Respiration rates of some greenhouse cultivated tropical and subtropical species

A comparative study of dark respiration and effects of high and low temperature on dark respiration in five greenhouse cultivated tropical and sub-tropical species was made. The respiration rates determined manometrically were low in all species. Respiration rates increased with increasing temperature. Low temperature treatment accelerated the rate of respiration at 25 °G except in two species. An attempt has been made to determine the critical and optimum temperature for these species. The respiratory behaviour of these species has been discussed with respect to their original habitats and prevailing environmental conditions.     

Involvement of the galactosyl-1-phosphate transferase encoded by the Salmonella enterica rfbP gene in O-antigen subunit processing.

rfbT of Salmonella enterica LT2 was previously thought, together with rfaL, to be involved in the ligation of polymerized O antigen to core-lipid A, and three mutants were known. We report the mapping of the mutations to rfbP, the galactosyl-1-phosphate transferase gene, which is now shown to encode a bifunctional protein. The mutations which have the former rfbT phenotype are referred to as rfbP(T). We also show that rfbP(T) mutants are not blocked in the ligation step as previously believed but in an earlier step, possibly in flipping the O-antigen subunit on undecaprenyl pyrophosphate from the cytoplasmic to periplasmic face of the cytoplasmic membrane.     

Purification and characterization of a gelatinase produced by fibroblasts from human gingiva

An endopeptidase which digests denatured collagen to small, dialysable fragments was purified 2675-fold from medium that had been conditioned by the culture of fibroblasts grown from explants of human gingiva. This enzyme was inhibited by chelating agents, but not by phenylmethylsulphonyl fluoride nor by N-ethylmaleimide, and is therefore probably a metalloproteinase. It showed no demonstrable activity against native collagen or ovalbumin, while alpha-casein was digested slowly, if at all. It therefore belongs to the group of enzymes which have been called tissue gelatinases. This gelatinase was secreted in a latent form or forms and could be activated by proteolysis with trypsin. The active enzyme had an apparent molecular weight of 69 000 (gel chromatography) or 72 000 (gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulphate) and an apparent isoelectric point of 4.15.     

Recipient competence in F''lac matings of Escherichia coli K-12.

We studied recipient mating ability in the presence of excess F'lac donors. Ninety-five percent of recipients were able to receive F'lac in 30-min matings. Competition between an F'-lac donor and an F'lac traI donor, which mobilized a ColE1 derivative (pML2), showed that each recipient mated with an average of two to three donors in 30 min. Experiments in which the competing donor was added at different times showed that some competition occurred throughout the 30-min mating period, which suggested that aggregate formation was spread over this time.     

"Pertussis toxin induces tachycardia and impairs the increase in blood pressure produced by alpha 2-adrenergic agonists"

Administration of purified pertussis toxin to rats induced persistent tachycardia, (observed in conscious rats but not after pithing); as little as 0.05 microgram/100 g produced a significant effect. Pertussis toxin-treatment did not affected the pressor response produced in the pithed rats by the alpha 2-adrenergic agonist methoxamine but markedly diminished the pressor effect of the alpha 2-adrenergic agonists clonidine and azepexole. A role of adenylate cyclase inhibition in the action of postsynaptic vascular alpha 2-adrenergic receptors is suggested.     

Leucostasis, an underestimated cause of death in leukaemia

Massive sludging of leukaemic cells in blood vessels is a frequent and often lethal complication of leukaemia. In a retrospective clinicopathological study on the causes of death in 52 patients with acute myeloid leukaemia and myeloproliferative disease, pulmonary leucostasis was found in 40% of the patients. In many of these patients the vessels of the heart, brain and testes were also involved. In search for signs and symptoms specific for leucostasis, the clinical records of the 21 patients with leucostasis (the study group) were compared to those of 20 patients without leucostasis (the control group). Dysfunction of the organs most affected by leucostasis, namely lungs, heart and brain, was found more often in the study group than in the controls, but the combination of unexplained fever with cardiopulmonary and/or central nervous system failure occurred almost exclusively and in half of the patients with leucostasis. Leucostasis occurs predominantly, but not exclusively, in patients with high leucocyte counts, and especially, but again not exclusively, when the leucocyte counts rise sharply.
