The geographic zonation of the Recent World Ocean, as expressed by distribution of the surface water masses is reflected by latitudinal lithofacial belts and by planktonic foraminiferal assemblages. The lithofacies are controlled mainly by biological productivity and the microfossil assemblages are sensitive to sea-surface temperatures (SST). Migration of the latitudinal lithofacial belts and their boundaries during the Last Glaciation was inferred from displacement of the SST zones.  相似文献

Summary The segregation products of the Rb(6.16) translocation were studied at first cleavage metaphase. Male mice heterozygous for the translocation mated at 3- and 14-day intervals to superovulated random-bred ICR females. Chromosome preparations of the recovered one-cell embryos were sequentially G- and C-banded and male and female complements analyzed cytogenetically. Of the 309 zygotes analyzed from both mating groups, no unbalanced segregants of the translocation were observed. In the 3-day group there was a highly significant difference (P<0.001) from the expected 1:1 ratio between sperm with normal (70.5%) and balanced segregants (26.2%) of alternate segregation. In the 14-day group the level of significance for the difference was ten times lower (P<0.01) as normal segregants were observed in 56.4% of the sperm and balanced ones in 36.5%. A comparison of the two groups using a 2×2 contingency table showed that segregant type was related to mating frequency (P<0.05). There was a highly significant distortion (P<0.01) of the sex ratio, with 178 Y-bearing and 131 X-bearing sperm in the combined populations. When sex ratio was analyzed according to mating intervals, the distortion was significant (P<0.01) only for the 3-day group. An analysis of the sex ratio according to the segregant type showed no significant deviation from 1:1 for type 1 segregants, which had normal chromosomes, while type 2 segregants, with the translocation, had a deficiency of X-bearing sperm. This deficiency was significant (P<0.05) only for the 3-day population. Analysis of meiotic preparations showed no association between the translocation trivalent and the X-Y bivalent. Our results, obtained under physiological conditions, provide definitive evidence for sperm selection and support previous findings that aging of sperm can modify the effect of selection.  相似文献

Glycolate can be measured in the supernatant fraction after incubation of butyrate-grown cells of Rhodospirillum rubrum either colorimetrically by the Calkins method or enzymatically using glycolate oxidase. Under optimal conditions, half-maximal excretion occurs at 11% O2 and the maximal rate is 6.9 nmol of glycolate min-1 mg protein-1 at 30°C. The pH and temperature optima are 7.6 and 30°C and light intensity is saturating in the range of 2–10×104 lux. Carbon dioxide inhibits glycolate excretion and exogenous butyrate stimulates. Parasites are exploiting their host for the resources required for the parasite's reproduction and survival. The effects of antiparasitic treatment during incubation on body mass and return rate in female common eiders Somateria mollissima were examined in a two year study (1998 and 1999) . There was no effect of treatment on nest success, but unsuccessful females had lower body mass. Treatment had no effect on incubation time, mass-loss during incubation or return rate among successful birds. However, treatment lead to higher return rate among unsuccessful birds (treated=69%, n=13; controls=18%, n=11). This pattern remained significant also after including the birds that returned two years after the experiment. We suggest that the unsuccessful females are of lower quality and had higher costs from parasite infections than birds which completed incubation, and that the higher return rate for treated unsuccessful females may mean that costs of parasites are substantial, and that the potential fitness gain from investment in parasite defense and avoidance is large.  相似文献

Life histories are state-dependent, and an individual's reproductive decisions are determined by its available resources and the needs of its offspring. Here we test how a chick's needs for food and protection influence parental decisions in the Antarctic petrel, Thalassoica antarctica , where the parents, due to their long breeding lifespan, are expected to give priority to their own needs before those of the young. We exchanged one-day-old chicks with four-day-old chicks and studied how the parents subsequently provided care to the chick. The duration of the guarding period was adjusted, and parents left older chicks earlier and younger chicks later compared to controls. Three mechanisms were responsible for the adjustments. 1) Parents with an older chick co-ordinated fewer guarding spells whereas parents with a younger chick co-ordinated more guarding spells. 2) At the last guarding spell, i.e. where a parent left the chick alone before the partner returned, less time was spent with older chicks, and more time with younger chicks. 3) Foraging trip duration was shortened by parents given older chicks and prolonged by parents given younger chicks, probably in response to the chick's food demand. Hence, the parents responded quickly to the altered needs of the chick. Parents with high body mass guarded longer and were better able to co-ordinate the guarding spells compared to lighter parents. In conclusion, Antarctic petrels adjust reproductive decisions to their own, their mate's, and their chick's state, and they seem to respond to the chick's needs for both food and protection.  相似文献

Summary The following enzymes were studied histochemically in uterine and cervical epithelium from neonatal mice treated with 17-estradiol for the first four days after birth: NADH-, NADPH-, succinate-, -glycerophosphate-, lactate-, glucose-6-phosphate-, and 17-OH-steroid dehydrogenases.It was demonstrated that estradiol administration had a marked influence on distribution and activity of several of the enzymes compared with the control animals. In cervix there was an increase of activity for most of the enzymes, especially in the apical parts of the epithelium cells. The uterine epithelium was also estradiol sensitive as regards most enzymes, and in the case of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase there was a dramatic enhancement of reaction in the uterus of the experimental animals. Summary The present study deals with the histochemical demonstration of 17-estradiol dehydrogenase in human term placenta using the polyvinyl alcohol method to reduce diffusion artefacts. Incubations took place with both NAD+ and NADP+ as coenzymes and at different pH values of the incubation medium. The NAD+ linked enzyme reaction showed a greater activity than the NADP+ linked, both in the trophoblast as well as in connective tissue. There were differences in staining intensity at the different pH values, and strongest reaction was observed using glycine-NaOH buffer pH 10 in the incubation medium. Owing to a non-enzymatically reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium by reduced NAD+, the demonstration of 17-estradiol dehydrogenase is independent of diaphorase at this high pH. Together with Kupffer cells, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) constitute the most powerful scavenger system in the body. However, studies on LSEC function are hampered by the fact that the cells lose their scavenger ability and start deteriorating after a few days in culture. The purpose of the present study was to improve the conditions of cultivation to prolong the survival of pig LSECs in vitro. We used the high capacity receptor-mediated endocytosis of soluble waste molecules as a marker for functionally intact cells in the cultures. Compared with two commercially-, and two other media specifically designed for use with either SECs or hepatocytes from rat, our newly developed serum-free medium, DM 110/SS, devoid of any components of animal origin, was superior in maintaining the endocytic activity. Of six growth factors studied for their effect on endocytosis, basic fibroblast, and recombinant epidermal, but not vascular endothelial growth factor, were found to be most beneficial. After 8 days in DM 110/SS, LSECs maintained endocytosis via the scavenger receptor, mannose receptor, collagen alpha-chain receptor and the Fc-gamma receptor. All endocytosed ligands, except for aggregated IgG were degraded in 8-day-old cultures. Using the new medium, the cells endocytosed ligands for up to 20 days, and survived for at least an additional 10 days, albeit without the high endocytic activity typical of intact LSECs. Importantly, DNA synthesis in prolonged cultures of LSECs was observed only when maintained in DM 110/SS medium. In conclusion, we describe a protocol for the maintenance of LSECs in culture for the longest period yet reported.  相似文献
