CONSTRICTING ESOPHAGEAL LESIONS—Colon Interposition for Replacement,Combined With Radiotherapy for Carcinoma

The use of colon for esophageal replacement is a procedure that should be considered in the treatment of benign and malignant esophageal lesions. The five-year survival data following operations for carcinoma of the esophagus are not outstanding. The combination of colon transplantation and radiotherapy before and after operation is a procedure that should be utilized if an effort is to be made to increase the survival rate.     

Root exudates of plants

Summary The composition of the root exudates of barley and wheat in the initial growth phases was investigated; amino acids, organic acids, sugars and certain aromatic compounds could be identified. A knowledge of the composition of root exudates is important from the standpoint of the interaction between the plants and the micro-organisms in the rhizosphere. Some aspects of the rhizosphere effect connected with the present work are discussed.     

Enzymes of the jejunal enterochromaffine cells in man

Summary A study of enzymatic equipment of enterochromaffine cells (e.c.) in jenual biopsies obtained with a Crosby capsule in normal humans and patients with nontropical sprue was undertaken. The following enzymes were demonstrated: alkaline phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase (cell membrane), acid phosphatase (corpuscular), non-specific esterase (diffuse and corpuscular, predominantly eserine resistant, in corpuscular localization E 600 resistant), DPN- and TPN-diaphorases and dehydrogenases of lactic acid, malic acid, isocitric acid, glucoso-6-phosphoric acid, succinic acid, -hydroxybutyric acid and -glycerophosphoric acid. Enzyme activities were not equal in all cells suggesting some type of secretory cycle. In most patients with untreated nontropical sprue or with the disease in relapse e.c. were more numerous and hypertrophic with elevated activities of non-specific esterase and acid phosphatase. METHOD FOR COMBINED ULTRASTRUCTURAL AND BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF NEURAL TISSUE

No significant change was found in the electrolytes and lipids of the brain analyzed after glutaraldehyde fixation by perfusion of laboratory animals; such fixation also satisfactorily preserves neural tissues for electron microscopy. The brains of normal and tumor-bearing C3H mice, Wistar rats, and New Zealand rabbits were studied. Little difference was found in the dry weight and the content of sodium, potassium, total lipid and lipid fractions, and in the sulfate space (S³⁵O₄) between specimens from unperfused and perfused animals, whether normal or tumor-bearing. The results suggest the possibility of using selected regions of the nervous system, dissected after fixation, for chemical study and at the same time characterizing similar regions morphologically with the electron microscope.

Three fluorescent probes for the flow-cytometric assessment of membrane potential inSaccharomyces cerevisiœ

Three fluorescent probes, tetramethyl rhodamine ethyl ester (TMRE), 3,3′-dipropylthiacarbocyanine iodide (diS-C₃(3)) and 3,3′-dipropyloxacarbocyanine iodide (diO-C₃(3)), were tested for their suitability as fluorescent indicators of membrane potential inSaccharomyces cerevisiœ in studies performed by flow cytometry. For all these dyes the intensity of fluorescence of stained cells increased with probe concentration in the range of 60–3000 nmol/L. The optimum staining period was 15–20 min for diS-C₃(3). Depolarization of cells by increased extracellular potassium level and by valinomycin elicited with all probes a drop in fluorescence intensity. In some yeast batches this depolarization was accompanied by a separation of subpopulations with different fluorescence properties.     

Letters to the metanarrative: Totalitarian “enjoyment” and self representation in postcommunist Serbia

Conclusion This outline of the instrumentality of the technology/technique of representation in postcommunist Serbia is but a brief attempt to address the modes of production of identity in postmodernism, its legitimation in/of dominant discourse, and their embedding in common sense language and practice. Postcommunist Serbia is obviously a special situation:²³ a particular case of the social appropriation and construction of enjoyment and desire, intimately related to the desires and various enjoyments of the members of the community, precarious in its collective affirmation. Based on the idea of contingent collectivity, faction-fiction, in its meta-critique seems to signal the emergence of a new régime in the relation between historical reality and its representation in historical narratives.This new régime, obviously, cannot be exhaustively (or even extensively) discussed in a brief paper like this one. Nevertheless, some (three) points of departure for the general discussion of postmodern modes of representation are still possible. One such point of departure is the contingence of representation, another the apparent paradigmatic similarity between trash talk-shows and Echoes and Reactions.
