of data addressing cadmium toxicity in animal cells is briefly reviewed with special emphasis on disturbance of the homeostasis of calcium, zinc, and iron. A limited number of tissues and cell types are considered as main targets for cadmium toxicity. Still, the diversity of pathways affected by cadmium exposure points to a more general threat to basic cellular functions. The poor efficiency of cellular export systems for cadmium explains the long residence time of the element in mammals. Therefore, proper disposal and educated uses of this technologically appealing, but biologically malicious, element should be favored in the future. The comprehensive knowledge of cadmium biological effects is indeed a necessary step to protect human and animal populations from environmental and anthropological exposures.  相似文献

Considering the insufficient supply of long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids often prevailing in Western populations, this report deals mainly with alterations of Ca(2+) fluxes and Ca(2+)-dependent insulin secretory events in isolated pancreatic islets from omega-3-depleted rats. In terms of (45)Ca(2+) handling, the islets from omega-3-depleted rats, compared with those from normal animals, displayed an unaltered responsiveness to an increase in extracellular K(+) concentration, a lower inflow rate and lower fractional outflow rate of the divalent cation, and higher (45)Ca(2+)-labeled cellular pool(s) at isotopic equilibrium. The latter anomaly was corrected 120 min after intravenous injection of a novel medium-chain triglyceride-fish oil (MCT:FO) emulsion, distinct from a control omega-3-poor MCT-olive oil (MCT:OO) emulsion. At 8.3 mM D-glucose, insulin release was higher in islets from omega-3-depleted rats vs. control animals, coinciding with a higher cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration. The relative magnitude of the increase in insulin output attributable to a rise in D-glucose as well as extracellular Ca(2+) or K(+) concentration, to the absence vs. presence of verapamil and to the presence vs. absence of extracellular Ca(2+), theophylline, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, or Ba(2+), was always more pronounced in islets from omega-3-depleted rats injected with the MCT:OO compared with the MCT:FO emulsion. A comparable situation prevailed when comparing islets from noninjected omega-3-depleted and normal rats. In light of these and previous findings, we propose that an impairment of Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activity plays a major, although not an exclusive, role in the perturbation of Ca(2+) fluxes and Ca(2+)-dependent secretory events in the islets from omega-3-depleted rats.  相似文献

The origin of the symbiotic association between parasitoid wasps and bracoviruses is still unknown. From phylogenetic analyses, bracovirus-associated wasp species constitute a monophyletic group, the microgastroid complex. Thus all wasp-bracovirus associations could have originated from the integration of an ancestral virus in the genome of the ancestor of the microgastroids. In an effort to identify a set of virus genes that would give clues on the nature of the ancestral virus, we have recently performed the complete sequencing of the genome of CcBV, the bracovirus of the wasp Cotesia congregata. We describe here the putative proteins encoded by CcBV genome having significant similarities with sequences from known viruses and mobile elements. The analysis of CcBV gene content does not lend support to the hypothesis that bracoviruses originated from a baculovirus. Moreover, no consistent homology was found between CcBV genes and any set of genes constituting the core genome of a known free-living virus. We discuss the significance of the scarce homology found between proteins from CcBV and other viruses or mobile elements.  相似文献
