Meiosis was studied in male South American marsh rats (1) to help clarify the mechanisms that allow unusually high levels of Robertsonian (Rb) polymorphisms to be maintained in wild populations of these animals and (2) to test competing assumptions in two distinct models of chromosomal speciation. In both simple Rb heterozygotes and Rb heterozygotes with monobrachial homology, no univalency was observed in prophase I or metaphase I. Rates of nondisjunction were uniformly low (less than 10%) and did not differ significantly among any of the animals studied, regardless of karyotype and in contrast to the frequency of nondisjunction in other mammalian species. Robertsonian heterozygotes exhibited significantly more chiasmata than did homozygotes, largely owing to an increase in the number of terminally located chiasmata. There was a significant bias favoring the transmission of two acrocentrics over the single metacentric for some Rb rearrangements in the heterozygous state. In addition, the frequency of sex-chromosome univalency increased with increasing Rb heterozygosity, although the ratio of X- and Y-bearing secondary spermatocytes did not differ significantly from 1:1, and no secondary spermatocytes were observed that were nullisomic or disomic for an X or Y chromosome.  相似文献

Karyotypes were prepared from 146 individuals, representing nine populations evenly spaced along a 2,000-km north-south transect in Paraguay and Argentina, to determine the nature, extent, and pattern of chromosomal variation in Holochilus brasiliensis chacarius and H. vulpinus. Two distinct patterns of chromosomal variation characterized these two species. In H. brasiliensis, the diploid number (2n) ranged from 48 to 56 and the nombre fondamental (NF) from 57 to 63. Four classes of chromosomal variation were found in populations of H. brasiliensis: whole-arm Robertsonian (Rb) translocations, including Rb changes with monobrachial homology, variation in the number and kind of supernumerary (B) chromosomes, centromeric rearrangements (putative pericentric inversions), and variation in the amount of euchromatin. The amount of structural variation was uniformly high in all populations of H. brasiliensis sampled, and all rearrangements appeared to be in Hardy-Weinberg proportions, corroborating the hypothesis that chromosomal rearrangements are not strongly underdominant in this species. In H. vulpinus, 2n ranged from 35 to 39 and NF from 57 to 61. Two classes of variation were found in this species: variation in the number, but not the kind, of supernumerary chromosomes and variation in the amount of euchromatin.  相似文献

During ship surveys harbor porpoises are only visible when breaking the sea surface to breathe, while during aerial surveys they may be seen down to 2 m below the surface. The fractions of time spent at these two depths can be used for correcting visual surveys to actual population estimates, which are essential information on the status and management of the species. Thirty‐five free‐ranging harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) were tracked in the region between the Baltic and the North Sea for 25–349 d using Argos satellite transmitters. No differences were found in surface behavior between geographical areas or the size of the animals. Slight differences were found between the two sexes and time of day. Surface time peaked in April, where 6% was spent with the transmitter above surface and 61.5% between 0 and 2 m depth, while the minimum values occurred in February (3.4% and 42.5%, respectively). The analyses reveal that individual variation among porpoises is the most important factor in explaining variation in surface rates. However, the large number of animals documented in the present study covering a wide range of age and sex groups justifies the use of the seasonal average surface times for correcting abundance surveys.  相似文献

Parallel changes in genotype and phenotype in response to similar selection pressures in different populations provide compelling evidence of adaptation. House mice (Mus musculus domesticus) have recently colonized North America and are found in a wide range of environments. Here we measure phenotypic and genotypic differentiation among house mice from five populations sampled across 21° of latitude in western North America, and we compare our results to a parallel latitudinal cline in eastern North America. First, we show that mice are genetically differentiated between transects, indicating that they have independently colonized similar environments in eastern and western North America. Next, we find genetically-based differences in body weight and nest building behavior between mice from the ends of the western transect which mirror differences seen in the eastern transect, demonstrating parallel phenotypic change. We then conduct genome-wide scans for selection and a genome-wide association study to identify targets of selection and candidate genes for body weight. We find some genomic signatures that are unique to each transect, indicating population-specific responses to selection. However, there is significant overlap between genes under selection in eastern and western house mouse transects, providing evidence of parallel genetic evolution in response to similar selection pressures across North America.  相似文献

The synthesis and biological activity of a bifunctional, heterodimeric insect neuropeptide analog are described. The heterodimer is composed of the C-terminal pentapeptide active core regions of the leucokinin/achetakinin and pyrokinin neuropeptide families linked via their N-terminal amino groups with a succinyl diacid moiety. Members of the leucokinin/achetakinin family can induce fluid secretion in malpighian tubules of the house cricket, Acheta domesticus, whereas the pyrokinins demonstrate activity in a cricket oviduct myotropic bioassay. No cross-activity is observed for the two neuropeptide families in these bioassays. However, the heterodimer elicits responses in both Acheta bioassays. Such a bifunctional analog may in future serve as a template for the design of stable, bifunctional pest insect control agents of greater efficiency.  相似文献

Recently, a positive correlation between basal leukocyte counts and mating system across primates suggested that sexual promiscuity could be an important determinant of the evolution of the immune system. Motivated by this idea, we examined the patterns of molecular evolution of 15 immune defense genes in primates in relation to promiscuity and other variables expected to affect disease risk. We obtained maximum likelihood estimates of the rate of protein evolution for terminal branches of the primate phylogeny at these genes. Using phylogenetically independent contrasts, we found that immunity genes evolve faster in more promiscuous species, but only for a subset of genes that interact closely with pathogens. We also observed a significantly greater proportion of branches under positive selection in the more promiscuous species. Analyses of independent contrasts also showed a positive effect of group size. However, this effect was not restricted to genes that interact closely with pathogens, and no differences were observed in the proportion of branches under positive selection in species with small and large groups. Together, these results suggest that mating system has influenced the evolution of some immunity genes in primates, possibly due to increased risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases in species with higher levels of promiscuity.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to quantify the rate of dispersal as a response to density in the specialist tephritid fly Paroxyna plantaginis (the main seed predator on its patchily distributed host plant, Tripolium vulgare, Asteraceae). Marked flies were released at three different fly densities in artificial host patches. The individual histories of recaptures were recorded as well as migration between patches and invasion by unmarked flies. The loss of marked flies relative to initial density was analysed using maximum likelihood estimation. Females generally had the highest loss rate. When comparing a density-independent model with a density-dependent model of the loss rate, the density-dependent model won four times out of six for the females but not a single time for the males. A stronger immigration rate of females relative to males supported the suggested female-biased dispersal. This indicates a sit-and-wait strategy for the territorial males and a pre-emptive competition strategy for egg-laying substrates for the females. These results may be of general importance for non-frugivorous tephritid systems with unpredictable and almost ephemeral accessibility to host plants and with a dynamics characterised by a high turnover rate and high attack levels. The study presents a method for measuring the propensity of individuals to leave an area as a response to local density. It is further an example of the consequences individual behavioural responses may have on the population dynamics of a patchy population.  相似文献
