Summary A polytrophic ovariole of the queen honeybee, Apis mellifera, is composed of a linear series of increasingly mature egg chambers, each consisting of an oocyte, an interconnected cluster of nurse cells, and a covering layer of follicle cells. This study describes changes in the volume of each of these components, as a function of the position of the egg chamber in the ovariole. An oocyte increases in volume from approximately 8.9 × 103 m3 to approximately 9.6 × 106 m3 over an average series of 20 egg chambers.  相似文献

Summary The urophysis or neurohemal contact site of the caudal neurosecretory system of Mollienesia sphenops, the black molly, was studied in animals adapted to an artificial seawater environment. This species of fish was chosen for these studies because of its known ability to osmoregulate and its adaptability to the laboratory aquarium. The urophysis of freshwater acclimated mollys contained an abundance of neurosecretory granules. However, in fish subjected to a seawater environment for one week the number of neurosecretory granules was significantly decreased. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy of the lateral ventricles of the toad brain revealed the presence of supraependymal cells that have the features of macrophages. Based solely on their surface morphology three different cell forms could be identified. The most frequently observed cells are flat and multipolar, and have a smooth or ruffled surface. The second type is spherical with a ruffled surface and occurs either singly, in which case it lacks processes, or in clusters from which processes radiate. The third type has surface blebs and numerous thin, smooth processes. However, when specimens that had been examined in the scanning electron microscope are viewed in the transmission electron microscope, all cells appear to belong to a single cell type. All cells viewed closely resemble macrophages in that they contain nuclei with clumped chromaffin, single cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum, numerous dense bodies, and many Golgi complexes. In addition, when horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was perfused into the ventricles, reaction product was found a short time thereafter within cytoplasmic vacuoles, and after a longer period within dense bodies. Because of their ultrastructural resemblance to macrophages and their capacity to ingest HRP, we suggest that these cells function as phagocytes and, as such, act to remove foreign materials from the cerbrospinal fluid.  相似文献

Summary Immunoreactive vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was detected in a population of amacrine cells in the retina of the rat. Processes of these cells reach both the inner and outer half of the inner plexiform layer where they form sublayers. The VIP neurons are different from previously known amacrine cell types.  相似文献

Summary Following injection of high doses of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), mesenchymal cells distributed in the perisinusoidal space of the pars tuberalis of the hypophysis in cats, rabbits and Japanese quails, sequester the exogenously administrated peroxidase intensively. These cells are designated by the authors as horseradish peroxidase-uptake cells (HRP-uptake cells or HUC). HRP-uptake cells constitute a system of macrophages in the pars tuberalis of mammals and birds, and are located around the hypophysial portal veins. HRP-uptake cells differ in morphological and functional characteristics from similar cells in other parts of hypophysis. Summary Scale formation in Cyprinodon variegatus was found to be initiated at about 26 to 30 days after hatching. Ultrastructural investigation revealed that within 4 to 6 h in the first-formed scales the marginal cells begin to flatten and differentiate into osteogenic cells, which later change to osteoblasts and fibroblasts. These cells are separated from the surrounding epithelial cells by a basal lamina. The osteoid is formed by the marginal and osteogenic cells; the osseous layer by the osteoblasts; and the fibrillary plate by the fibroblasts.The osteoid is formed within 2 to 3 h after the initiation of the scale, and within 20 to 24 h the osseous layer is formed. Hydroxyapatite crystals are deposited in the matrix of the osseous layer without apparent association with collagen fibers. No matrix vesicles or dense bodies are evident at the sites of calcification. The fibrillary plate arises 18 to 20 h after the initiation of the scale. It is also partially calcified, but not before the third week of scale formation. The crystals develop almost exclusively between the collagen fibers at the extreme edge of the calcifying front, but solid calcification of the fibers results with further growth of the crystals. The fibroblasts appear to participate in calcification of the fibrillary plate.Contribution No. 332, Belle W. Summary Treatment of cultured goldfish xanthophores by hormone (ACTH) or c-AMP induces not only pigment dispersion, but subsequent outgrowth of processes, and pigment translocation into these processes. These latter effects are shown to proceed as follows: First the edge of the cytoplasmic lamellae takes on a scalloped contour with numerous protrusions. These presumably serve as nucleation centers where short microfilament bundles are assembled, Later, the microfilament bundles elongate (grow), often resulting in an extension of the protrusions to become filopodia while the proximal end of the microfilaments penetrates into the thicker portion of the cellular process which now houses the pigment, i.e., the carotenoid droplets. Carotenoid droplets appear to migrate along the microfilament bundles, or cytoplasmic channels associated with them, into the filopodia. Finally, some of the filopodia become broader, thicker and laden with carotenoid droplets and are then recognized by light microscopy as pigmented cellular processes. The microfilaments have been shown to be actin filaments by their thickness, the size of their subunits, and decoration by heavy meromyosin. Evidence is presented which suggests that the growth of these actin filaments may come about by recruitment from short F-actin strands found in random orientation in adjacent areas.  相似文献

In the present study, we examined the distribution of [3H]corticosterone ([3H]B) in chick embryonic brain during development using two different routes of administration: intracerebral and intraocular. After injection of 1 Ci into the brain of 8-day embryos, [3H]B was preferentially accumulated in the retinas, whereas regions such as cerebral hemispheres, optic tecta, and midbrain showed lower amounts of [3H]B. In 14-day embryos, a slightly higher amount of [3H]B was found in retinas and midbrain in comparison with other regions of the brain. After injection into the eye, [3H]B seemed to easily diffuse to brain regions and to preferentially accumulate in the opposite eye and very slowly diffused to other brain areas. The accumulation of the hormone in the retina parallels the presence of hormone receptors reported by others. A correlation between the preferential accumulation of hormone and its action is proposed.  相似文献
