The Enemy hypothesis is a theoretical framework for understanding the adaptive nature of galls induced in host plants by insects. Contrary to other gall inducing insects, like Cynipids or sawflies, this hypothesis has not been studied for the gall aphids on pistachio trees in the Middle East. Galls on plants are supposed to protect their inducers from other organisms, including herbivores feeding on the host plant and possibly feeding on the gall tissue. Assuming that among aphid enemies there are numerous insects which have to perforate the gall wall to access the aphids inside, determining whether the gall wall has anti-insect properties should be one of the first steps in dealing with this hypothesis. In the present research using Baizongia pistaciae [L.], an aphid that creates perfectly closed galls in Pistacia palaestina Boiss, laboratory experiments were first conducted on a herbivore, the stored grain pest, Tribolium castaneum Herbst, to assess chemical anti-insect activities of the gall tissue, and an effort was made to understand why these properties do not harm the aphids inside the gall. Addition of fresh gall tissue to food reduced the population growth of flour beetles. Non-polar organic extracts had contact toxicity for larvae of these insects, and an impact on the feeding preferences of the adults. These results indicate chemical anti-insect activities of the gall tissue. The research also reveals that the permeability of the gall wall to non-polar volatile compounds is important to the survival of the aphids inside the gall cavity. These findings do not allow us to reject the Enemy hypothesis in the gall-inducing aphids/Pistacia trees interactions. 相似文献

A CO2 concentrating mechanism has been identified in the phycoerythrin-possessing Synechococcus sp. WH7803 and has been observed to be severely inhibited by short exposure to elevated light intensities. A light treatment of 300–2000 μmol quanta·m?2·s?1 resulted in a considerable decay in the variable fluorescence of PSII with time, suggesting decreased efficiency of energy transfer from the phycobilisomes, direct damage to the reaction center II, or both. Measurements of the activity of PSII and changes in fluorescence emission spectra during a light treatment of 1000 μmol quanta·m?2·s?1 indicated considerable reduction in the energy flow from the phycocyanin to the phycobilisome terminal acceptor and chlorophyll a. Consequently, whereas the maximal photosynthetic rate, at saturating light and Co2 concentration, was hardly affected by a light treatment of 1000 μmol quanta·m?2·s?1 for 2 h, the light intensity required to reach that maximum increased with the duration of the light treatment. 相似文献

Introduction
Higher levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) subfractions HDL3-chol and particularly HDL2-chol protect against cardiovascular disease (CVD), but inflammation reduces the HDL level and may impair its anti-atherogenic effect. Changed HDL composition through the impact of inflammation on HDL subfractions may contribute to the excess risk of CVD in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study, we investigated whether HDL2-chol and HDL3-chol concentrations differ between RA patients and healthy controls, and whether these levels are related to the level of RA disease activity.Methods
Non-fasting blood samples were collected from 45 RA patients and 45 healthy controls. None of the participants had a history of CVD, diabetes, or used lipid-lowering drugs. HDL2-chol and HDL3-chol concentrations were obtained by ultracentrifugation. Regression modeling was used to compare HDL subfraction levels between RA patients and healthy controls, and to analyze the effect of disease activity on HDL2-chol and HDL3-chol.Results
HDL2-chol and HDL3-chol were significantly lower in RA patients compared to healthy controls (P = 0.01, P = 0.005, respectively). The HDL2:HDL3 ratio was significantly lower in patients compared to controls (P = 0.04). Reduced HDL2-chol and HDL3-chol levels were primarily present in female RA patients and not in male RA patients. A modest effect of the disease activity score in 28 joins ( DAS28) on HDL2-chol concentrations was found, after correction for disease duration, glucocorticosteroid use and body mass index (BMI), with a 0.06 mmol/L decrease with every point increase in DAS28 (P = 0.05). DAS28 did not significantly affect HDL3-chol concentrations (P = 0.186).Conclusions
Both HDL subfractions but particularly HDL2-chol concentrations were decreased in RA, primarily in women. This seems to be associated with disease activity and is of clinical relevance. The reduction of the HDL subfraction concentrations, particularly the supposedly beneficial HDL2-chol, may negatively impact the cardiovascular risk profile of women with RA. 相似文献157.
Protecting insects in agro-ecosystems may result in substantial benefits assuming that numerous species produce ecological services. The impact of pesticides on non-target insects is a function of the number of treatments, chemical product, amount of active ingredients and the method of application in the fields, together with their persistence in the environment. To reduce the use of these products, several methods of integrated pest management were developed in agriculture. Among them mating-disruption (MD) is widely employed, for example against the codling moth Cydia pomonella L., a key pest in apple orchards. MD should minimize the negative impacts of chemical pest management on non-target insects in the vegetation surrounding the orchards. We investigated this hypothesis in a long-term MD program on insect populations in the edges of managed plots, using five gall-inducing aphid species in 135 Pistacia palaestina trees. The highest aphid species richness was found in trees growing away from orchards followed by trees in orchards close to Kiwi patches which were never sprayed with insecticides. Intermediate aphid species richness was revealed in parcels where MD against codling moth has been carried out during the last 18?years. In these plots, reduced number of chemical treatments was used against secondary pests each year. Trees in orchards with intensive chemical treatment with insecticide had almost no galls. In conclusion, the populations of the five non-target species in the adjacent natural environment did not suffer significantly from the few chemical treatments. This special section of Ecological Complexity includes four papers that represent the use of microsimulation to study environmental problems. In the opening paper, we focus on the problem of environmental microsimulation (EMS) evaluation. We claim that the backbone of EMS lies in the developer's ability to capture the mechanisms that govern real-world dynamics and propose to substitute the real world by its virtual copy to investigate this ability. Namely, we shall employ EMS at a certain “likelihood” resolution and consider the unlimited data set generated by the model as a surrogate of reality. One can then sample this virtual world and investigate whether the methods of data analysis, model formulation, parameter estimation and model calibration, employed for the analysis of the real world, are sufficient to reveal à priori known mechanisms. Abstract: The effect of encapsulation on the virulence, survival, and protection of anaerobic bacteria from phagocytosis is reviewed. Support for the importance of encapsulated Gram-negative anaerobic rods ( Bacteroides sp., Prevotella sp. and Porphyromonas sp.), anaerobic and facultative Gram-positive cocci (AFGPC) was provided by their higher recovery rate in oropharyngeal infections, abscesses and blood, compared to their number in the normal flora. The pathogenicity of Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Clostridium , and AFGPC was studied by inoculating them into mice and observing their ability to induce subcutaneous abscesses. Encapsulated Bacteroides, Fusobacteria , and AFGPC generally induced abscesses, whereas non-encapsulated organisms did not. However, many of the strains that had only a minimal number of encapsulated organisms (< 1%) survived in the abscesses, and they became heavily encapsulated when inoculated with other viable or non-viable encapsulated bacteria. Thereafter, these strains were able to induce abscesses when injected alone. Encapsulated Gram-negative anaerobic rods and AFGPC-induced bacteraemia and translocation, and increased the mortality of the infected animals more often than did the non-encapsulated form of the same strains. As determined by using selective antimicrobial therapy and quantitative cultures of abscesses induced in mice, possession of a capsule generally made Gram-negative anaerobic rods more important than their aerobic counterparts. Synergistic potentials were seen between encapsulated Gram-negative anaerobic rods and all tested aerobic bacteria and most AFGPC, and also between most AFGPC and Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Staphylococcus aureus .
