The buried surface area (BSA), which measures the size of the interface in a protein–protein complex may differ from the accessible surface area (ASA) lost upon association (which we call DSA), if conformation changes take place. To evaluate the DSA, we measure the ASA of the interface atoms in the bound and unbound states of the components of 144 protein–protein complexes taken from the Protein–Protein Interaction Affinity Database of Kastritis et al. (2011). We observe differences exceeding 20%, and a systematic bias in the distribution. On average, the ASA calculated in the bound state of the components is 3.3% greater than in their unbound state, and the BSA, 7% greater than the DSA. The bias is observed even in complexes where the conformation changes are small. An examination of the bound and unbound structures points to a possible origin: local movements optimize contacts with the other component at the cost of internal contacts, and presumably also the binding free energy.  相似文献

Special media suitable for the isolation of fungi growing on jute were developed. Species that would better resist sunlight, such as organisms with dark hyphae and spores or closed fruit bodies, predominated on weather-exposed fabrics. Several strongly cellulolytic organisms not previously implicated in fiber decomposition were isolated from this source. On the other hand, the fungi obtained from jute materials damaged in storage were mostly of the familiar types. Most of the newly isolated fungi are generally missed on ordinary media, but they probably play an important role in the natural decomposition of jute materials.  相似文献

Summary Splenocytes from parous rats have been previously found to have cytotoxic activity against mammary tumor cells in vitro. Experiments were carried out to determine if this pregnancy-induced cytotoxic nature of the splenocytes is inherent and transferable. Splenocytes from parous rats were adoptively transferred to a group of virgin rats. Another group of age-matched, virgin rats received splenocytes from virgin donors in a similar way. After a period of rest, at the age of 55 days, the rats belonging to both of the groups, received 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) intragastrically. A third group of untreated virgin rats were also given the chemical carcinogen the same way as above and were considered as intact controls. The rats were monitored for development and growth of mammary tumor from 60 days of DMBA administration. After 4 months of DMBA administration the rats were sacrificed and mammary glands were examined for tumors. Mammary glands with no visible tumors were taken for whole mount preparation, to be examined for microscopic lesions. The results showed that 33 of 41 intact control rats, developed tumor and 27 of the 34 rats that received spleen cells from virgin rats developed tumors. Of the rats that received spleen cells from parous rats, only 18 out of 37 rats developed tumors, indicating an inhibition of tumor induction in these rats.
