Inexperienced predators are assumed to select for similarity of warning signals in aposematic species (Müllerian mimicry) when learning to avoid them. Recent theoretical work predicts that if co-mimic species have unequal defences, predators attack them according to their average unpalatability and mimicry may not be beneficial for the better defended co-mimic. In this study, we tested in a laboratory environment whether a uniform warning signal is superior to a variable one in promoting predator learning, and simultaneously whether co-mimics are preyed upon according to their average unpalatability. There was an interaction of signal variation and unpalatability but inexperienced birds did not select for signal similarity in artificial prey; when the prey was moderately defended a variable signal was even learnt faster than a uniform one. Due to slow avoidance learning, moderately defended prey had higher mortality than highly defended prey (although this was not straightforward), but mixing high and moderate unpalatability did not increase predation compared with high unpalatability. This does not support the view that predators are sensitive to varying unpalatability. The results suggest that inexperienced predators may neither strongly select for accurate Müllerian mimicry nor affect the benefits of mimicry when the co-mimics are unequally defended.  相似文献

In many natural habitats, growth of cyanobacteria may be limited by a low concentration of iron. Cyanobacteria respond to this condition by expressing a number of iron-stress-inducible genes, of which the isiA gene encodes a chlorophyll-binding protein known as IsiA or CP43'. IsiA monomers assemble into ring-shaped polymers that encircle trimeric or monomeric photosystem I (PSI), or are present in supercomplexes without PSI, in particular upon prolonged iron starvation. In this report, we present steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements of isolated IsiA aggregates that have been purified from an iron-starved psaFJ-minus mutant of Synechocystis PCC 6803. We show that these aggregates have a fluorescence quantum yield of approximately 2% compared to that of chlorophyll a in acetone, and that the dominating fluorescence lifetimes are 66 and 210 ps, more than 1 order of magnitude shorter than that of free chlorophyll a. Comparison of the temperature dependence of the fluorescence yields and spectra of the isolated aggregates and of the cells from which they were obtained suggests that these aggregates occur naturally in the iron-starved cells. We suggest that IsiA aggregates protect cyanobacterial cells against the deleterious effects of light.  相似文献

1. The noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists produce behavioral responses that closely resemble both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. These drugs also induce excitatory and neurotoxic effects in limbic cortical areas.2. We have here mapped the brain areas which show increased activity in response to noncompetitive NMDA-receptor antagonist administration concentrating especially to those brain areas that have been suggested to be relevant in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.3. Rats were treated intraperitoneally with a NMDA-receptor antagonist MK801 and activation of brain areas was detected by monitoring the expression of c-fos mRNA by using in situ hybridization.4. MK801 induced c-fos mRNA expression of in the retrosplenial, entorhinal, and prefrontal cortices. Lower c-fos expression was observed in the layer IV of the parietal and frontal cortex. In the thalamus, c-fos mRNA expression was detected in the midline nuclei and in the reticular nucleus but not in the dorsomedial nucleus. In addition, c-fos mRNA was expressed in the anterior olfactory nucleus, the ventral tegmental area, and in cerebellar granule neurons.5. NMDA-receptor antagonist ketamine increased dopamine release in the parietal cortex, in the region where NMDA-receptor antagonist increased c-fos mRNA expression.6. Thus, the psychotropic NMDA-receptor antagonist induced c-fos mRNA expression in most, but not all, brain areas implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The high spatial resolution of in situ hybridization may help to define regions of interest for human imaging studies.  相似文献

Aposematic herbivores are under selection pressure from their host plants and predators. Although many aposematic herbivores exploit plant toxins in their own secondary defense, dealing with these harmful compounds might underlay costs. We studied whether the allocation of energy to detoxification and/or sequestration of host plant defense chemicals trades off with warning signal expression. We used a generalist aposematic herbivore Parasemia plantaginis (Arctiidae), whose adults and larvae show extensive phenotypic and genetic variation in coloration. We reared larvae from selection lines for small and large larval warning signals on Plantago lanceolata with either low or high concentration of iridoid glycosides (IGs). Larvae disposed of IGs effectively; their body IG content was low irrespective of their diet. Detoxification was costly as individuals reared on the high IG diet produced fewer offspring. The IG concentration of the diet did not affect larval coloration (no trade-off) but the wings of females were lighter orange (vs. dark red) when reared on the high IG diet. Thus, the difference in plant secondary chemicals did not induce variation in the chemical defense efficacy of aposematic individuals but caused variation in reproductive output and warning signals of females.  相似文献

Green plant photosystem I (PSI) consists of at least 18 different protein subunits. The roles of some of these protein subunits are not well known, in particular those that do not occur in the well characterized PSI complexes from cyanobacteria. We investigated the spectroscopic properties and excited-state dynamics of isolated PSI-200 particles from wild-type and mutant Arabidopsis thaliana plants devoid of the PSI-G, PSI-K, PSI-L, or PSI-N subunit. Pigment analysis and a comparison of the 5 K absorption spectra of the various particles suggests that the PSI-L and PSI-H subunits together bind approximately five chlorophyll a molecules with absorption maxima near 688 and 667 nm, that the PSI-G subunit binds approximately two red-shifted beta-carotene molecules, that PSI-200 particles without PSI-K lack a part of the peripheral antenna, and that the PSI-N subunit does not bind pigments. Measurements of fluorescence decay kinetics at room temperature with picosecond time resolution revealed lifetimes of ~0.6, 5, 15, 50, 120, and 5000 ps in all particles. The 5- and 15-ps phases could, at least in part, be attributed to the excitation equilibration between bulk and red chlorophyll forms, though the 15-ps phase also contains a contribution from trapping by charge separation. The 50- and 120-ps phases predominantly reflect trapping by charge separation. We suggest that contributions from the core antenna dominate the 15-ps trapping phase, that those from the peripheral antenna proteins Lhca2 and Lhca3 dominate the 50-ps phase, and that those from Lhca1 and Lhca4 dominate the 120-ps phase. In the PSI-200 particles without PSI-K or PSI-G protein, more excitations are trapped in the 15-ps phase and less in 50- and 120-ps phases, which is in agreement with the notion that these subunits are involved in the interaction between the core and peripheral antenna proteins.  相似文献

Background

Cheap, reliable, point-of-care diagnostics is a necessity for the growing and aging population of the world. Paper substrate and printing method, combined together, are the cheapest possible method for generating high-volume diagnostic sensor platforms. Electrical transduction tools also minimize the cost and enhance the simplicity of the devices.

Methods

Standard surface characterization techniques, namely contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the growth of the organic thiol layers on top of the printed metal electrodes on paper substrates. The results were compared with those obtained by impedimetric electrical characterization method.

Results

This article reports the fabrication and characterization of printed metal electrodes and their functionalization by organic layers on paper and plastic substrates for biosensing and diagnostic applications. Impedimetric measurement is proposed as a simple, yet elegant, method of characterization of the organic layer growth.

Conclusions

Very good correlation was observed between the results of organic layer growth from different measurement methods, justifying the use of paper as a substrate, printing as a method for fabricating metal and organic layers and impedance as a suitable measurement method for hand-held diagnostic devices.

General significance

This result paves the way for the fabrication of more advanced bio-recognition layers for bio-affinity sensors using a printing technology that is compatible with flexible and cheap paper substrates. In this work the spectroscopic properties of the special low-energy absorption bands of the outer antenna complexes of higher plant Photosystem I have been investigated by means of low-temperature absorption, fluorescence, and fluorescence line-narrowing experiments. It was found that the red-most absorption bands of Lhca3, Lhca4, and Lhca1-4 peak, respectively, at 704, 708, and 709 nm and are responsible for 725-, 733-, and 732-nm fluorescence emission bands. These bands are more red shifted compared to "normal" chlorophyll a (Chl a) bands present in light-harvesting complexes. The low-energy forms are characterized by a very large bandwidth (400-450 cm(-1)), which is the result of both large homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening. The observed optical reorganization energy is untypical for Chl a and resembles more that of BChl a antenna systems. The large broadening and the changes in optical reorganization energy are explained by a mixing of an Lhca excitonic state with a charge transfer state. Such a charge transfer state can be stabilized by the polar residues around Chl 1025. It is shown that the optical reorganization energy is changing through the inhomogeneous distribution of the red-most absorption band, with the pigments contributing to the red part of the distribution showing higher values. A second red emission form in Lhca4 was detected at 705 nm and originates from a broad absorption band peaking at 690 nm. This fluorescence emission is present also in the Lhca4-N-47H mutant, which lacks the 733-nm emission band.  相似文献

Field experiments have shown that avian predators in the wildcan select for similarity of warning signals in aposematic prey(Müllerian mimicry) because a common signal is better protectedthan a signal that is novel and rare. The original theory ofMüllerian mimicry assumes that the mechanism promotingmimicry is predator learning; by sharing a signal, the comimicspecies share the mortality that is due to sampling by inexperiencedpredators. Predation events have not been observed in the wild,and learning experiments with naive bird predators in a laboratoryhave not unambiguously shown a benefit of a uniform signal comparedwith different signals. As predators in the field experimentsare likely to be more experienced compared with previous laboratoryexperiments, we studied selection by experienced predators ona novel imperfect mimic. We trained great tits Parus major toavoid artificial aposematic models and subsequently introducedperfect and imperfect mimics at different frequencies. Birdswith prior experience on the models selected against the imperfectmimics that were at a disadvantage also in a memory test conducteda week after their introduction. Selection against the imperfectmimics was antiapostatic. However, the imperfect mimics alsobenefited from some signal generalization to the models andpossibly gained protection because the birds were familiar withthe alternative cryptic prey that was also present. Our resultssuggest that experienced predators might be more important tothe evolution of mimicry than the learning-based theory assumes.  相似文献
