The aim of the present investigation was to examine whether some of the growth defects of calcium-deficient pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) seedlings are due to an incapability of the plants to assimilate nitrate nitrogen, such being the mechanism by which according to some of the previous authors growth defects in calcium deficient plants may be produced. The results of the present study, however, demonstrate that the accessibility of various possible products of nitrate reduction is not the limiting factor responsible for growth symptoms of calcium deficiency. 相似文献

The present report is focused on the study of participation of exogenous DNA in the process of postirradiation reparation of meristematic cells ofVicia faba primary roots. It is aimed at comparison of the positive reparative effect of isologous DNA with postirradiation action of heterologous DNA in its native, thermally denatured and DNAase-degraded forms, or DNA degraded by ultrasound, and with the effect of other biologically important macromolecules (RNA, histone, heparin, and dextran sulphate). For this purpose, the roots ofVicia faba irradiated by 150 r exposure were cultivated in solutions containing the above substances for an appropriate time interval. In squash slides both mitotic activity of the investigated cell population and frequency of postmetaphase chromosomal aberrations induced by radiation were evaluated. It was shown that a stimulation of cell division and reparation of chromosome damages were supported exclusively by isologous DNA. On the contrary, exogenously applied heterologous DNA increased postirradiation frequency of aberrations; maintenance of native structure of applied DNA was an essential condition for the above effect. Single cell protein production was studied in a mixed bacterial culture grown in methane using batch and continuous culture techniques. Overall productivity was found to be higher in the continuous culture which gave a maximum productivity value p = 0.15 g/l/h. Methane and oxygen were consumed in the relation 1 : 1.7. Yield coefficients for methane, oxygen, and ammonium chloride were Y = 0.90, Y = 0.26, and Y = 0.14. The crude protein content of the biomass was 71%. 相似文献

An ATPase reaction has been studied at the surface of intact normal and neoplastic human cells in culture. For this purpose a sensitive method has been developed which permits repeated monitoring of enzyme activity without interference with cellular viability. Experiments could be performed with the cells cultured in a single dish. The cells were firmly attached to the supporting medium throughout the experiment. The incubation medium could easily be separated from the cells at the end of the reaction. There was no diffusion of the surface-located ATPase into the incubation medium. Another advantage was the possibility of microscopic control of the appearance of the cells during the reaction. High ATPase activity was found in glia-like cells derived from normal adult brain cells while lines from gliomas had very low activity. One SV40 transformed glia line had an extremely low ATPase activity in contrast to the uninfected cells. Normal fibroblasts and sarcoma cells had about the same low activity as the glioma cells. 相似文献
