A comparative study of species composition, abundance and spatial distribution of the rotifers of Neva Bay (Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea), between 1982–1993, was carried out. The rotifer fauna in the central basin of Neva Bay is determined by and originates in Lake Ladoga and is very similar to that of the Neva River. High turbidity and effect of winds affecting water residence time influence composition and density of rotifers in this shallow estuary. The importance of rotifer assemblages for evaluation of the quality of the estuary is discussed.  相似文献

As a part of the US Joint Global Ocean Flux Studies, the microphytoplanktoncell numbers. volumes and biomass from eight stations on a transect(12S–12N) on or near 140W from the cruise of the R/V‘Thomas G.Thompson’ (Cruise TT007) February-March,1992, are integrated with previously reported counts. Althoughthese large cells (>15 µm) were from a diverse population,with many species (81–137) in this size range noted fromeach station, only a few (2–7) species made up 50% ofthe cell abundance of the totals of the diatoms, dinoflagellates,coccolithophorids and other algal cells from discrete watersamples taken in the upper 200 m. Even during the 1992 El Nio,reports indicate that surface nitrate was not depleted nearthe equator, but the low numbers of cells in this size fractionindicate that an unknown factor (other than nitrate or light)limited the growth. This synthetic analysis shows high diversity(Margalef's D > 10.4 at the maxima of each station), andlow cell numbers (1.4.6–3.73 108 cells m–2) andlow biomass (42.8–97.2 µg C m–2). The integratednumbers of larger coccolithophorids and diatoms showed somereduction near the equator, but the large reduction noted inthe total phytoplankton from the equator to 2N was largelydue to the dip in dinofiagellate numbers, coupled with a shallowmixed layer. Biomass had much the same latitudinal profile.During these El Nio conditions, this integrated study acrossa total of 24 latitude shows an anomaly of low equatorial phytoplanktonbiomass.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 lon mutants are supersusceptible to ciprofloxacin, and exhibit a defect in cell division and in virulence-related properties, such as swarming, twitching and biofilm formation, despite the fact that the Lon protease is not a traditional regulator. Here we set out to investigate the influence of a lon mutation in a series of infection models. It was demonstrated that the lon mutant had a defect in cytotoxicity towards epithelial cells, was less virulent in an amoeba model as well as a mouse acute lung infection model, and impacted on in vivo survival in a rat model of chronic infection. Using qRT-PCR it was demonstrated that the lon mutation led to a down-regulation of Type III secretion genes. The Lon protease also influenced motility and biofilm formation in a mucin-rich environment. Thus alterations in several virulence-related processes in vitro in a lon mutant were reflected by defective virulence in vivo.  相似文献

Diatom survivorship in ballast water during trans-Pacific crossings   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Ship ballast water is believed to be responsible for global dispersal of alien biota; mid-ocean ballast water exchange is most commonly used to mitigate this process. Diatoms are among the most abundant biotic-component in ballast water, yet their invasive biology is poorly understood. To test effectiveness of MOE we examined diatom species composition and cell density in two sets of samples. First, we examined samples collected daily during one 24 days long trans-Pacific crossing in tanks with and without ballast exchanged. Second, we used samples from 23 trans oceanic vessels arriving at Vancouver harbour where diatoms were collected on arrival. Up to 86,429 live diatom cells/l were found in the tanks, ~50% of the samples share up to eight species consistently present. Cell densities and species richness declined over time and with replacement of coastal ballast water by mid-oceanic water. In both data sets diatoms survive in the tanks for as long as 33 days despite ballast exchange.  相似文献

In this paper novel isoindolines substituted with cyano and amidino benzimidazoles and benzothiazoles were synthesized as new potential anti-cancer agents. The new structures were evaluated for antiproliferative activity, cell cycle changes, cell death, as well as DNA binding and topoisomerase inhibition properties on selected compounds. Results showed that all tested compounds exerted antitumor activity, especially amidinobenzothiazole and amidinobenzimidazole substituted isoindolin-1-ones and benzimidazole substituted 1-iminoisoindoline that showed antiproliferative effect in the submicromolar range. Moreover, the DNA-binding properties of selected compounds were evaluated by biophysical and biochemical approaches including thermal denaturation studies, circular dichroism spectra analyses and topoisomerase I/II inhibition assays and results identified some of them as strong DNA ligands, harboring or not additional topoisomerase II inhibition and able to locate in the nucleus as determined by fluorescence microscopy. In conclusion, we evidenced novel cyano- and amidino-substituted isoindolines coupled with benzimidazoles and benzothiazoles as topoisomerase inhibitors and/or DNA binding compounds with potent antitumor activities.  相似文献

Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) is an allergic dermatitis of horses caused by bites of insects. IBH is a multifactorial disease with contribution of genetic and environmental factors. Candidate gene association analysis of IBH was performed in a group of 89 Icelandic horses all born in Iceland and imported to Europe. Horses were classified in IBH-affected and non-affected based on clinical signs and history of recurrent dermatitis, and on the results of an in vitro sulfidoleukotriene (sLT)-release assay with Culicoides nubeculosus and Simulium vittatum extract. Different genetic markers were tested for association with IBH by the Fisher’s exact test. The effect of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene region was studied by genotyping five microsatellites spanning the MHC region (COR112, COR113, COR114, UM011 and UMN-JH34-2), and exon 2 polymorphisms of the class II Eqca-DRA gene. Associations with Eqca-DRA and COR113 were identified (p < 0.05). In addition, a panel of 20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 17 candidate allergy-related genes was tested. During the initial screen, no marker from the panel was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with IBH. Five SNPs associated with IBH at p < 0.10 were therefore used for analysis of combined genotypes. Out of them, SNPs located in the genes coding for the CD14 receptor (CD14), interleukin 23 receptor (IL23R), thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGFB3) molecules were associated with IBH as parts of complex genotypes. These results are supported by similar associations and by expression data from different horse populations and from human studies.  相似文献
