Retrospective of diatom diversity dynamics in thanatocenoses under climate change

The species diversity of planktonic diatoms in thanatocenoses of bottom sediments in Lake Bol’shoe Miassovo (Southern Urals) has been studied and a reconstruction of the thermal regime of the lake for the last 1000 years is made. It is established that the restructuring of the diatom assemblage and decrease in species diversity in thanatocenoses are caused by rapid climate warming that began in the 19th century in the Southern Urals.     

Effect of lysozyme on the growth of murine lymphoma and antineoplastic activity of cyclophosphamide]

It was shown that hen egg-white lysozyme (LM) in the dose 100 mg/kg under the daily intragastral use slightly inhibited tumor grown or did not influence significantly upon it and did not change antitumor activity of cyclophosphamide. When used at mice C57Bl/6J with the transplanted ascitic or solid T-cell lymphoma EL4 (syngeneic system). On model of the same tumors in ascitic form at mice-hybrids (C57Bl/6J x DBA2)F1 (semisingeneic system) LM significantly potentiates antitumor activity of cyclophosphamide, though it had no effect on the rate of tumor growth. Potentiation of the effect of cyclophosphamide revealed itself in more slow development of ascite, increased mean life-span and the overall survival, appearance of completely cured animals. Our clinic-laboratory studies have revealed a sharp deficit of endogenic lysozyme in the blood serum of leukemic patients and extremely low lysozyme content in lavage liquid, from leukemic patients, with pneumonia. These data suggest that LM can be useful as a food additive in the complex treatment of oncological patients for enhancing antineoplastic chemotherapy efficacy.     

Conformational properties of neuromedin NmU-8 and its modified analogs

The comparative study of the spatial organization and conformational properties of NmU-8 neuropeptide and its modified analogs with available experimental data has been carried out. The effect of amino acids point mutation on conformational states of native neuropeptide has been discussed. The low-energy conformations responsible for neuropeptide contractile activity was revealed.     

Architectonics of the vascular bed of the fetal portion of the mature human placenta (based on data of scanning electron microscopy)

Peculiarities of the microangioarchitectonics in the trunks, intermediate and terminal villi of the placenta have been described at a noncomplicated pregnancy. Signs of neovasculogenesis are demonstrated in the microcirculatory bed of the terminal villi. Possible connection between reduction of the paravasal capillary network, as the intermediate villi become mature, and neovasculogenesis is discussed.     

The influence of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation of the 10-meter range on morphological and functional indices on Daphnia magna straus

The effects of continuous and amplitude-shift-keying low-intensity electromagnetic field (EMF) of the 10-m range with on–off cycling on fertility, offspring quality, and linear body size was studied in the planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna. Single exposure of 1-day-old crustaceans was shown to affect their reproductive characteristics, causing fetal abnormalities in the offspring and the linear dimensions of the body.

     

Expression system for <Emphasis Type="Italic">Yarrowia lipolytica</Emphasis> based on a promoter of the mitochondrial potential-dependent porin VDAC gene

In this study, we designed an expression system for the Y. lipolytica yeast, which can be fully efficient in media with non-standard industrial ingredients. Previously, we reported that the mitochondrial Voltage Dependent Anion Channel (VDAC) was a major protein overproduced in the Yarrowia lipolytica yeast in an alkaline (pH = 9.0) culture medium. In this study, the VDAC promoter was cloned and tested using a reporter system based on the LacZ gene. Naturally, the VDAC gene contains an intron located just within the ATG translation initiation codon. The VDAC promoter V2 variant with the intron and V3 variant without the intron were studied. The VDAC-driven clones exhibited high variability of the expression profile. Some clones were more active than the clones induced by the artificial hp4d promoter, when grown in both complete and low-cost industrial ingredient (10% fish and sunflower meal) containing media. The new expression system may greatly expand the range of recombinant producers of feed enzymes and some other types of fodder additives in the Y. lipolytica yeast, appropriate for assimilation of low-cost and non-standard raw material.
