Monoclonal antibodies to antigens found on the neutrophils, activated T-lymphocytes and blast cells in human acute leukemia

Two hybridomas secreting mouse cytotoxic monoclonal antibodies to in vivo and in vitro activated human T-lymphocyte and neutrophil surface membrane antigenic determinants have been produced. One of these monoclonal antibodies (Ta/H-2) appeared to be also specifically reactive to blast cells in the majority of non-T-non-B and T acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients.     

Tiron as a spin-trap for superoxide radicals produced by the respiratory chain of submitochondrial particles

Tiron can be used as a spin-trap for O2 radicals generated by the respiratory chain of submitochondrial particles (SMP). Using this sensitive method, it was shown that the O2 (radical) production by the succinate-oxidizing SMP can be reduced by antimycin or 4-nonyl-2-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide, the effects of both antibiotics being abolished and prevented by cyanide. It is suggested tht the O2 radicals are produced due to autooxidation of ubisemiquinone which is formed as an intermediate upon one-electron oxidation of CoQH2 by cytochrome c1. The effects of antimycin, 2-nonyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide and cyanide on the O2 (radical) generation correlate with the effects of these inhibitors on a steady-state concentration of ubisemiquinone predicted by the Mitchell's Q-cycle hypothesis.     

The resistance of muscle larvae of Trichinella spiralis to exposure to low temperatures]

It has been shown that the resistance of muscular larvae of Trichinella spiralis to the effect of low temperatures depends on the conditions of freezing and composition of media possessing cryoprotective properties. It has been established that under optimal conditions (medium of microenvironment, conditions of freezing) during the storage in liquid nitrogen muscular larvae of T. spiralis preserve 50 to 60% of their resistance by the character of mobility and 11 to 15% by their capacity for reproduction. The question of creation of low-temperature bank for Trichinella is discussed.     

Analysis of cytoskeleton structural changes in the granular cells of the frog bladder during the stimulation of water transport

Structural changes of the cytoskeleton of the frog urinary bladder granular cells were examined during low and high water permeability of the epithelium. A tight connection of the microfilaments and microtubules with vacuolar membranes and a great increase in the number of microtubules during a stimulated water flow was shown using different electron microscopic methods. Two populations of microtubules were discovered, respectively, with different diameter and different rate of stability. It is suggested that the thicker microtubules while interacting with actin microfilaments through associated electron dense globules may fulfil the transport function in the cell.     

Genetic determination of the vibriocinogenicity trait in Vibrio cholerae of the El Tor biotype

In two different strains of cholera vibrios two recA-dependent plasmids, pVib I (1.9-2.2 Md) and pVib II (5.2-5.8 Md), have been detected. These plasmids determine the synthesis of vibriocin, coagulase and fibrinolysin, which has been established by the cotransformation of the DNA of plasmids pVib I and pBR322 and by the transfer mobilization with the use of plasmid RP4.     

Population analysis of minor hemoglobin fractions. I. Hemoglobin A2]

The inhabitants of 7 isolated villages (of different nationalities) and of 5 panmictic populations were studied. Populational and segregation analyses of Hb A2 in 3036 normal and 150 heterozygous individuals for beta- and delta beta-thalassemia were carried out. The Hb A2 levels in some populations are established to deviate from the normal distribution. Bimodal dependency of the levels of Hb A2 distribution is demonstrated, which suggests the existance of heterogenous subpopulations by the Hb A2 level. The segregation analysis has revealed distinct genetic determination of Hb A2 levels. There was a good correlation between Hb A2 and Hb F values (r=-0.82).
