Background

Similar to other developing countries, Pakistan is going through a rapid nutrition transition where shift from underweight to overweight and obesity is occurring. In this paper, we report on the relationship of household socioeconomic position (SEP), community SEP and urbanicity with under- and over-weight categories of BMI among Pakistani women.

Methods

We analyzed data on 4,767 women ages 15-49 years enrolled in a nationally representative Pakistan Demographic Health Survey (PDHS) conducted in 2012-13 that employed a multistage, stratified cluster sampling design. We assessed the association of urbanicity, household and community SEP derived from household assets and utilities, with categories of body mass index (BMI) using multinomial regression analysis where normal weight (BMI 18.6-22.5) was the reference category.

Results

Thirteen percent of women were underweight (BMI <18.5), 15% pre-overweight (BMI: 22.6-24.9), 25% overweight (BMI: 25.0–29.9) and 14% were obese (BMI≥30). Pre-overweight, overweight and obesity among women increased across household wealth quintiles (HWQs) in a graded fashion whereas there was no significant difference in underweight by household wealth. Women in urban areas were more likely to be obese. There was a pronounced increase in adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for overweight/obesity across HWQs within urban areas compared to rural areas. There was a steeper gradient in aORs for obesity from 1st to 5th HWQs in high income communities compared to the middle- and low income communities. In community-level analyses, communities in urban areas were more likely to have higher levels of obesity while in rural areas, especially in Sindh, more communities were more likely to have a higher level of underweight.

Conclusion

A shift to higher overweight and obesity than underweight in Pakistan is associated with high household and community wealth as well as living in urban areas. Clustering of obesity and underweight in distinct communities afford opportunity for tailored intervention programs.  相似文献

野生大豆抗感大豆孢囊线虫材料内生细菌多样性分析   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
【目的】对抗感野生大豆材料根内生细菌的多样性进行比较分析,为研究野生大豆内生细菌与大豆孢囊线虫之间的相互关系奠定基础。【方法】在野生大豆抗大豆孢囊线虫3号生理小种筛选基础上,利用扩增核糖体DNA限制性分析(Amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis,ARDRA)和16S rDNA克隆文库测序相结合的方法,对抗感野生大豆根系内生细菌多样性及群落结构进行分析。【结果】野生大豆根内生细菌分属于6大类群,其中变形菌门(Proteobacteria)和厚壁菌门(Firmicutes)为优势类群,相对丰度分别为46.8%和13.6%,另外有少量的放线菌门(Actinobacteria)、拟杆菌门(Bacteroidetes)、酸杆菌门(Acidobacteria)、异常球菌-栖热菌门(Deincoccus-Thermus)和古细菌(Archaea),18.8%克隆序列与环境中未培养细菌的16S rDNA序列有较高的相似性。野生大豆高抗材料内生细菌的多样性比高感材料更为丰富,且抗感材料内生细菌优势菌群存在明显差异,中慢生根瘤菌(Mesorhizobium tamadayense)、肠杆菌(Enterobacter ludwigii)和巨大芽孢杆菌(Bacillus megaterium)为野生大豆高抗材料特有的可操作分类单元(Operational Taxonomic Units,OTUs)中的优势种群。【结论】研究结果表明抗感野生大豆根内生细菌的优势种群存在明显差异,而内生细菌的优势种群与大豆孢囊线虫的相互关系正在深入分析研究。  相似文献

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy of intact cells results in a fingerprint of their biochemistry in the form of an IR spectrum; this has given rise to the new field of biospectroscopy. This protocol describes sample preparation (a tissue section or cytology specimen), the application of IR spectroscopy tools, and computational analysis. Experimental considerations include optimization of specimen preparation, objective acquisition of a sufficient number of spectra, linking of the derived spectra with tissue architecture or cell type, and computational analysis. The preparation of multiple specimens (up to 50) takes 8 h; the interrogation of a tissue section can take up to 6 h (~100 spectra); and cytology analysis (n = 50, 10 spectra per specimen) takes 14 h. IR spectroscopy generates complex data sets and analyses are best when initially based on a multivariate approach (principal component analysis with or without linear discriminant analysis). This results in the identification of class clustering as well as class-specific chemical entities.  相似文献

The air-jet and ball-mill are frequently used in fine micronization of active pharmaceutical ingredients to the order of 1–5 μm, which is important for increasing dissolution rates, and also for pulmonary delivery. In this study, we investigated the ability of air-jet and ball-mill to achieve adequate micronization on the lab scale using a model soft material, Pluronic® F-68. Material mechanical properties were characterized using the nanometer 600. Pluronic® F-68 was ball-milled in a micro-mill at different material weights and durations in liquid nitrogen vapor. In comparison, a lab scale air-jet mill was used at various milling parameters according to a full factorial design, where the response factors were particle yield and particle size distribution, which was analyzed using laser diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The yield achieved with the micro-ball mill was 100% but was ~80% for the air-jet mill, which reduced the size of Pluronic® F-68 from 70 μm to sizes ranging between 23–39 μm median diameters. Ball milling produced particles less than 10 μm after 15 min. Although air-jet milling proved capable of particle size reduction of the relatively soft material Pluronic® F-68, limitations to the lower size range achievable were observed. The feed rate of the material into the air jet mill was a significant factor and slower feed rates lead to smaller sizes by allowing more time for particle collisions and subsequent particle breakage to occur. Micro-ball milling under cold condition was more successful at achieving a lower range particle size reduction of soft materials.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to achieve a better therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance in the treatment for vaginitis. Clotrimazole (1%) has been formulated in a vaginal gel using the thermosensitive polymer Pluronic F127 (20%) together with mucoadhesive polymers such as Carbopol 934 and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (0.2% for both). To increase its aqueous solubility, clotrimazole was incorporated as its inclusion complex with 1:1 molar ratio with beta-cyclodextrin. The inclusion complex was thoroughly characterized using various techniques, including 1H NMR spectroscopy, FT IR spectrophotometry, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, phase solubility studies, and determination of stability constant (k(1:1)). The gelation temperature and rheological behavior of different formulations at varying temperatures were measured. In vitro release profiles of the gels were determined in pH 5.5 citrate buffer. It was observed that complexation with cyclodextrin slowed down the release of clotrimazole considerably. Carbopol 934, on the other hand, was found to interact with beta-cyclodextrin, inducing precipitation. As far as rheological properties are concerned, thermosensitive in situ gelling was obtained with formulations containing drug:cyclodextrin complex rather than with free drug. Thus, the optimum formulation for a controlled-release thermosensitive and mucoadhesive vaginal gel was determined to be clotrimazole:beta-cyclodextrin 1% with 0.2% hydroxypropylmethylcellulose in Pluronic F127 gel (20%) providing continuous and prolonged release of active material above MIC values.  相似文献

The identification of transfers of useful alien genes for metal homeostasis from non-progenitor Aegilops species using the widely available anchored wheat SSR markers is difficult due to their lower polymorphism with the distant related wild species and the lack of locus specificity further restricts their application. The present study deals with the development of intron targeted amplified polymorphic (ITAP) markers for the metal homeostasis genes present on chromosomes of groups 2 and 7 of Triticeae. The mRNA sequences of 27 metal homeostasis genes were retrieved from different plant species using NCBI database and their BLASTn was performed against the wheat draft genome sequences in Ensemblplants to get exonic and intronic sequences of the corresponding metal homeostasis genes in wheat. The ITAP primers were developed in such a way that they would anneal to the conserved flanking exonic regions of the genes and amplify across highly variable introns within the PCR limits. The primers led to the amplification of variable intronic sequences of genes with polymorphism between non-progenitor Aegilops species and the recipient wheat cultivars. Further, the polymorphic ITAP markers were used to characterize the transfers of metal homeostasis genes from the non-progenitor Aegilops species to the BC2F5 wheat-Aegilops derivatives, developed through induced homoeologous pairing. The derivatives with significant percent increase in grain Fe and Zn content over the elite cultivar PBW343 LrP showed the introgression of some of the useful Aegilops alleles of the metal homeostasis genes. The use of different metal homeostasis genes using this approach is the first report of the direct contribution of the genes for increasing the grain micronutrient content for developing biofortified wheat lines with reduced linkage drag.  相似文献

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) causes death of 2-3 million people annually and is considered one of the most successful intracellular pathogens to persist inside the host macrophage. Recent studies have implicated the role of RD-1 region of Mtb genome in the mycobacterial pathogenesis. The role of RD-1-encoded secretory proteins of Mtb in modulation of macrophage function has not been investigated in detail. Here we show that RD-1 encoded two major secretory proteins, namely, culture filtrate protein-10 kDa (CFP-10) and early secreted antigenic target-6 kDa (ESAT-6), and their 1:1 CFP-10:ESAT6 complex inhibit production of reactive oxidative species (ROS) in RAW264.7 cells. These proteins also downregulated the bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ROS production, which, in turn, downregulated LPS-induced nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) p65 DNA-binding activity, as well as inhibited the NF-kappaB-dependent reporter gene (chloramphenicol acetyl transferase) expression in the treated macrophages. Moreover, addition of N-acetyl cysteine, which is a scavenger of ROS, also inhibited LPS-induced reporter gene expression by scavenging the ROS, thereby preventing NF-kappaB transactivation. These studies indicate that the secretory proteins CFP-10, ESAT-6 and the CFP10:ESAT6 complex of Mtb can inhibit LPS-induced NF-kappaB-dependent gene expression via downregulation of ROS production.  相似文献

A series of 3-substituted 1,4-benzodiazepin-2-ones derived from S and R amino acids were evaluated for their anti-ischemic activity in vitro. Treatment with compounds 7h, 16, 9d, and 17 decreased the apoptotic neuronal number, however increased the neuronal viability. The compounds decreasing apoptosis could protect neurons from the ischemic injury. The difference in the activities of 1,4-benzodiazepin-2-ones derived from S- and R-amino acids is discussed and explained on the basis of molecular modeling studies.  相似文献
