The objectives of this study were to establish standards for growth and to model the evolution of wither height (WH) between birth and adult age in different breeds of sport- and race-horses. Therefore, 398 foals, then yearlings of three different breeds, were measured regularly between birth and 18 months of age. Linear and non-linear functions were compared for describing the growth in each breed group. The monomolecular, Gompertz, logistic and cubic models correctly estimated WH in the three breeds during the first 2 years (R2 = 0.99, s.e. 3.9 to 4.5) and better than the cubic and quadratic models (R2 = 0.93, s.e. = 4.7 to 5.3). The logarithmic and power model seemed better in the last part of the growth period (2 to 6 years, R2 = 0.85, s.e. = 5.6 to 5.9). The linear model did not fit with data on most of the growth period. Comparison of the growth in the three breeds using these models confirmed that race-horses had an intense growth in their first months whereas sport-horses had a more regular growth prolonged in their first years of life.  相似文献

Vascular responses to adenine nucleotides in human corpora cavernosa from men with vasculogenic erectile dysfunction were investigated. We also evaluated the catabolism of extracellular adenine nucleotides to probe its relevance to vascular hemodynamics in impotent men. Human corpora cavernosa have high NTPDase1/CD39 activity, converting ATP directly into AMP, without significant ADP formation. Extracellular ATP hydrolysis is slower in impotent patients. Adenine nucleotides have dual roles on phenylephrine-contracted strips of corpora cavernosa operated by P2X-contractant and P2Y-relaxant receptors. Prolonged exposure to endogenous ATP related to decreased NTPDase1/CD39 activity leads to P2-purinoceptor desensitization in impotent men. Shutting down ATP signaling in vasculogenic impotent men may represent a defense mechanism for preventing purinergic overstimulation.  相似文献

Asian elephants are not self-sustaining in captivity. The main reasons for this phenomenon are a low birth rate, an aging population, and poor calf-rearing. Therefore, it is essential that reproductive rates had to be improved and there is need for rapid quantitative measures to monitor reproductive functions focussing on estrous detection and the prediction of the period of parturition. The objective of this study was to develop a method which combines headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for analyses of 5alpha-androst-2-en-17beta-ol and -17-one to prognose estrous and to predict the period of parturition. SPME was carried out with a CTC Combi Pal system.The course of the luteal phase-specific substance 5alpha-androst-2-en-17beta-ol and -17-one followed a cyclic pattern in which the follicular and luteal phases could be clearly distinguished (mean estrous cycle length, 15+/-1.4 weeks). Based on daily urine samples, estrous prognosis might be possibly based on the initial 5alpha-androst-2-en-17beta-o1 increase at the end of the follicular phase. Parturition prognosis was performed in three elephant cows based on the 5alpha-androst-2-en-17beta-o1 drop to baseline levels 5-4 days prior parturition. Experiments revealed that 5alpha-androst-3alpha-ol-17-one and probably 5alpha-androst-3alpha-ol-17beta-ol are generated from sulfate conjugates by a thermal process.  相似文献

The course of an infection with the microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi in a colony of captive emperor tamarins (Saguinus imperator) is described. In two litters, the infection was associated with overt disease and death of all infants. Immunohistochemistry for E. cuniculi showed generalized infections, and histopathologic evaluation revealed systemic vasculitis and disseminated mixed inflammatory cell infiltration with and without necrosis in several organs. Serologically, some of the juvenile animals presented with high titres for Encephalitozoon, while the adults had low titres. The E. cuniculi "dog strain" was identified by molecular means for the first time in Europe. The origin of the infection appeared to be a pair of breeding adults that originated from the US. Our data suggest that the organism persisted over years in the colony, and that subclinically infected animals most likely were involved in perpetuating the infection. Efforts should be made to ascertain if this microorganism is present in other captive populations of this endangered monkey species and to prevent its further spreading.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: S-attributed grammars (a generalization of classical Context-Free grammars) provide a versatile formalism for sequence analysis which allows to express long range constraints: the RNA folding problem is a typical example of application. Efficient algorithms have been developed to solve problems expressed with these tools, which generally compute the optimal attribute of the sequence w.r.t. the grammar. However, it is often more meaningful and/or interesting from the biological point of view to consider almost optimal attributes as well as approximate sequences; we thus need more flexible and powerful algorithms able to perform these generalized analyses. RESULTS: In this paper we present a basic algorithm which, given a grammar G and a sequence omega, computes the optimal attribute for all (approximate) strings omega(') in L(G) such that d(omega, omega(')) < or = M, and whose complexity is O(n(r + 1)) in time and O(n(2)) in space (r is the maximal length of the right-hand side of any production of G). We will also give some extensions and possible improvements of this algorithm.  相似文献

The amidolytic activity of plasmin (Pln) that spontaneously adsorbs from solutions to modified-graphite (GR) and glassy carbon (GL) surfaces was studied in the 10-45 degrees C temperature range in the presence of a chromogenic substrate. Surfaces were modified with a coating of fibrinogen, either electrochemically oxidized or not. The effect of an additional modification via deposition of Langmuir-Blodgett films of behenic acid (BA-LB) onto the former surfaces, thus leading to either hydrophobic or hydrophilic surfaces according to the number of deposed layers, was examined. In all cases results showed the occurrence of a first order transition which strongly and transiently increases the surface activity of Pln. At BA-LB surfaces, the most prominent change compared with other coatings was a significant enhancement of the critical temperature Tc that characterizes the beginning of the transition. When fibrinogen was present in the solution, the transition was no longer observable up to 37 degrees C as shown by the linear kinetics exhibited by surfaces bearing oxidized fibrinogen.  相似文献

Tomography emerges as a powerful methodology for determining the complex architectures of biological specimens that are better regarded from the structural point of view as singular entities. However, once the structure of a sufficiently large number of singular specimens is solved, quite possibly structural patterns start to emerge. This latter situation is addressed here, where the clustering of a set of 3D reconstructions using a novel quantitative approach is presented. In general terms, we propose a new variant of a self-organizing neural network for the unsupervised classification of 3D reconstructions. The novelty of the algorithm lies in its rigorous mathematical formulation that, starting from a large set of noisy input data, finds a set of "representative" items, organized onto an ordered output map, such that the probability density of this set of representative items resembles at its possible best the probability density of the input data. In this study, we evaluate the feasibility of application of the proposed neural approach to the problem of identifying similar 3D motifs within tomograms of insect flight muscle. Our experimental results prove that this technique is suitable for this type of problem, providing the electron microscopy community with a new tool for exploring large sets of tomogram data to find complex patterns.  相似文献

It has been shown that some cytochrome P450-dependent enzyme activities could present daily fluctuations, particularly CYP3A isoenzymes which are enhanced during the dark period. The aim of this study was to investigate whether age and photoperiodic conditions at different circadian stages could influence these fluctuations. Young mature (10 weeks) and old (22 months) Wistar rats were initially exposed to light-dark cycles 12:12 during 4 weeks, and secondly 18:6 for either one week or six weeks. Erythromycin N-demethylase (CYP3A-dependent), 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase (CYP1A-dependent) and aniline 4-hydroxylase (CYP2E-dependent) activities were determined in liver and kidney microsomes at different hours after darkness onset (HADO). In addition, liver and kidney GSH, GSHPx, ATP, TBARS were determined. During the LD 12:12 cycle, while no significant modification was observed in CYP1A- and 2E-dependent enzyme activities as functions of HADO, erythromycin N-demethylase activity (CYP3A-dependent) showed a significant increase during the second third of the dark period in both young and old rats. After switching to a LD 18:6 cycle, this variation was still observed during second third of the dark period, to a lesser but still significant degree, with no difference between one week and six weeks exposure to the new photoperiod. It can be noted that the old rats showed a significantly lower level of erythromycin N-demethylase activity than the young rats, in parallel to a decrease in GSH, GSHPx and ATP, and an increase in TBARS.These results confirm the lower resistance of old animals to oxidative stress. The observed variations in metabolism parameters underline the need for study designs in pharmaco-toxicology taking into account the possible risks induced by circadian changes, especially in aged subjects.  相似文献

Guanine nucleotide exchange factors for Rho-GTPases (Rho-GEFs) invariably share a catalytic Dbl-Homology (DH) domain associated with a Pleckstrin Homology (PH) domain, whose function in Rho-GEF activation is not well understood. Trio is the first member of an emerging family of Dbl proteins containing two Rho-GEF domains (GEFD1 and GEFD2). TrioGEFD1 activates the GTPases RhoG and Rac1, while TrioGEFD2 acts on RhoA. In this study, we have investigated the roles of the two PH domains of Trio in Rho-GEF activity. We show that TrioPH1 is required for GEFD1-mediated induction of actin cytoskeleton remodeling and JNK activation. TrioPH1 is involved both in the catalytic activity and in the subcellular localization of its associated DH domain, by acting as a cytoskeletal targeting signal. Moreover, TrioPH1 in association with DH2 activates the JNK pathway, by an unknown mechanism independent of DH2 catalytic activity. TrioPH2 does not behave as a targeting module in intact cells. TrioPH2 inhibits DH2-dependent stress fiber formation, which correlates with the TrioPH2-mediated inhibition of DH2 GEF activity. In addition, expression in the neuron-like PC12 cell line of the intact Trio protein deleted of each PH domain shows that only TrioPH1 is required for Trio-induced neurite outgrowth. Taken together, these data demonstrate that the two PH domains play a different role in the control of Trio Rho-GEF function.  相似文献
