Belonidae are unusual in that they are carnivorous but lack a stomach and have a straight, short gut. To develop a functional morphological model for this unusual system the gut contents and alimentary tract morphology of Tylosurus gavialoides and Strongylura leiura ferox were investigated. The posterior orientation of the majority of the pharyngeal teeth supports the swallowing of whole large prey, but not their mastication. Mucogenic cells are abundant in the mucosa lining, particularly the esophagus, and their secretions are likely to protect the gut lining from damage while lubricating passage of the prey. Esophagus, anterior intestine, posterior intestine, and rectum all have highly reticulate mucosae. The anterior three gut sections are distensible to accommodate the passage of prey. However, following ingestion large prey are passed to the highly distensible posterior intestine where they rest head first against the ileorectal valve. Alimentary pH ranges from neutral to weakly acidic. Fish prey is digested head first with the head being largely digested while the remainder of the body is still intact. The nondistensibility of the rectum and the small aperture provided by the ileorectal valve suggest the products of intestinal digestion are either small particulates or fluids that pass into rectum where they are absorbed. Aim There has been considerable debate about pre‐settlement stand structures in temperate woodlands in south‐eastern Australia. Traditional histories assumed massive tree losses across the region, whereas a number of recent histories propose that woodlands were originally open and trees regenerated densely after settlement. To reconcile these conflicting models, we gathered quantitative data on pre‐settlement stand structures in EucalyptusCallitris woodlands in central New South Wales Australia, including: (1) tree density, composition, basal area and canopy cover at the time of European settlement; and (2) post‐settlement changes in these attributes. Location Woodlands dominated by Eucalyptus species and Callitris glaucophylla, which originally occupied approximately 100,000 km2 in central New South Wales, Australia. Methods We recorded all evidence of pre‐settlement trees, including stumps, stags and veteran trees, from 39 relatively undisturbed 1‐ha stands within 16 State Forests evenly distributed across the region. Current trees were recorded in a nested 900 m2 quadrat at each site. Allometric relationships were used to estimate girth over bark at breast height, tree basal area, and crown diameter from the girth of cut stumps. A post‐settlement disturbance index was developed to assess correlations between post‐settlement disturbance and attributes of pre‐settlement stands. Results The densities of all large trees (> 60 cm girth over bark at breast height) were significantly greater in current stands than at the time of European settlement (198 vs. 39 trees ha?1). Pre‐settlement and current stands did not differ in basal area. However, the proportional representation of Eucalyptus and Callitris changed completely. At the time of settlement, stands were dominated by Eucalyptus (78% of basal area), whereas current stands are dominated by Callitris (74%). On average, Eucalyptus afforded 83% of crown cover at the time of settlement. Moreover, the estimated density, basal area and crown cover of Eucalyptus at the time of settlement were significantly negatively correlated with post‐settlement disturbance, which suggests that these results underestimate pre‐settlement Eucalyptus representation in the most disturbed stands. Main conclusions These results incorporate elements of traditional and recent vegetation histories. Since European settlement, State Forests have been transformed from Eucalyptus to Callitris dominance as a result of the widespread clearance of pre‐settlement Eucalyptus and dense post‐settlement recruitment of Callitris. Tree densities did increase greatly after European settlement, but most stands were much denser at the time of settlement than recent histories suggest. The original degree of dominance by Eucalyptus was unexpected, and has been consistently underestimated in the past. This study has greatly refined our understanding of post‐settlement changes in woodland stand structures, and will strengthen the foundation for management policies that incorporate historical benchmarks of landscape vegetation changes.  相似文献

The effect of growth temperature on photosynthetic metabolism was studied in the kelp Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. Photosynthesis was subject to phenotypic adaptation, with almost constant photosynthetic rates being achieved at growth temperatures between 0 and 20° C. This response involved: (1) an inverse relationship between growth temperature and photosynthetic capacity, (2) a reduction in the Q10 value for photosynthesis of L. saccharina grown at 0 and 5° C compared with 10, 15 and 20° C grown sporophytes, and (3) an acquired tolerance of photosynthesis to temperatures between 15–25° C (which inhibited photosynthesis in 0 and 5° C grown L. saccharina) in sporophytes grown at 10, 15 and 20° C. The physiological basis of these adaptations is discussed in terms of observed changes in activities and kinetics of the Calvin cycle enzyme ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase (oxygenase) and efficiency of light harvesting-electron transport systems.  相似文献

Hydrophobic surfactants at the air–sea interface can retard evaporative and gaseous exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean. While numerous studies have examined the metabolic role of bacterioneuston at the air–sea interface, the interactions between hydrophobic surfactants and bacterioplankton are not well constrained. A novel experimental design was developed, using Vibrio natriegens and 3H-labelled hexadecanoic acid tracer, to determine how the bacterial metabolism of fatty acids affects evaporative fluxes. In abiotic systems, >92% of the added hexadecanoic acid remained at the air–water interface. In contrast, the presence of V. natriegens cells draws down insoluble hexadecanoic acid from the air–water interface as an exponential function of time. The exponents characterizing the removal of hexadecanoic acid from the interface co-vary with the concentration of V. natriegens cells in the underlying water, with the largest exponent corresponding to the highest cell abundance. Radiochemical budgets show that evaporative fluxes from the system are linearly proportional to the quantity of hexadecanoic acid at the interface. Thus, bacterioplankton could influence the rate of evaporation and gas transfer in the ocean through the metabolism of otherwise insoluble surfactants.  相似文献

Behavioural studies often need to employ marking techniques to identify and track individuals. Marks ideally have no influence on behaviour or fitness of marked individuals or on the organisms with which they interact. A newly developed internal marking technique uses deuterium to manipulate the chemical emissions of bethylid wasps that are parasitoids of lepidopteran larvae. Wasps are deuterated indirectly by injecting deuterium oxide (heavy water) into the host on which they feed as larvae. Adult wasps emit a volatile chemical under stressful conditions and the emissions of deuterated and undeuterated wasps can be clearly and readily distinguished by measuring the ratio of deuterated/undeuterated molecules using real‐time mass spectrometry. Deuterated female wasps are, however, detectably disadvantaged in dyadic contests for host resources, a component of female fitness. In this study, we evaluated potential side‐effects of this deuterium marking technique on three further correlates of female Goniozus legneri Gordh (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) fitness: longevity, lifetime fecundity, and offspring developmental mortality. We found that deuterium enrichment has no overall adverse effects on these parameters. We further showed that injecting hosts with different concentrations of deuterium results in distinguishably different volatile emissions of adult wasps, such that at least three individuals can be simultaneously identified by their chemical signatures. We also showed that deuterium marking remains effective beyond a wasp's death: deuterated and undeuterated wasps remain readily distinguishable after storage. We discuss potential applications of deuterium marking for the laboratory and field study of chemical communication, dispersal, and mating structure in parasitoid wasps and other insects.  相似文献

Poly(benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene–alt–thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione) (PBDTTPD) polymer donors with linear side‐chains yield bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) solar cell power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of about 4% with phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the acceptor, while a PBDTTPD polymer with a combination of branched and linear substituents yields a doubling of the PCE to 8%. Using transient optical spectroscopy it is shown that while the exciton dissociation and ultrafast charge generation steps are not strongly affected by the side chain modifications, the polymer with branched side chains exhibits a decreased rate of nongeminate recombination and a lower fraction of sub‐nanosecond geminate recombination. In turn the yield of long‐lived charge carriers increases, resulting in a 33% increase in short circuit current (J sc). In parallel, the two polymers show distinct grazing incidence X‐ray scattering spectra indicative of the presence of stacks with different orientation patterns in optimized thin‐film BHJ devices. Independent of the packing pattern the spectroscopic data also reveals the existence of polymer aggregates in the pristine polymer films as well as in both blends which trap excitons and hinder their dissociation.  相似文献

The term “proteome” was first introduced into the scientific literature in July 1995. Almost 20 years ago attempts to characterize the “total protein complement able to be encoded by a given genome” only became possible due to privileged access to what were then the world's most complete sets of genomic data. Today, proteomics has become an important pillar in the fields of disease diagnosis and drug research and development, while also playing a critical role in the much larger field of Healthcare Analytics and Biomarker Discovery and Detection. It is important to note that this industry originated mostly from building blocks in analytical science that predated the term “proteomics” by many decades. However, proteomics, as a discipline, has allowed protein scientists to more favorably compete in the face of highly fashionable Big Science and, more specifically, genomics.  相似文献
