New and effective entrapment of polyelectrolyte-enzyme-complexes in LentiKats

Amyloglucosidase EC 3.2.1.3 was used as model for the immobilisation of enzymes in poly(vinylalcohol) hydrogel (LentiKats) lenses. The entrapment of the enzyme in PVA-hydrogel based on a two-step procedure, firstly its coupling to polyelectrolytes increased the structure level of the enzyme, and subsequently, the resulting complex was entrapped in LentiKats. The immobilised enzyme retained 45% of its original activity and lost no activity over five repeated batch runs.     

Beobachtungen an den Flamingobrutpl?tzen Afghanistans

Zusammenfassung Die afghanischen Flamingobrutplätze am Ab-e-Istada und in der Dasht-e-Nawar wurden während der Jahre 1970–72 regelmäßig besucht. In diesen Zeitraum fiel eine extreme Dürre, in deren Folge beide Seen 1971 völlig austrockneten. In der Dasht-e-Nawar hatte sich der Wasserstand nach zwei Jahren noch nicht soweit normalisiert, daß eine erfolgreiche Flamingobrut stattfinden konnte.Am Ab-e-Istada begannen die Flamingos 1970 und 1972 zwar das Brutgeschäft, wurden aber durch Menschen vergrämt, denen niedriger Wasserstand Zutritt zur Brutinsel ermöglichte. Für diesen See konnteCharadrius leschenaultii als Brutvogel neu nachgewiesen werden.Weiterhin werden Beobachtungen zur Unterwasserfauna und Beobachtungen von Herbstdurchzüglern mitgeteilt.

Observations at breeding-places of Flamingoes in Afghanistan

Summary The Afghan breeding-places of the Greater Flamingo Ab-e-Istada and Dasht-e-Nawar were regularly visited during 1970–1972. An extreme drought evaporated both lakes in 1971. In the Dasht-e-Nawar the water-level had not normalized after two years to allow the flamingoes' breeding.On the Ab-e-Istada flamingoes attempted breeding in 1970 and 1972 but were disturbed by men, who were able to ford to the breeding-island.Charadrius leschenaultii could be shown to breed on this lake.Notes on the waterfauna and observations of migrating birds are given.

Health related virtual communities and electronic support groups: systematic review of the effects of online peer to peer interactions

Objective To compile and evaluate the evidence on the effects on health and social outcomes of computer based peer to peer communities and electronic self support groups, used by people to discuss health related issues remotely.Design and data sources Analysis of studies identified from Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Evidence Based Medicine Reviews, Electronics and Communications Abstracts, Computer and Information Systems Abstracts, ERIC, LISA, ProQuest Digital Dissertations, Web of Science.Selection of studies We searched for before and after studies, interrupted time series, cohort studies, or studies with control groups; evaluating health or social outcomes of virtual peer to peer communities, either as stand alone interventions or in the context of more complex systems with peer to peer components.Main outcome measures Peer to peer interventions and co-interventions studied, general characteristics of studies, outcome measures used, and study results.Results 45 publications describing 38 distinct studies met our inclusion criteria: 20 randomised trials, three meta-analyses of n of 1 trials, three non-randomised controlled trials, one cohort study, and 11 before and after studies. Only six of these evaluated “pure” peer to peer communities, and one had a factorial design with a “peer to peer only” arm, whereas 31 studies evaluated complex interventions, which often included psychoeducational programmes or one to one communication with healthcare professionals, making it impossible to attribute intervention effects to the peer to peer community component. The outcomes measured most often were depression and social support measures; most studies did not show an effect. We found no evidence to support concerns over virtual communities harming people.Conclusions No robust evidence exists of consumer led peer to peer communities, partly because most peer to peer communities have been evaluated only in conjunction with more complex interventions or involvement with health professionals. Given the abundance of unmoderated peer to peer groups on the internet, research is required to evaluate under which conditions and for whom electronic support groups are effective and how effectiveness in delivering social support electronically can be maximised.     

Hormone-Carrier-Neurosecretory Granule Association in the Urophysis of the Goby Gillichthys mirabilis*

(Department of Zoology and Cancer Research Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California, N.S.A.) — Acta zool. (Stockh.) 61(1): 29–38. The caudal neurosecretory system of the mudsucker, Gillichthys mirabilis, was investigated using continuous sucrose density gradient centrifugation, electron microscopy, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and bioassay. A strong light-scattering band near the 41 % sucrose concentration was shown to contain neurosecretory granules by electron microscopy and urotensin II activity by bioassay. Aliquots of this band were run in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the selected regions of the gel containing those bands unique to urophysial tissue were cut out and eluted after the gel had been sliced longitudinally. The eluate from the region of the unique band (rf 0.46) gave the highest urotensin II bioassay activity when compared to adjacent areas. The remaining half of the gel was stained to confirm the localization of the unique bands. Gels made from regions adjacent to the 41 % sucrose concentration showed less stainability of the bands, and eluate of regions from its unique bands contained correspondingly less bioactivity.     

The effect of large doses of vitamin C and magnesium on stress responses in common carp, Cyprinus carpio.

1. Plasma magnesium, cortisol, lactate and ascorbic acid were examined in common carp subjected to various dietary treatments and following handling stress. 2. Under conditions of satisfied dietary magnesium and ascorbate requirements, plasma cortisol concentration after stress increased less pronouncedly than in fish fed large doses of ascorbate and/or magnesium. 3. Plasma lactate increased significantly in all groups after stress, although the increase seemed to be more severe (detrimental) in fish on large doses of ascorbate, either as ascorbic acid (AA) or ascorbic monophosphate Mg salt (AP). 4. Large doses of dietary ascorbate, both AA and AP, resulted in a significant increase of total ascorbate concentration in kidney and hepatopancreas of carp in comparison to pre-experimental level. 5. Kidney total ascorbate concentration decreased by 10-23% in all groups but one in which fish fed diet supplemented with AA displayed a significant increase (30%) of tissue ascorbate. The opposite trend was found in hepatopancreas of AA group with 21.5% ascorbate depletion. 6. The present results suggest that plasma cortisol and kidney (steroidogenesis site) and hepatopancreas ascorbate concentration responses to stress may not be related. Our results also do not support the hypothesis of the primary role of the high concentration of ascorbate in the kidney inhibiting steroidogenesis.
