Body language reading is of significance for daily life social cognition and successful social interaction, and constitutes a core component of social competence. Yet it is unclear whether our ability for body language reading is gender specific. In the present work, female and male observers had to visually recognize emotions through point-light human locomotion performed by female and male actors with different emotional expressions. For subtle emotional expressions only, males surpass females in recognition accuracy and readiness to respond to happy walking portrayed by female actors, whereas females exhibit a tendency to be better in recognition of hostile angry locomotion expressed by male actors. In contrast to widespread beliefs about female superiority in social cognition, the findings suggest that gender effects in recognition of emotions from human locomotion are modulated by emotional content of actions and opposite actor gender. In a nutshell, the study makes a further step in elucidation of gender impact on body language reading and on neurodevelopmental and psychiatric deficits in visual social cognition.  相似文献

Excessive post‐operative wound healing with subsequent scarring frequently leads to surgical failure of glaucoma filtration surgery (trabeculectomy). We investigated the hypothesis that placental growth factor (PlGF) plays a role in post‐operative scar formation, and that it therefore may be a target for improvement of filtration surgery outcome. ELISA experiments showed that PlGF levels were significantly increased in aqueous humour of glaucoma patients and after VEGF treatment, which may indicate an important contribution of this growth factor to wound healing after trabeculectomy. Using a mouse model of glaucoma filtration surgery, we were able to show that intracameral injection of a previously characterized anti‐PlGF antibody (ThromboGenics NV) significantly improved surgical outcome by increasing bleb survival and bleb area. This was associated with a significant reduction in post‐operative proliferation, inflammation and angiogenesis during the first post‐operative days after surgery, and with a decrease in collagen deposition at later stages. Furthermore, inhibition of PlGF seemed to be more effective than anti‐VEGF‐R2 treatment in improving surgical outcome, possibly via its additional effect on inflammation. These results render PlGF an appealing target for ocular wound healing and point to potential therapeutic benefits of PlGF inhibition for the prevention of surgical failure.  相似文献

The European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (EUROCAT) is a network of population-based congenital anomaly registries in Europe, funded by the European Union, which has been in operation for more than 30 years. It currently surveys more than 1.7 million births per year, including 31% of births in the European Union, and includes almost all population-based European congenital anomaly registries as its members. EUROCAT member registries collect data, ascertained from multiple sources, on all major structural congenital and chromosomal anomalies. EUROCAT surveillance relates to three areas: prevalence, primary prevention, and prenatal screening. This article describes the history of EUROCAT and gives an overview of the current methodology and work of EUROCAT covering the database content and management, coding and classification of anomalies, core surveillance, prevalence tables, statistical monitoring. The monitoring of new developments in prenatal diagnosis, medication during pregnancy, use of folic acid, and investigation of clusters and exposures are overseen by working groups responsible for organizing research and producing regular reports. The EUROCAT Web site includes current data on prevalence rates and prenatal detection rates-an example of information useful to clinicians, public health service managers, and patients.  相似文献

The concentration of precursors of carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds, nitrates and nitrites as well as ammonia, in the surface water of Lake Peipsi and its tributaries has been determined during the period 1985–1988. The nitrate and nitrite content was also analysed in bottom sediments and fish from the lake.The nitrate concentration in the water of Lake Peipsi varied from 0.01 to 2.33 mg NO3&z.sbnd;N l–1, the average value from 0.27 to 1.60 mg NO3&z.sbnd;N l–1, with the lowest concentrations in summer. The variations may be caused by different pollution loads, meteorological conditions, and assimilation of nitrates by plants and algae.The nitrate content in the water of rivers was on an average somewhat higher in comparison with its concentrations in the lake. The concentrations of nitrites were, as a rule, about an order of magnitude lower than those of nitrates. The amount of ammonia varied from 0.15 to 0.36 mg NH4&z.sbnd;N l–1.At present the concentrations of the studied nitrogen compounds are not essential and do not prevent from using the lake for recreation and drinking water supply.  相似文献

Previous research reveals that a more 'African' appearance has significant social consequences, yielding more negative first impressions and harsher criminal sentencing of Black or White individuals. This study is the first to systematically assess the relative contribution of skin tone and facial metrics to White, Black, and Korean perceivers' ratings of the racial prototypicality of faces from the same three groups. Our results revealed that the relative contribution of metrics and skin tone depended on both perceiver race and face race. White perceivers' racial prototypicality ratings were less responsive to variations in skin tone than were Black or Korean perceivers' ratings. White perceivers ratings' also were more responsive to facial metrics than to skin tone, while the reverse was true for Black perceivers. Additionally, across all perceiver groups, skin tone had a more consistent impact than metrics on racial prototypicality ratings of White faces, with the reverse for Korean faces. For Black faces, the relative impact varied with perceiver race: skin tone had a more consistent impact than metrics for Black and Korean perceivers, with the reverse for White perceivers. These results have significant implications for predicting who will experience racial prototypicality biases and from whom.  相似文献

Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystemic disease caused by toxic RNA from a DMPK gene carrying an expanded (CTG•CAG)n repeat. Promising strategies for treatment of DM1 patients are currently being tested. These include antisense oligonucleotides and drugs for elimination of expanded RNA or prevention of aberrant binding to RNP proteins. A significant hurdle for preclinical development along these lines is efficient systemic delivery of compounds across endothelial and target cell membranes. It has been reported that DM1 patients show elevated levels of markers of muscle damage or loss of sarcolemmal integrity in their serum and that splicing of dystrophin, an essential protein for muscle membrane structure, is abnormal. Therefore, we studied cell membrane integrity in DM1 mouse models commonly used for preclinical testing. We found that membranes in skeletal muscle, heart and brain were impermeable to Evans Blue Dye. Creatine kinase levels in serum were similar to those in wild type mice and expression of dystrophin protein was unaffected. Also in patient muscle biopsies cell surface expression of dystrophin was normal and calcium-positive fibers, indicating elevated intracellular calcium levels, were only rarely seen. Combined, our findings indicate that cells in DM1 tissues do not display compromised membrane integrity. Hence, the cell membrane is a barrier that must be overcome in future work towards effective drug delivery in DM1 therapy.  相似文献

We determined whether binocular central scotomas above or below the preferred retinal locus affect detection of hazards (pedestrians) approaching from the side. Seven participants with central field loss (CFL), and seven age-and sex-matched controls with normal vision (NV), each completed two sessions of 5 test drives (each approximately 10 minutes long) in a driving simulator. Participants pressed the horn when detecting pedestrians that appeared at one of four eccentricities (-14°, -4°, left, 4°, or 14°, right, relative to car heading). Pedestrians walked or ran towards the travel lane on a collision course with the participant’s vehicle, thus remaining in the same area of the visual field, assuming participant''s steady forward gaze down the travel lane. Detection rates were nearly 100% for all participants. CFL participant reaction times were longer (median 2.27s, 95% CI 2.13 to 2.47) than NVs (median 1.17s, 95%CI 1.10 to 2.13; difference p<0.01), and CFL participants would have been unable to stop for 21% of pedestrians, compared with 3% for NV, p<0.001. Although the scotomas were not expected to obscure pedestrian hazards, gaze tracking revealed that scotomas did sometimes interfere with detection; late reactions usually occurred when pedestrians were entirely or partially obscured by the scotoma (time obscured correlated with reaction times, r = 0.57, p<0.001). We previously showed that scotomas lateral to the preferred retinal locus delay reaction times to a greater extent; however, taken together, the results of our studies suggest that any binocular CFL might negatively impact timely hazard detection while driving and should be a consideration when evaluating vision for driving.  相似文献

Mutant of Escherichia coli have been analyzed which miss two of the major proteins of the outer cell envelope membrane. The two proteins I and II1, normally are present at high concentrations (about 105 copies per cell).In such mutants, as compared with wild type, the phospholipid-to-protein ratio in the outer membrane has increased by a factor of 2.3 causing a considerable difference in density between wild type and mutant membranes. The concentrations of two other major components of the outer membrane, lipopolysaccharide and Braun's lipoprotein, did not change.The protein-deficient mutants do not exhibit gross functional defects in vitro. An increased sensitivity to EDTA and a slight such increase to dodecyl sulfate (but not to deoxycholate or Triton X-100) was observed, loss of so-called periplasmic enzymes was not found, and other differences to wild type are marginal. The mutants can grow with normal morphology. It is not possible, however, to prepare “ghosts” (particles of size and shape of the cell without murein, surrounded by a derivative of the outer membrane, and posssessing the major proteins of this membrane) from them. This fact confirms our earlier suggestion that the proteins in question are required for the shape maintenance phenomenon in ghosts, and the mutants reject the speculation that these proteins are involved in the expression of the genetic information specifying cellular shape.Freeze-fracturing showed that in mutant cells, and in sharp contrast to wild type, the far predominant fracture plane is within the outer membrane. The concentration of the well known densely packed particles at the outer, concave leaflet of this fracture plane is greatly reduced. It was not possible, however, to clearly establish that one or the other protein is part of these particles because these ultrastructural differences were not apparent in mutants missing either one of the proteins only. The biochemical and ultrastructural data allow the conclusion that the loss of two major proteins and the concomitant increase of phospholipid concentration has changed the architecture of the outer membrane from a highly oriented structure. with a large fraction of protein-protein interaction, to one predominantly exhibiting planar lipid bilayer characteristics. E. coli thus can assemble rather different outer membranes, afact excluding that outer membrane formatin constitutes a highly ordered or strictly sequential assembly-line process.  相似文献
