This article presents a research study on carbonate formation in solid and liquid media by Thalassospira sp., Halomonas sp., Bacillus pumilus, and Pseudomonas grimontii, four bacterial strains isolated from sediments and deep seawater. As part of this study, we analyzed carbonic anhydrase activity, pH, adsorption of calcium and magnesium ions, and total organic and inorganic carbon. The geochemical program PHREEQC was also used to calculate the mineral saturation indexes in all the cultures. The minerals formed were studied with X-ray diffraction, X-ray dispersive energy microanalysis, and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, all four bacterial strains were found to induce carbonate precipitation and to have carbonic anhydrase activity. Sterile control experiments did not precipitate carbonate. In solid M1 and B4 media, all of the strains precipitated magnesium calcite, whereas in the liquid media, they precipitated different percentages of magnesium calcite, aragonite, and monohydrocalcite. In both cases, small amounts of amorphous precipitates were also produced. This article discusses carbonate formation and the possible role played by metabolic activity, bacterial surfaces and carbonic anhydrase in this process. Finally, the results obtained lead to a hypothesis regarding the importance of carbonate precipitation for the survival of bacteria populations in certain habitats. 相似文献

When cultured cerebellar granule neurones are transferred from a medium containing high extracellular potassium concentration ([K+]e) (25 mm) to one with lower [K+]e (5 mm), caspase-3 activity is induced and cells die apoptotically. In contrast, if cells in non-depolarizing conditions are treated with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), caspase-3 activity, chromatin condensation and cell death are markedly diminished. In this study, we show that the C-terminal domain of the tetanus toxin heavy-chain (Hc-TeTx) is able to produce the same neuroprotective effect, as assessed by reduction of tetrazolium salts and by chromatin condensation. Hc-TeTx-conferred neuroprotection appears to depend on phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase, as is demonstrated by the selective inhibitors Wortmannin and PD98059, respectively. Hc-TeTx also induces phosphorylation of the tyrosine kinase BDNF receptor, activation of p21Ras in its GTP-bound form, and phosphorylation of the cascade including extracellular-signal-regulated kinases-1/2 (ERK-1/2), p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (p90rsk) and CREB (cAMP-response-element-binding protein). On the other hand, activation of the Akt pathway is also detected, as well as inhibition of the active form of caspase-3. These results point to an implication of both PI3K- and ERK-dependent pathways in the promotion of cerebellar granule cell survival by Hc-TeTx. 相似文献

Ulvan, carrageenan, alginate and laminarin were tested in olive trees’ twigs to elicit phenolic metabolism and control verticillium wilt of olive (VWO) caused by Verticillium dahliae. The elicitation effect was determined through phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, total polyphenol content and lignin content. VWO was assessed in twigs previously elicited (24?h) and maintained in a solution containing bio-elicitors (2?g/L) and conidial suspension (106?conidia/mL). Our results showed stimulation of the phenolic metabolism and the decline of wilt symptoms. Ulvan reduced significantly the area under the disease progress curve for severity to 39.9% and the final incidence to 28.9%. Ulvan and alginate produced significant inhibitory rates on mycelial growth of the fungus in vitro. Seaweed polysaccharides might help to overcome VWO by strengthening the host defense metabolism and restricting the pathogen’s growth. 相似文献

Urogenital tuberculosis is a rare disease; however, it is the second most common location for tuberculosis after the lung. Currently, incidence of urogenital tuberculosis is increasing due to factors such as a higher prevalence of immunosuppression (especially that caused by human immunodeficiency virus infection) and drug abuse.
