Climate change and West Nile fever (WNV) are both subjects of global importance. Many mosquitoes and the diseases they carry,
including West Nile virus (WNV), are sensitive to temperature increase. The current study analyzes the lag correlations between
weather conditions (especially air temperature) and 1) Culex pipiens mosquito population abundance, and 2) WNF frequency in humans, between 2001 and 2005 in Israel. These 5 years follow a long
period with a documented tendency for temperature increase in the hot season in the country. Monthly anomalies of minimum
and maximum temperatures, relative seasonal rainfall contribution, mosquito samplings (hazard level), and WNF cases (hospital
admission dates and patients’ addresses) were analyzed. Logistic regression was calculated between the climatic data and the
mosquito samples, as Spearman correlations and Pearson cross-correlations were calculated between daily temperature values
(or daily precipitation amounts) and the hospital admission dates. It was found that the disease appearance reflects the population
distribution, while the risk tends to escalate around the metropolis characterized by an urban heat island. Positive anomalies
of the temperature during the study period appear to have facilitated the mosquito abundance and, consequently, the disease
emergence in humans. An important finding is the potential influence of extreme heat in the early spring on the vector population
increase and on the disease’s appearance weeks later. Awareness of such situations at the beginning of the spring may help
authorities to reduce the disease risk before it becomes a real danger. 相似文献

The traditional 30-second Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) is a widely used anaerobic power assessment protocol. An abbreviated protocol has been shown to decrease the mild to severe physical discomfort often associated with the WAnT. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether a 20-second WAnT protocol could be used to accurately predict power values of a standard 30-second WAnT. In 96 college females, anaerobic power variables were assessed using a standard 30-second WAnT protocol. Maximum power values as well as instantaneous power at 10, 15, and 20 seconds were recorded. Based on these results, stepwise regression analysis was performed to determine the accuracy with which mean power, minimum power, 30-second power, and percentage of fatigue for a standard 30-second WAnT could be predicted from values obtained during the first 20 seconds of testing. Mean power values showed the highest level of predictability (R2 = 0.99) from the 20-second values. Minimum power, 30-second power, and percentage of fatigue also showed high levels of predictability (R2 = 0.91, 0.84, and 0.84, respectively) using only values obtained during the first 20 seconds of the protocol. An abbreviated (20-second) WAnT protocol appears to effectively predict results of a standard 30-second WAnT in college-age females, allowing for comparison of data to published norms. A shortened test may allow for a decrease in unwanted side effects associated with the traditional WAnT protocol. 相似文献

This study was designed to investigate the effects of combination oral contraceptive agents (OCAs) on strength and torque production in collegiate women softball and water polo athletes who participated in a 12-week strength development program. A double-blind research design was used to mask subjects to the main outcome of interest. Thirty-one women collegiate softball and water polo players were divided into experimental (OCA users, n = 13), and control (non-OCA users, n = 18) groups. All subjects participated in the same supervised 12-week preseason strength development program. One-repetition maximum bench press (1RMBP), 10-repetition maximum leg extension (10RMLE), isokinetic peak torque bench press (IKBP), and isokinetic peak torque leg extension (IKLE) data were collected at weeks 0 (pre-test), 4, 8, and 12 (post-test). Significant increases in strength and torque production over time were identified regardless of group for 1RMBP, 10RMLE, and IKLE. No significant differences in IKBP torque production occurred during the 12-week strength training program. No significant differences in 1RMBP, 10RMLE, IKBP, or IKLE occurred between the OCA users and the non-OCA users groups. It was concluded that, within the limitations of the study, the use of combination OCAs did not provide sufficient androgenic effect to increase strength gains beyond the stimulus of the training protocol. 相似文献

Estrogen receptor (ER) ligands that are able to prevent postmenopausal bone loss, but have reduced activity in the uterus and the mammary gland might be of great value for hormone therapy. It is well established that the classical ER can activate genomic as well as nongenomic signal transduction pathways. In this study, we analyse the in vivo behaviour of ER ligands that stimulate nongenomic ER effects to the same extent as estradiol, but show clearly reduced activation of genomic ER effects in vitro. Using different readout parameters such as morphological changes, cellular proliferation, and target gene induction, we are able to demonstrate that ER ligands with reduced genomic activity in vitro show a better dissociation of bone versus uterine and mammary gland effects than estradiol that stimulates genomic and nongenomic effects to the same extent. We conclude that pathway-selective ER ligands may represent an interesting option for hormone therapy. 相似文献

The two most damaging biotypes of Bemisia tabaci, B and Q, have both evolved strong resistance to the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid. The major mechanism in all samples investigated so far appeared to be enhanced detoxification by cytochrome P450s monooxygenases (P450s). In this study, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology using degenerate primers based on conserved P450 helix I and heme-binding regions was employed to identify P450 cDNA sequences in B. tabaci that might be involved in imidacloprid resistance. Eleven distinct P450 cDNA sequences were isolated and classified as members of the CYP4 or CYP6 families. The mRNA expression levels of all 11 genes were compared by real-time quantitative RT-PCR across nine B and Q field-derived strains of B. tabaci showing strong resistance, moderate resistance or susceptibility to imidacloprid. We found that constitutive over-expression (up to approximately 17-fold) of a single P450 gene, CYP6CM1, was tightly related to imidacloprid resistance in both the B and Q biotypes. Next, we identified three single-nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers in the intron region of CYP6CM1 that discriminate between the resistant and susceptible Q-biotype CYP6CM1 alleles (r-Q and s-Q, respectively), and used a heterogeneous strain to test for association between r-Q and resistance. While survivors of a low imidacloprid dose carried both the r-Q and s-Q alleles, approximately 95% of the survivors of a high imidacloprid dose carried only the r-Q allele. Together with previous evidence, the results reported here identify enhanced activity of P450s as the major mechanism of imidacloprid resistance in B. tabaci, and the CYP6CM1 gene as a leading target for DNA-based screening for resistance to imidacloprid and possibly other neonicotinoids in field populations. 相似文献

We investigated the differential responses of invasive alien Lemna minuta and native Lemna minor to nutrient loading as well as the mechanism of competition between the species. The role of nutrients, species identity, species influence in determining the outcome of competition between the species was estimated using the Relative Growth Rate Difference (RGRD) model. The two species differed in their response to nutrient loading. The native L. minor responded indifferently to nutrient loading. The species Relative Growth Rate (RGR) was 0.10 d−1, 0.11 d−1 and 0.09 d−1 in high, medium and low nutrients, respectively. On the other hand, the invasive L. minuta responded opportunistically to high nutrient availability and had an RGR of 0.13 d−1, 0.10 d−1 and 0.08 d−1 in high, medium and low nutrients, respectively. As a result, the invasive species was dominant in high nutrient availability but lost to the native species at low nutrient availability. The invader formed approximately 60% and less than 50% of the stand final total dry biomass in high and low nutrient availability, respectively. Species RGR were reduced by both intra- and interspecific competition but intraspecific effects were stronger than interspecific effects. On the overall, the species significantly differed in their constant RGR. These differences in RGR between the species (species identity) and the differential response to nutrient loading were the main determinant of change in final biomass composition of these species in mixture. Species influence (competition) only had a small influence on the outcome of competition between the species. The observed species response to nutrient loading could be targeted in management of the invasive species. Lowering nutrients can be proposed to reduce the impact of the invasive L. minuta. 相似文献

In this study, differential gene expression between normal human mammary epithelial cells and their malignant counterparts (eight well established breast cancer cell lines) was studied using Incyte GeneAlbum 1-6, which contains 65,873 cDNA clones representing 33,515 individual genes. 3,152 cDNAs showed a > or =3.0-fold expression level change in at least one of the human breast cancer cell lines as compared with normal human mammary epithelial cells. Integration of breast tumor gene expression data with the genes in the tumor suppressor p53 signaling pathway yielded 128 genes whose expression is altered in breast tumor cell lines and in response to p53 expression. A hierarchical cluster analysis of the 128 genes revealed that a significant portion of genes demonstrate an opposing expression pattern, i.e. p53-activated genes are down-regulated in the breast tumor lines, whereas p53-repressed genes are up-regulated. Most of these genes are involved in cell cycle regulation and/or apoptosis, consistent with the tumor suppressor function of p53. Follow-up studies on one gene, RAI3, suggested that p53 interacts with the promoter of RAI3 and repressed its expression at the onset of apoptosis. The expression of RAI3 is elevated in most tumor cell lines expressing mutant p53, whereas RAI3 mRNA is relatively repressed in the tumor cell lines expressing wild-type p53. Furthermore, ectopic expression of RAI3 in 293 cells promotes anchorage-independent growth and small interfering RNA-mediated depletion of RAI3 in AsPc-1 pancreatic tumor cells induces cell morphological change. Taken together, these data suggest a role for RAI3 in tumor growth and demonstrate the predictive power of integrative genomics. 相似文献
