Background

A trend towards automation of scientific research has recently resulted in what has been termed “data-driven inquiry” in various disciplines, including physics and biology. The automation of many tasks has been identified as a possible future also for the humanities and the social sciences, particularly in those disciplines concerned with the analysis of text, due to the recent availability of millions of books and news articles in digital format. In the social sciences, the analysis of news media is done largely by hand and in a hypothesis-driven fashion: the scholar needs to formulate a very specific assumption about the patterns that might be in the data, and then set out to verify if they are present or not.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In this study, we report what we think is the first large scale content-analysis of cross-linguistic text in the social sciences, by using various artificial intelligence techniques. We analyse 1.3 M news articles in 22 languages detecting a clear structure in the choice of stories covered by the various outlets. This is significantly affected by objective national, geographic, economic and cultural relations among outlets and countries, e.g., outlets from countries sharing strong economic ties are more likely to cover the same stories. We also show that the deviation from average content is significantly correlated with membership to the eurozone, as well as with the year of accession to the EU.

Conclusions/Significance

While independently making a multitude of small editorial decisions, the leading media of the 27 EU countries, over a period of six months, shaped the contents of the EU mediasphere in a way that reflects its deep geographic, economic and cultural relations. Detecting these subtle signals in a statistically rigorous way would be out of the reach of traditional methods. This analysis demonstrates the power of the available methods for significant automation of media content analysis.  相似文献

A consequence of the Chernobyl disaster was the isolated increase of small air ions for a limited time period over Athens-Greece. Taking advantage of this unique condition we studied the relation of log daily mean concentrations of small positive air ions, small negative air ions, NO2 and SO2 with the total daily number of asthma attacks attendances at the region's largest chest diseases hospital for 35 days following the disaster and during a same time period in the preceding four years. No correlation was found between air ionization and asthma attacks, though the study was of a rather short duration and several possible influencing factors such as aeroallergen concentrations were not taken into consideration.  相似文献

TNF-alpha has been associated with chorioamnionitis and the subsequent development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants. We asked whether bioactive recombinant ovine TNF-alpha could induce chorioamnionitis, lung inflammation, lung maturation, and systemic effects in fetal sheep. We compared the responses to IL-1alpha, a cytokine known to induce these responses in preterm sheep. Intra-amniotic TNF-alpha caused no chorioamnionitis, no lung maturation, and a very small increase in inflammatory cells in the fetal lung after 5 h, 2 days (d), and 7 d. In contrast, IL-1alpha induced inflammation and lung maturation. TNF-alpha given into the airways at birth increased granulocytes in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of ventilated preterm lungs and decreased the mRNA for surfactant protein C but did not adversely effect postnatal lung function. An intravascular injection of IL-1alpha caused a systemic inflammatory response in fetal sheep, whereas there was no fetal response to intravascular TNF-alpha. Fetal and newborn preterm sheep are minimally responsive to TNF-alpha. Therefore, the presence of a mediator such as TNF-alpha in a developing animal does not necessarily mean that it is causing the responses anticipated from previous results in adult animals.  相似文献

Modern ageing theory is based on the observation that oxidative metabolism causes damage that results in a gradual loss of vitality, leading to senescence and death. If animals can oxidize only a given amount of substrate in a lifetime (i.e. the ‘metabolic time’ is allocated from a fixed budget), then behaviour may be aimed at maximizing benefits per unit of ‘metabolic time’ expended. We analyse the consequences of this view for two types of behaviour that are commonly expressed as rates with respect to clock time. Examples are given of locomotory behaviour in which the animals' preferred speeds are generally interpreted as a result of maximization of energetic efficiency. The same behaviour could be expected if animals were ‘speed maximizers’ with respect to metabolic time. Examples are given of foraging behaviour that is also best predicted on the basis of maximization of energetic efficiency. This makes sense only if energy is allocated from a fixed budget. However, foraging animals not only expend energy but also consume it so energy cannot be considered as being allocated from a fixed budget. The same behaviour could be expected if animals were ‘energy intake rate maximizers’ with respect to metabolic time. This makes sense if metabolic time is allocated from a fixed budget as suggested by ageing theory. The metabolic time concept can provide a crucial link between the optimum intensity of short-term behaviour and its long-term fitness consequences. Cellulase-free xylanase production by T. lanuginosus MH4 was investigated in a 3-litre stirred tank bioreactor under different agitation rates and an aeration rate of 1v/v/m. The cultivation time in the bioreactor was reduced significantly over that in shake culture conditions. A xylanase productivity of 0.1 mkat1–1h–1 was achieved on xylan in the bioreactor. This was nearly double to that obtained in shake culture. The agitation rates influenced both growth and enzyme secretion in the bioreactor. The highest level of biomass concentration and activities of both xylanase and -xylosidase were obtained at 150 revmin–1  相似文献

MHC class I molecules expressed on cell surfaces are composed of H chain, beta2-microglobulin and any of a vast array of peptides. The role of peptide in the recognition of HLA class I by serum HLA Abs is unknown. In this study, the solid-phase assay of a series (n = 11) of HLA-A2-reactive, pregnancy-induced, human mAbs on a panel (n = 12) of recombinant monomeric HLA-A2 molecules, each containing a single peptide, revealed peptide selectivity of the mAbs. The flow cytometry membrane staining intensities on the HLA-A2-transduced cell line K562, caused by these mAbs, correlated with the number of monomer species detected by the mAbs. Flow cytometry staining on HLA-A2-bearing cell lines of a variety of lineages was indicative of tissue selectivity of these HLA-A2 mAbs. This tissue selectivity suggests that the deleterious effect on allografts is confined to alloantibodies recognizing only HLA class I loaded with peptides that are derived from tissue-specific and household proteins. Since Abs that are only reactive with HLA loaded with irrelevant peptides are expected to be harmless toward allografts, the practice of HLA Ab determination on lymphocyte-derived HLA deserves reconsideration.  相似文献

Clustering of pathogens in the environment leads to hot spots of diseases at local, regional, national, and international levels. Scotland contains regional hot spots of Johne's disease (caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis) in rabbits, and there is increasing evidence of a link between paratuberculosis infections in rabbits and cattle. The spatial and temporal dynamics of paratuberculosis in rabbits within a hot spot region were studied with the overall aim of determining environmental patterns of infection and thus the risk of interspecies transmission to livestock. The specific aims were to determine if prevalence of paratuberculosis in rabbits varies temporally between seasons and whether the heterogeneous spatial environmental distribution of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis on a large scale (i.e., regional hot spots) is replicated at finer resolutions within a hot spot. The overall prevalence of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis in rabbits was 39.7%; the temporal distribution of infection in rabbits followed a cyclical pattern, with a peak in spring of 55.4% and a low in summer of 19.4%. Spatially, M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis-infected rabbits and, thus, the risk of interspecies transmission were highly clustered in the environment. However, this is mostly due to the clustered distribution of rabbits. The patterns of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis infection in rabbits are discussed in relation to the host's socioecology and risk to livestock.  相似文献
