We evaluated 27 prairie grass species thought to be among those dominant 200 yr ago in the northern midwest as larval hosts of the northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica barberi Smith and Lawrence. Maize (Zea mays L.), spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) were included as controls for a total of 30 species. Twenty pots of each species were planted in a randomized complete block design. Each pot was infested 5 wk later with 20 neonate northern corn rootworm larvae. Two pots within each species and block were assigned an extraction date of 7 or 14 d after infestation. The remaining two pots from each block were used to monitor adult emergence. The percentage of larvae recovered, change in larval head capsule width, and change in average dry weights varied significantly among the grass species. The highest percentage of larvae was recovered from slender wheatgrass, Elymus trachycaulus (Link), and this was significantly greater than the percentage recovered from all other species including maize for the 14-d sample date. Several additional species were also relatively good hosts, in that the percentage of larvae recovered from these species was not significantly different from maize. The average dry weight of larvae recovered was significantly greater for larvae recovered from maize than for larvae recovered from all other species except slender wheatgrass, when the two samples dates were combined. Overall, adults were produced from only 6 of the 28 species evaluated, and no analysis was performed because of the low numbers. The results of this study are discussed in relation to the potential of alternate hosts of northern corn rootworm to serve as a bridge to survival on transgenic maize. 相似文献
AMPA receptors mediate the majority of excitatory glutamatergic transmission in the mammalian brain and are heterotetramers composed of GluA1-4 subunits. Despite genetic studies, the roles of the subunits in synaptic transmission and plasticity remain controversial. To address this issue, we investigated the effects of cell-specific removal of GluA1 in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons using virally-expressed GluA1 shRNA in organotypic slice culture. We show that this shRNA approach produces a rapid, efficient and selective loss of GluA1, and removed?>?80% of surface GluA1 from synapses. This loss of GluA1 caused a modest reduction (up to 57%) in synaptic transmission and when applied in neurons from GluA3 knock-out mice, a similar small reduction in transmission occurred. Further, we found that loss of GluA1 caused a redistribution of GluA2 to synapses that may compensate functionally for the absence of GluA1. We found that LTP was absent in neurons lacking GluA1, induced either by pairing or by a theta-burst pairing protocol previously shown to induce LTP in GluA1 knock-out mice. Our findings demonstrate a critical role of GluA1 in CA1 LTP, but no absolute requirement for GluA1 in maintaining synaptic transmission. Further, our results indicate that GluA2 homomers can mediate synaptic transmission and can compensate for loss of GluA1.

The objective of this study is to update evidence‐based best practice guidelines for psychological evaluation and treatment of weight loss surgery (WLS) patients. We performed a systematic search of English‐language literature on WLS and mental health, quality of life, and behavior modification published between April 2004 and May 2007 in MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library. Key words were used to narrow the search for a selective review of abstracts, retrieval of full articles, and grading of evidence according to systems used in established evidence‐based models. Our literature search identified 17 articles of interest; 13 of the most relevant were reviewed in detail. From these, we developed evidence‐based best practice recommendations on the psychological assessment and treatment of WLS patients. Regular updates of evidence‐based recommendations for best practices in psychological care are required to address the impact of mental health on short‐ and long‐term outcomes after WLS. Key factors in patient safety include comprehensive preoperative evaluation, use of appropriate and reliable evaluation instruments, and the development of short‐ and long‐term treatment plans. 相似文献
Axl has been a target of interest in the oncology field for several years based on its role in various oncogenic processes. To date, no wild-type Axl crystal structure has been reported. Herein, we describe the structure-based optimization of a novel chemotype of Axl inhibitors, 1H-imidazole-2-carboxamide, using a mutated kinase homolog, Mer(I650M), as a crystallographic surrogate. Iterative optimization of the initial lead compound (1) led to compound (21), a selective and potent inhibitor of wild-type Axl. isomorphous to the three-coordinated Bethe lattice. The three-dimensional representation of phenylacetylene dendrimer shows
a globular architecture with large voids and niches in its interior, characteristic of hyperbolic surfaces. This work investigates
the geometrical scaling behavior of this starburst dendrimer using the symmetry properties of a Bethe lattice embedded in
the hyperbolic plane. The results for C1134H1146 provide its density profile and an upper bound for its macromolecular size.
