Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most common cause of endocrine hypertension with a high frequency of cardiovascular complications. We found in our previous study higher occurrence of metabolic disturbances in patients with idiopathic hyperaldosteronism (IHA) compared to subjects with aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA). The aim of our present study is to evaluate potential differences in the frequency of end-organ damage (arterial stiffness and microalbuminuria) between two main types of PA. The diagnosis of the particular form of PA was based on adrenal venous sampling and/or histopathological examination. We analyzed clinical and laboratory data from 72 patients with PA (36 with IHA, 36 with APA). The arterial stiffness was expressed as the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) and the renal damage as urinary albumin excretion levels (UAE). Patients with IHA had significantly (p<0.03) higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (17 % in APA, 35 % in IHA), higher triglycerides (1.37+/-0.71 mmol/l in APA, 1.85+/-0.87 mmol/l in IHA), lower HDL cholesterol (1.25+/-0.28 mmol/l in APA, 1.06+/-0.25 mmol/l in IHA), higher PWV (7.91+/-1.61 m/s in APA, 8.99+/-1.77 m/s in IHA) and higher UAE (12.93+/-2.21 mg/l in APA, 28.09+/-6.66 mg/l in IHA). It seems that patients with IHA may have a slightly different phenotype compared to APA.  相似文献

Evaluating whether protected areas reduce tropical deforestation in Sumatra   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Aim  This study determines whether the establishment of tropical protected areas (PAs) has led to a reduction in deforestation within their boundaries or whether deforestation has been displaced to adjacent unprotected areas: a process termed neighbourhood leakage.
Location  Sumatra, Indonesia.
Methods  We processed and analysed 98 corresponding LANDSAT satellite images with a c.  800 m2 resolution to map deforestation from 1990 to 2000 across 440,000 km2 on the main island of Sumatra and the smaller island of Siberut. We compared deforestation rates across three categories of land: (1) within PAs; (2) in adjacent unprotected land lying with 10 km of PA boundaries; and (3) within the wider unprotected landscape. We used the statistical method of propensity score matching to predict the deforestation that would have been observed had there been no PAs and to control for the generally remote locations in which Sumatran PAs were established.
Results  During the period 1990–2000 deforestation rates were found to be lower inside PAs than in adjacent unprotected areas or in the wider landscape. Deforestation rates were also found to be lower in adjacent unprotected areas than in the wider landscape.
Main conclusions  Sumatran PAs have lower deforestation rates than unprotected areas. Furthermore, a reduction in deforestation rates inside Sumatran PAs has promoted protection, rather than deforestation, in adjacent unprotected land lying within 10 km of PA boundaries. Despite this positive evaluation, deforestation and logging have not halted within the boundaries of Sumatran PAs. Therefore the long-term viability of Sumatran forests remains open to question.  相似文献

Chromosomal locations of major 45S and minor 5S ribosomal DNAs (rDNAs) and organization of 5S rRNA genes were analysed in five different populations of golden mahseers (Tor putitora) using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and Southern blot hybridization. All five populations of T. putitora (2n = 100) showed a similar type of macro-karyotype composed of 12 metacentric, 22 submetacentric, 14 subtelocentric and 52 telocentric chromosomes. Analysis of active nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) by silver staining did not show any differences in number and chromosomal position in different populations. But FISH data showed significant difference between the populations, four of the five populations showed six 18S (three pairs) and two 5S (one pair) signals with positional polymorphism, while one population showed eight 18S and four 5S signals, respectively. Southern blot data confirms that 5S rDNA clusters present on two different chromosome pairs in Kosi river population contain non-transcribed spacers (NTS) of same length. In the present study, simultaneous localization of 45S and 5S rDNA by in situ hybridization helped us to develop the discrete population-specific markers in different geographically isolated populations of T. putitora.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria are recognized as producers of a broad variety of bioactive metabolites. Among these, the peptides synthesized by the non-ribosomal peptide synthetase pathway occur in high structural variability. One class of cyanobacterial peptides, the cyanopeptolins or micropeptins, have been shown to be strong inhibitors of vertebrate serine proteases, like trypsin. In the present study we screened extracts of ten strains of the unicellular cyanobacterium Microcystis sp. for their potential to inhibit trypsin-like activity in the planktonic crustacea Daphnia, the main herbivores in freshwater ecosystem. Respective standardized IC(50)'s varied for nearly two orders of magnitude. In HPLC fractions we could identify mainly cyanopeptolins as active compounds by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Cyanopeptolins were found in 22 structural variants with 13 variants produced by one strain alone. Peptides of the microviridin class were moderately active while no activity was evident for microginins and microcystins. Among the cyanopeptolins only those were active that had an arginine or lysine residue N-terminal to the modified amino acid 3-amino-6-hydroxy-piperidone. Structural variants that had a tyrosine residue at this particular position did not inhibit trypsin-like activity. The highly variable composition of the side chain of cyanopeptolins had no marked effect on the activity. Among the six cyanobacterial strains we tested intensively two did not produce any cyanopeptolins and were accordingly less active as crude extracts. The present study underlines the potential importance of the biochemistry of cyanobacteria for the feeding ecology of a planktonic herbivore.  相似文献

The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the mineral release abilities of ten rhizobacterial strains isolated from rhizosphere of various crops growing in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) of India. Their abilities to solubilize inorganic phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) minerals from insoluble tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and waste muscovite (WM) revealed that rhizobacteria significantly solubilized different levels of inorganic P and fixed K, respectively. Some of the rhizobacterial stains have the ability to produce ammonia, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and hydrogen cyanide (HCN). The identification based on the 16S rDNA gene sequencing of selected mineral-solubilizing rhizobacteria (MSR) having greater potential to serve as bioagents were identified as Bacillus subtilis (BRHU01, BRHU03, and BHU20), Bacillus tequilensis (BRHU02), Bacillus licheniformis (BRHU04), Bacillus pumilus (BRHU05), Bacillus flexus (BHU02), Brevibacillus formosus (BHU16), Bacillus methylotrophicus (BHU29), and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BHU30). Interestingly, inorganic P and K solubilization by these strains belonging to genera Bacillus and Brevibacillus showed significant variations from 0.52 to 14.49 and from 1.62 to 8.60 µg mL?1, respectively. However, generally, pH values of culture media decreased from near neutral (6.43) to acidic (3.83) with increasing incubation period, and this was inversely correlated with quantities of K solubilized by these rhizobacterial strains. Meanwhile, the electrical conductivity (EC) of broth culture increased from 0.09 to 0.23 dS m?1 with increasing incubation period. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the MSR revealed three clusters, which exhibited high variance with respect to nutrient release. Taken together, these results suggest that Bacillus and Brevibacillus sp. identified in this study solubilized varying levels of inorganic P and fixed K from insoluble TCP and WM by acidolysis mechanisms.  相似文献

Gene targeting in the mouse is a powerful tool to study mammalian gene function. The possibility to efficiently introduce somatic mutations in a given gene, at a chosen time and/or in a given cell type will further improve such studies, and will facilitate the generation of animal models for human diseases. To create targeted somatic mutations in the epidermis, we established transgenic mice expressing the bacteriophage P1 Cre recombinase or the tamoxifen-dependent Cre-ER(T2) recombinase under the control of the human keratin 14 (K14) promoter. We show that LoxP flanked (floxed) DNA segments were efficiently excised in epidermal keratinocytes of K14-Cre transgenic mice. Furthermore, Tamoxifen administration to adult K14-Cre-ER(T2) mice efficiently induced recombination in the basal keratinocytes, whereas no background recombination was detected in the absence of ligand treatment. These two transgenic lines should be very useful to analyse the functional role of a number of genes expressed in keratinocytes.  相似文献
