This paper analyses the conservation gains through High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) assessments in two South-East European
countries (Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania). These are based on the review of the Draft Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) National
Standards and HCVF Manuals and the results of the certification process of seven forest management units in the two countries.
The review indicates that the application of Principle 9 (High Conservation Value Forests) and Criterion 6.4 of the FSC in
Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania was influenced by the size and nature of tenure (i.e., public or non-public land), rather than
geographic location per se. The study also revealed that the assessment of HCVF has, for the first time, raised the question
of conservation of cultural, historical and religious values as well as the sustainable management of those forests relevant
for the basic needs of communities. These are values not currently covered at the present by the national conservation legislation
in either of these two countries. Findings of this study in both countries demonstrates that there are certain conservation
gains as a result of the HCVF assessment, especially related to ecosystem services, prevention of soil erosion and conservation

Recent reviews of the conservation literature indicate that significant biases exist in the published literature regarding
the regions, ecosystems and species that have been examined by researchers. Despite the global threat of climatic change,
similar biases may be occurring within the sub-discipline of climate-change ecology. Here we hope to foster critical thought
and discussion by considering the directions taken by conservation researchers when addressing climate change. To form a quantitative
basis for our perspective, we assessed 248 papers from the climate change literature that considered the conservation management
of biodiversity and ecosystems. We found that roughly half of the studies considered climate change in isolation from other
threatening processes. We also found that the majority of surveyed scientific publications were conducted in the temperate
forests of Europe and North America. Regions such as Latin America that are rich in biodiversity but may have low adaptive
capacity to climate change were not well represented. We caution that such biases in research effort may be distracting our
attention away from vulnerable regions, ecosystems and species. Specifically we suggest that the under-representation of research
from regions low in adaptive capacity and rich in biodiversity requires international collaboration by those experienced in
climate-change research, with researchers from less wealthy nations who are familiar with local issues, ecosystems and species.
Furthermore, we caution that the propensity of ecologists to work in essentially unmodified ecosystems may fundamentally hamper
our ability to make useful recommendations in a world that is experiencing significant global change. 相似文献

Amphibians are good indicators of human impact, declining steadily worldwide. We explored the relationships between the ponds and nearby landscape parameters and population size of the Agile Frog (Rana dalmatina), estimated from the number of egg masses, in a cultural landscape within the central section of Târnava Mare Basin, Romania. Forty-three permanent ponds were surveyed in a 2600 km2 area. The average number of egg masses per pond was 211.13 (SD = 426.41). The egg mass number was significantly and positively related to the emergent aquatic macrophyte cover (its effect peaks at around 50%) and the green connecting corridors between the ponds and forests, and negatively related to the extent of nearby urban areas. The proximity of the forest (positive effect) and the presence of high traffic roads (negative effect) were highly correlated with green corridors and further eliminated from the model due to multicollinearity. Both these variables had significant effects when incorporated in univariate models and multivariate models without green corridors. Since a large part of our study area was currently declared as Natura 2000 site, there is an increased need for management proposals and conservation applications for biodiversity, including amphibians. The assessment of caveolin-1 (Cav-1) as a marker of tumor aggressiveness in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). In this
study, we examined the expression of Cav-1 in 34 human PDAC tissue samples and the associated peritumoral tissues by immunohistochemistry
and western blot. Additionally, we correlated Cav-1 expression with other tissue (Ki-67, p53) and serum (CA 19-9) tumor markers.
In the tumor-derived tissue, both tumor cells and blood vessels expressed Cav-1. In contrast, in peritumoral tissue, Cav-1
expression was confined mainly to blood vessels and was only occasionally expressed in ductal or parenchymal cells. Western
blot analysis confirmed the overexpression of Cav-1 in pancreatic tumors compared with peritumoral tissue. Cav-1 expression
in tumor tissues was correlated with both the Ki-67 LI (r = 0.95, P < 0.0001) and p53 expression (χ2 = 9.91, P < 0.005). Overexpression of Cav-1 was associated with tumor size, grade and stage and Cav-1 expression in tumors was correlated
with an increased serum level of CA 19-9 (r = 0.795, P < 0.001). Based on the results of this study, the inclusion of Cav-1 in a putative panel of biomarkers predicting pancreatic

Free-energy profiles describing the relative orientation of membrane proteins along predefined coordinates can be efficiently calculated by means of umbrella simulations. Such simulations generate reliable orientational distributions but are difficult to converge because of the very long equilibration times of the solvent and the lipid bilayer in explicit representation. Two implicit lipid membrane models are here applied in combination with the umbrella sampling strategy to the simulation of the transmembrane (TM) helical segment from virus protein U (Vpu). The models are used to study both orientation and energetics of this α-helical peptide as a function of hydrophobic mismatch. We observe that increasing the degree of positive hydrophobic mismatch increased the tilt angle of Vpu. These findings agree well with experimental data and as such validate the solvation models used in this study. 相似文献

The steady two-dimensional flow and heat transfer over a stretching/shrinking sheet in a nanofluid is investigated using Buongiorno’s nanofluid model. Different from the previously published papers, in the present study we consider the case when the nanofluid particle fraction on the boundary is passively rather than actively controlled, which make the model more physically realistic. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into nonlinear ordinary differential equations by a similarity transformation, before being solved numerically by a shooting method. The effects of some governing parameters on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are graphically presented and discussed. Dual solutions are found to exist in a certain range of the suction and stretching/shrinking parameters. DBA/2J (D2) mice develop an age-related form of glaucoma. Their eyes progressively develop iris pigment dispersion and iris atrophy followed by increased intraocular pressure (IOP) and glaucomatous optic nerve damage. Mutant alleles of the Gpnmb and Tyrp1 genes are necessary for the iris disease, but it is unknown whether alleles of other D2 gene(s) are necessary for the distinct later stages of disease.
